    Silent Hill 2: Revelations 3D

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that a sequel to the 2006 video game adaptation, Silent Hill is in the works. Writer Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida will be returning for Silent Hill 2, though no director has been named yet. Hadida’s Davis Films will start production on Silent Hill 2 once production is completed on Resident Evil 4, which is gearing up to start shooting as we speak.

Silent Hill is of course the story of a reclusive town where ash rains from the sky all day, and at the sound of an alarm Hell takes over the town and grotesque demons start appearing everywhere. The video game series (which was first released in 1999) has been so creepy/scary that I’ve had to turn on the lights for safety while playing it. The movie had some standout moments (a scene in a basement bathroom really did freak me out), but ultimately fell short as yet another half-realized video game adaptation, earning $47million domestically, despite a general panning by critics.

Silent Hill 2 Details Starting To Emerge

Until they announced Silent Hill 2 recently, I had no idea how many Screen Rant readers were actually fans of Christophe Gans’ 2006 movie adaptation. …

Until they announced Silent Hill 2 recently, I had no idea how many Screen Rant readers were actually fans of Christophe Gans’ 2006 movie adaptation. But now that I know, I’m keeping you guys in the loop about the sequel is developing.

Earlier (this week) I reported that Silent Hill 2 could possibly start filming next year. In that report came word that returning writer Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction) has some ‘crazy, cool stuff’ already worked into the script. That all sounded good, but questions like would Gans be returning, would star Radha Mitchell be returning, would the movie be a direct sequel, etc., still needed answering.

Well, thanks to producer Don Carmody and Shock Til Ya Drop, some of those questions are indeed starting to get answered.

For those who don’t know, Roger Avary was recently sentenced to a year in jail following a vehicular manslaughter charge from a 2008 car accident. So how is Avary’s incarceration effecting the progress of Silent Hill 2? Said Carmody (exclusively to Shock Til Ya Drop):
“Well, we have had a bit of a hiccup with Roger…We’re just debating whether we can wait for him. He’s writing the script for sure.”
As for the questions of whether or not Mitchell will return to star and Gans to direct, Carmody had a “no” and a “maybe” to give: Mitchell has expressed interest in returning (that’s the maybe), but as far as Gans:
“I don’t think he wants to come back. He’ll have some input for sure. In his mind, I think he wanted to do the first one and for this he’s very happy to consult, but I think he wants to direct something new,”
Now, I don’t want to alarm you Silent Hill fans on a Friday, but you really need to pay attention to this next part:
“I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public…Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there…You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more…Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character – without giving too much away – is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group.”

While the Silent Hill video games may not be as popular as the Resident Evil series (you’ll need to check with our guys over at Game Rant to be sure), they have certainly left a much stronger impression on gamers via the skid-marked underwear of those who dared to play the games at night. Gans’ adaptation, while a bit weird and (artsy?), captured the terrifying sensation of the games almost perfectly. Watering that terror down into a schlocky, by-the-numbers horror flick – where all the terrible happenings HAVE to be explained at length – doesn’t sound as interesting.

But wait, what’s this about ‘an older main character?’ In the first film, Mitchell’s character, Rose, comes to Silent Hill to find her lost daughter, Sharon, who is a spiritual conduit for a hell-demon. Could an older version of Sharon be the main character of Silent Hill 2? And would that make the age group Carmody is targeting teenagers / young adults? Is that the Silent Hill 2 we’re getting, Twilight with demons? I hope not…

‘Silent Hill 2′ Gets New Director, Title and 3D Format

Michael Bassett, the writer/director behind ‘Solomon Kane’, is taking charge of the ‘Silent Hill’ sequel – now titled ‘Silent Hill 3D: Revelation’.

The 2006 film adaptation of Konami’s survival horror video game franchise Silent Hill was dismissed by most critics, but scared up enough of an audience to warrant interest in a sequel. After being stuck in limbo for several years, the project is finally moving forward with a new director, a new format, and a new title – Silent Hill 3D: Revelation.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Michael Bassett will write and direct the Silent Hill sequel, which will be produced by Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody. Bassett’s previous film was the action-fantasy Solomon Kane, which sadly still hasn’t been released here in the states. I’ve heard predominantly good things about it, though – particularly in regards to its imaginative visuals and moody atmosphere.

