However The Kings are facing financial problems due to low ticket sales and lack of interest in their team (because they aren't winning anymore). I think the Maloofs are going to sell his Sacramento team and start a rebuilding process in Anaheim

They're not selling, they're (trying) relocating. Big difference. The lack of ticket sales is because of several factors: the whole California is in total chaos (recession), also Vegas too (The Palms' is also in financial meltdown) that's why the Maloofs aren't investing much on the Kings (hence the losing), but they have given up some of their properties JUST to keep the Kings. They have sold their distributorship business to keep the Kings, no way will they - in their own words - repeat the same Houston Rockets mistake.

The relocating option is a knee-jerkish one. I've posted on the Kings thread an article stating 29 reasons why it is such - all of which are spot on. The only problem in the Sacramento area is an Arena. Like the bros have said, they'll sign a lease for 30 years if a new arena is present. Check out the current Arco, it's butt ugly and ancient. A new Arena = No movers. Another key note is the brothers owe the city of Sacramento (IIRC) 70-90 Million dollars, so they can't just sell or bolt off.

Both parties (the city and the club) are at fault if the current situation turns ugly (relocation). Both have faults, but the fans will have to suffer (more so the stubborn city - they'll feel the hit when the team leaves, f'ing idiots).

If the Filipino ownership pushes through, perhaps the franchise can bring in the first and only Filipino-American to play in the NBA - Raymond Townsend who suited up for the Warriors and the Indiana Pacers - to join the front office even in an honorary capacity. Then, the team can hire Fil-Am coach Erik Spoelstra from Miami and enlist the first pure-blooded Filipino ever to play in the NBA - maybe, Jimmy Alapag or James Yap or L. A. Tenorio.

Challenges of buying an NBA franchise

There it was, splashed across the sports pages. Sports patron and PLDT boss Manny Pangilinan has been offered an NBA franchise. The Sacramento Kings, once the Rochester Royals then Kansas City – Omaha Kings from 1971 to 1985, are on the selling block. A proud franchise that was home for Tiny Archibald when he became the first player to lead the NBA in scoring and assists in the same season, the Kings were allowed to move to Sacramento through a unanimous vote of the NBA Board of Governors.

The Sacramento Kings have had one of the most loyal fan bases in all of professional sports in the US, selling out their first 497 games (the fourth-longest streak in the NBA), then selling out another 354 straight when the team was a powerhouse in the late 1990’s. That edition of the squad, including Chris Webber, Jason Williams, Peja Stojakovic and Vlade Divac, even made the cover of Sports Illustrated in 2001. They were also the opponents of Yao Ming’s “home” team Houston Rockets in the first-ever NBA China Games in Shanghai and Beijing in 2004. But now, they are a shadow of the great team they once were.

Naturally, the notion of having a Filipino own an NBA franchise sent a jolt of electricity down the spines of many people in this basketball-mad country. Even though the Kings are far removed from their years as a Western Conference contender, they are an NBA franchise in the state where the largest number of Filipinos resides. What was once a distant pipe dream was suddenly on the verge of reality. But how close is the deal to really happening?

First of all, let’s look at the numbers. Depending on varying reports, franchise itself is worth from $250 to 350 million (P12 to 18 billion), the bigger figure more or less equivalent to the capital and operating cost in TV5 for three years. That’s a hefty chunk of cash to sink into a team that has no clear success in the immediate future. That amount is merely for the change in ownership. There are many other costs that will make a first-time owner of a team think twice, not to mention salaries and performance incentives.

Many fans are not happy with Power Balance Pavilion, complaining loudly that many other teams have newer venues. Of course, sharing the cost of building a spanking-new arena has been a sore spot between team owners and cities not just in the NBA, but in the National Football League and Major League Baseball, as well. A new arena would be built away from expensive property in city centers, and also away from the ordinary fans who will then have to drive miles just to show their loyalty to their team. Then there will be the issue of other revenue streams from the arena itself – merchandise, other events, food and beverages, and so on. Over-pricing of tickets and other ancillary revenue sources have turned off many fans all around the league.