While the original Silent Hill borrowed elements from the span of the video game trilogy, the crux of the story was derived from the first game. However, the film also attempted to break some new ground and offer just a bit more closure than the often ambiguous source material.

That said, it seems a bit curious that Silent Hill 3D: Revelation seems to be based heavily on the third game in the series – an entry very closely connected to the first. Given the way the first film ends (and the gender switch of the main character), that connection is pretty impossible. Here’s the plot description from BD:
The sequel follows Heather Mason, along with her father, who have been on the run – always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.
I’m not saying that there needs to be a strong link to the first Silent Hill. The idea of different people all finding their way to this town for their own reasons is actually a lot creepier. Personally, I’m just not that fond of the third game. If they want to make a standalone film that tries to appease fans who were burned by the first movie and also appeals to a larger audience, I think the second game has a much stronger hook and narrative.

I’m probably in the minority here, but even the fourth game seems like it has a better premise for a film adaptation. The inciting incidents in both games are just so much more interesting – at least to me.

I have mixed feelings about the film being shot in 3D, but at least it won’t be another example of sloppy post-conversion. I know 3D probably seems like a natural fit for horror films and the box office success of films like Resident Evil: Afterlife and Saw 3D certainly reaffirm that – but Silent Hill is not in the same vein as those series.

Evidently, one of the aims of the sequel is to make it more accessible, which is somewhat discouraging. The fact that the games are more cerebral and less action-oriented is a large part of their success. The first Silent Hill movie didn’t fail because of its reverence for the source material – at least not for me.

There’s actually a lot I like about Christophe Gans’ film, but what ultimately made it such a misfire in my book was the dreadful pacing. It just plodded along for 90 minutes with cool looking creatures popping out here and there, and then tried to cram in all of its exposition in the last 20 or 30 minutes. I hope the filmmakers realize that they don’t need a dumbed-down Silent Hill sequel – just an entry that dispenses its plot more efficiently.

‘Silent Hill 3D: Revelation’ Director Talks About Improving the Sequel

Director Michael J. Bassett confirms his involvement with ‘Silent Hill 3D: Revelation’ and explains how the sequel will be both similar to, and different from, its predecessor.

Last week it was confirmed that the long-gestating Silent Hill sequel – now titled Silent Hill 3D: Revelation – was finally moving forward and that Solomon Kane director Michael J. Bassett would be taking the reins.

It was also revealed that the film’s main character would be Heather Mason, the protagonist of the Silent Hill 3 video game. While a direct adaptation of that particular entry into Konami’s successful survival horror franchise is unlikely, the premise of Silent Hill 3D: Revelation is fairly similar: after being plagued with nightmares, a young woman is drawn to the eponymous town to uncover the truth about her father.

Although Bassett’s involvement was only recently announced, it sounds like he’s been involved with the project for quite some time. He recently took to his blog and indicated that the script for Silent Hill 3D: Revelation has already been finished:
“Finally, it’s been announced and I can say officially what I’ve been eager to share with you all for a little while now; I’ve written and am going to be directing the new Silent Hill movie.”
While fans of the games remain divided in their opinions of the previous film, the one element that seems to be universally praised is the unique look of that movie. Director Christophe Gans perfectly captured the atmosphere and tone of the Silent Hill universe and Bassett promises that he doesn’t intend to stray too far from what’s already been established:
“I love the games and was a huge admirer of the first film. Especially how Christophe Gans and his team managed to capture the look and feel of the world. I say, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, so I’m bringing back as many of that core creative team as I can – but I’m probably going to bring just a little more darkness and fear into the mix as well. I love the complex mythology and psychological twists that Konami created so will do my best honour that aspect too.”

Previous comments from producer Don Carmody had me worried that Silent Hill 3D: Revelation would be more of a reinvention than a true sequel, so Bassett’s desire to bring back the same team is actually pretty encouraging. I like Gans’ film quite a bit, but Roger Avary’s script prevents me from being able to say that I loved it. Luckily, it sounds like Bassett was taking notes about what worked in that film, and what didn’t:
“I’m determined to deliver a film that builds on the qualities of the first film and draws on the best aspects of the games whilst giving the audience more nuanced characters, a compelling story and introducing some terrifying new monsters (as well as bringing back a few favourites) and, most important of all… just scaring the s**t out of everyone.”
I’m still just a bit nervous about another Silent Hill movie, but at the very least Bassett’s heart seems to be in the right place. I’m not crazy about basing this new film on Silent Hill 3, but I do appreciate the desire to develop better defined characters and a more intriguing story. I did like Avary’s explanation of why the town was abandoned, but I found his other changes to be far less effective than the source material. Here’s hoping Bassett has a better take on it.

‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’ Casts Its Leads [Updated]

Adelaide Clemens (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) are the leads in the upcoming sequel ‘Silent Hill: Revelations 3D’, based on the popular video game franchise.

Davis Films put out a press release that names two rising young stars as the leads in the upcoming Silent Hill sequel, aptly titled Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, which is being directed by Michael Bassett (Solomon Kane).

Adelaide Clemens (Wolverine) and Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) will be headlining Silent Hill 2, with Clemens playing the protagonist of the film. No specific word on who Harington is playing, though he too is being described as a ‘headliner’ of the film.

For those unfamiliar, Silent Hill was a 2006 movie based off the popular survival horror video game franchise. The film version was a slightly altered version of the first game’s premise, in which a mother and her daughter come to the mysterious town of Silent Hill trying to explain the daughter’s horrific nightmares about the strange town. When the daughter gets lost, the mother goes searching for her, uncovering a dark secret that involves witches, cults, demons and darkness spouted from the very mouth of Hell itself.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D will not be a direct sequel to the first, but will instead spin a new tale set within the wicked setting of the titular town. Check out the film’s official synopsis:
For years, Heather Mason (Clemens, pictured above) and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.
Given the premise of the new film and the events of the first film, it’s clear there will be some narrative threads that weave these two installments together. The first film’s strongest suit was definitely its nightmarish vision of what Hell on Earth looks like, and the terrifying monsters it brought to life onscreen.

While the lead actors are far from what you would call “household names” – though Harington’s role in HBO’s Game of Thrones and Clemens’ role in Mad Max: Fury Road could soon change that – their presence in the film will undoubtedly take a backseat to the real selling point of the movie: the 3D visuals.

Original Cast Members Will Return for ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’

Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, and Deborah Kara Unger will reprise their roles from ‘Silent Hill’ in Michael J. Bassett’s upcoming sequel – ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’.

Last week, up-and-comers Adelaide Clemens (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kit Harrington (Game of Thrones) were announced as the leads in Silent Hill: Revelation 3D – the long-gestating follow-up to Christophe Gans’ 2006 adaptation of Konami’s popular video game series.

Although the original Silent Hill received mixed reception from critics, many fans praised how meticulously Gans had translated the atmosphere of the games onto the big screen. There was talk that he might reunite with screenwriter Roger Avary for a sequel, but those plans never materialized and the project languished in development hell for several years.

Back in November, Silent Hill 2 was given a new lease on life when Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) was brought on board to write and direct the film. It was also confirmed that the plot would borrow heavily from the third game in the series – an entry whose narrative was deeply intertwined with the events of the first game.
Despite several notable changes, the original Silent Hill stuck fairly close to the premise of that first game – which led many to wonder just how strong a connection Silent Hill: Revelation 3D would share with its predecessor. It looks like we have our answer…

Davis Films has just announced that Silent Hill cast members Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, and Deborah Kara Unger will reunite for the sequel – and it sounds like Bassett couldn’t be happier to include them:
“It wouldn’t be the same without some of the original Silent Hill cast. Sean, Radha and Deborah’s return will certainly thrill fans of the franchise and compliment Revelations stars Adelaide and Kit.”
Cinematographer Maxime Alexandre (The Crazies) adds that the technology being utilized for the film might make for a more harrowing experience than anything presented in the first film:
“With the most advanced technology available, in particular the lighter, smaller and more flexible 3D Red Epic, we are able to take audiences deeper in the world of Silent Hill than they ever dreamed possible. Devotees will finally be able to enter this realm along side of Heather, Vincent, Harry and Rose and experience the psychological horror and the fear of the unknown with them.”

Speaking of devotees – did you notice that Bean’s character is referred to as Harry and not Christopher? To me, details like that indicate that Bassett has done his homework and that he’s carefully juggling the continuity established in the first film with the mythology of the games.