Also, looking at the culture around the league, are they ready and willing to have an Asian team owner? Some team owners have voiced resistance to non-American and even African-American owners in the past. The residual racial bias is a reality of American business. Will they allow the sale of ownership in this kind of scenario, or has the economic crisis changed that? After all, it is increasingly difficult to find businessmen in the United States who are willing to invest that much in an NBA team that is not in a major American media center.

So where would the Kings be allowed to move to? Anaheim may not be an option if the Lakers decide it would cut into their market and therefore diminish their value. California is the only state with four NBA franchises (the Lakers, Clippers, Warriors and Kings), but that is because of its sheer economic size. Would the team be moved to a location where there would be a lot of “suki” Filipinos to patronize it? San Francisco already has an NBA team, and many Filipinos live in places like Carson and Daly City, which would not be able to sustain a team. Any move would be a gamble.

Perhaps Pangilinan’s biggest apprehension is that he does not live in the US and will primarily be an absentee owner. After 22 years building business overseas, Pangilinan obviously does not want or need to relocate simply to oversee one of his many enterprises, no matter how big it may be. MVP is very hands-on, as shown by his attendance at matches of all the teams he supports, whether in the PBA, UAAP or NCAA. Unlike the New Jersey Nets’ Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov – who can’t even remember where his yacht is parked - Pangilinan is keenly aware of how all his investments are doing, and where everything is headed, and how long things take to gestate. Who would he trust to run the team in his absence?

Also, there is the possibility of Pangilinan’s business interests branching out into the US, though that is another challenge in itself. With the mobile phone market’s growth in the Philippines limited to its 90 million citizens, this may be a reason to jump across the big pond in some way or another. It may also benefit some of his other business interests in media and food.

Of course, some are naively postulating that if the purchase does take place, that the Kings will become an all-Filipino act. That won’t happen. The NBA is based in the US, and you simply can’t alienate the rest of the market just to seem nationalistic. First off, no Filipino managers have any experience running an NBA franchise. Secondly, no full-blooded, homegrown Filipino has any experience coaching an NBA franchise. Pangilinan himself has been a pioneer in bringing American coaches to the PBA, courting controversy along the way. Though there would definitely be some Filipino representation, he would ultimately hire the best people for the job, regardless of their nationality, since the NBA is a global enterprise. And he will have support.

Yao Ming, for his part, was an exception to many rules because of the size of the Chinese market, and of course, his uneroded skills as a player years ago. Some estimates proclaim that his appearance in a Rockets uniform added 20 million viewers in mainland China for each regular season game alone. We simply don’t have those numbers, although it would be a great feeling to see Pinoys working in team management in the NBA, if not as players. And Filipino communities in the US are historically fractured, often banding together by province, not their nationality. This writer once witnessed a Filipino parade where a group even subdivided further into the “Eastern Pangasinenses” of Chicago. More Filipinos watching live games would be a bonus, nothing more. It cannot be orchestrated or organized on a large scale.

Having said all that though, having a Filipino presence in the NBA would be akin to bringing the Olympic Games to the Philippines. It would be a dream many of us did not even dare to dream. It would give hope and pride to a nation constantly disappointed with its leaders, a country whose pride has come from its individuals striking out on their own in foreign lands and proving their greatness. It may even prove the tipping point for the NBA to recognize the passion – if not the spending power – of the Philippines, and put up an office in the country, something that has been in discussion for a decade. Perhaps overcoming all these obstacles will be the impetus for us to be united over something, long-term. Can you imagine the global ripples in the demeanor of and towards Filipinos if this were to happen? That might be worth the risk. But it is not one to be taken hastily or lightly.

The NBA is one mountain that will not come to Mohammad. And a long-distance love affair – even one as strong as MVP’s love for basketball – is always a painful test.