The above photo of Heather coming face to face with Rose also implies that the returning Silent Hill cast members won’t simply appear in exposition-laden flashbacks (although Unger’s presence makes it a pretty safe bet that there will probably be a few). I’m a fan of all three actors and can’t wait to see how they factor into Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

Despite my familiarity with the video game series, I’m optimistic that Bassett will still be able to throw fans a few curve balls. To be honest, the third game was one of my least favorite entries in the series and I still think that a stand-alone follow-up might have been a better direction to go in – but I’ll try and reserve judgment until we get a better look at how Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is shaping up.

Carrie-Anne Moss & Malcolm McDowell Join ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D’

Carrie-Anne Moss and Malcolm McDowell join the cast of ‘Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.’ Find out which characters from the video game series they’ll be portraying.

Christophe Gans’ 2006 adaptation of the popular video game series Silent Hill may not have been a perfect film, but it did an incredibly admirable job of translating the spirit of its source material to the big screen. It also earned enough money to warrant interest in a follow-up and now writer/director Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) will take audiences back to the titular town in his upcoming sequel – Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

When production began just under a month ago, it was revealed that Adelaide Clemens (Mad Max: Fury Road) had landed the lead role of Heather Mason and that Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) would co-star as Vincent. The following week, we learned that Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean, and Deborah Kara Unger were also on board and would be reprising their roles from the first Silent Hill.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D borrows the crux of its story from the video game Silent Hill 3, so the characters mentioned in the latest casting announcement should come as no surprise. Davis Films has confirmed that Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) will play the film’s antagonist, Claudia Black, and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) will play her abusive father, Leonard.

In the game, Claudia is an incredibly memorable adversary who knows the truth about Heather’s past and is responsible for drawing her back to the town of Silent Hill. I know Moss might not seem like an obvious choice to fans of the games, but I think this is actually a pretty inspired decision – particularly because Claudia isn’t as outright malevolent as Christabella (the first film’s villain). There’s a tragic aspect to her that I think Moss will be able to capture perfectly.

Producer Samuel Hadida says of Moss:
“Carrie has displayed her enormous talent across all genres – from The Matrix Trilogy to Memento – and we are delighted for her to join the world of Silent Hill. She will certainly bring a new level of excitement to fans of the videogame franchise.”

Claudia’s past is somewhat ambiguous, but it’s indicated that she suffered a great deal of abuse at the hands of her father, Leonard (McDowell). Her troubled past is deeply tied to her nefarious plans for Heather (Clemens). Leonard Black also appears in the game Silent Hill 3, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t played it – let’s just say that he looks nothing like Malcolm McDowell.

McDowell’s involvement indicates that the role of Leonard may have been slightly expanded and that there could be more to Claudia’s back story than what Heather hears from Vincent (Harington). Bassett is excited to have the legendary actor on board and believes that he’ll go above and beyond what’s required of him:
“Malcolm is quite simply an icon of modern cinema and I’ve been a fan since I was a teenager when I managed to see A Clockwork Orange. He has an amazing ability to bring new and unexpected dimensions to his characters and I know he will bring something unique and disturbing to Silent Hill.”
I’ve mentioned before that I think Bassett probably has more than a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to Silent Hill: Revelation 3D. Despite using the third game as a template, it sounds like there will be enough deviations to keep even the savviest of fans on their toes.

The first Silent Hill made some significant changes to the game’s mythology and it sounds like the sequel is attempting to honor both interpretations while simultaneously branching off into some new territory. Solomon Kane is still unavailable here in the U.S. so I’m not really all that familiar with Bassett’s work. However, I do get the impression that he has a genuine love for the source material and that this is a passion project for him.

I’m still a fan of the first Silent Hill movie and I love what Gans managed to accomplish, but I think Roger Avary’s script did him no favors. The third act of that film is a mess – particularly when it grinds to a halt right before the climax so that Alessa can deliver all of the exposition that could have been slowly revealed piece by piece in the preceding hour and a half.

It was still an unbelievably unique horror film, though and I’d love to see this franchise continue beyond this latest installment. If Silent Hill: Revelation 3D manages to move along at a better pace with a more focused narrative, I think the potential for further stories set in this universe would be undeniable.
