    POSTED BY DAVID GONZÁLEZ ⋅ JULIO 26, 2012 ⋅

    ROUGH GOOGLE TRANSLATION:

"One of the films that do not know anything or very little so far is the new principal work of the always estimable Filipino Brillante Mendoza. The director had already presented this year Captive, his drama about the kidnapping on the island of Palawan in a French volunteer humanitarian mission, played by Isabelle Huppert, and who competed for the Golden Bear in Berlin. However, Mendoza decided not to take a break and embarked on recording a new tape, Thy Womb (your womb). The film delves into the life of a woman belonging to an indigenous people, the Badjao, struggling against his hard every day and personal dilemma generated by their infertility, and the gradual impoverishment of the Traveller community, which, like the people to whom it belongs, is shifting its settlements in small wooden sailboats. The woman is played by Nora Aunor, a veteran and highly respected actress, singer and producer from the Philippines. Will Mendoza, or even Aunor, have a chance of clinching a prize?"

FRESH from their team-up in the TV5 series, “Sa Ngalan ng Ina,” Nora Aunor and Bembol Roco are again paired in the indie film, “Thy Womb,” directed by Brillante Dante Mendoza.

“Thy Womb” was meant as an entry to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) but it didn’t win the nod of the MMFF Selection Committee. However, it made it as an entry to the Venice Film Festival.

Mendoza is, so far, the only Filipino director to win a best director trophy from the Cannes filmfest.

Nora and Bembol first worked together in “‘Merika” in 1984. The film, directed by Gil Portes, amassed several awards, including for best actor and actress for Bembol and Nora and best director for Gil.

“‘Merika” was filmed in its entirety in the US.

“Thy Womb,” which also stars Lovi Poe, was filmed in three municipalities in Tawi Tawi: Bongao, Sitangkai and Turtle Island.

Impressed with the self-reliance of the natives of Tawi-Tawi and their effort to really please all of them during their entire stay in the island, Nora promised to go back there to help start a livelihood program for them.

    Bravo, Nora.

Speaking of Nora, her granddaughter Janine Gutierrez, a new contract star of GMA 7, hopes she would be able to accomplish even half of what her Lola has attained. “Sobra naman if I aspire to equal half of her feat,” said the eldest daughter of estranged couple Lotlot de Leon (Nora’s adopted daughter) and Ramon Christopher Gutierrez.

“From what I heard and have been reading about her, she remains to date the one and only superstar.

“Actually my Lola Pilita (Corrales, mom of Ramon Christopher) herself ay mahirap pantayan. Bilang singer at artista rin.

“Pero ang sarap ma-identify with them,” she beamed.

Janine confessed that she had no plans to enter showbiz. In fact, she was in her third year as an interdisciplinary student at the Ateneo de Manila University when the idea hit her.

Just the same, she chose to finish her studies before deciding to follow the klieg lights.

Now she is a mainstay of two shows on GMA 7, the primetime soap “Makapiling Kang Muli” and the Sunday noontime musical show, “Party Pilipinas.”

By the way, Janina was asked by her uncle, Raymond Gutierrez, the half-brother of Ramon Christopher if she has a boyfriend.

“Hay usapan namin ng Mommy (Lotlot) na bago ako magka-boyfriend, siya muna,” was her answer.

    Nora, hindi pa rin naoperahan

    http://www.abante-tonite.com/issue/a...showbiz_al.htm

DUMATING na kahapon ang one and only superstar (meron pa bang iba?) na si Nora Aunor.

And guess what -- nasa airport pa siya ay nag-text na kaagad sa akin:

Kaya after all these years, she has narrowed down the few who have remained faithful to her, sa meron man o wala, may pelikula man siya o wala, sikat man siya o laos na -- basta nandiyan siya, hindi showbiz kundi isang totoong tunay na tao!

    ***

    “WALANG HIMALA!”
So, who’s now currently healing from this sad fate of her compe*titor?

    Brillante's Nora

MANILA, Philippines — Brillante Mendoza’s films, at least the two I have seen, are disquieting because it reminds you about what is happening around you that, perhaps, you no longer perceive or no longer want to see. Brilliante forces you to look at things that infuriate and outrage, but make you feel helpless and impotent because they are there enveloping and surrounding you and yet you cannot do anything to change the situation. You could do your bit and convince yourself that you have to make a difference even if you will not live to see the ripple you stirred form a magnificent wave.

Be that as it may, Brillante’s movies are also refreshing because comic relief is never slapstick, humor is not the vulgar bathroom type; it is sardonic, often wry and unexpected. Shouting and screaming for no apparent reason, main fare in most Filipino films, are mercifully, absent. There was a lot of shouting in “Captive” but the storyline definitely called for it.

Most welcome, at least to this writer, is the absence of vapid “vedettes” and shallow “ juniors,” to use two Mexican deprecations, contriving romantic encounters solely for the pursuit of commercial gains. What a delicious relief to sit through two hours of seasoned, nuanced, modulated yet impassioned superlative acting. “Lola” starring Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio gripped one’s heart and innards; unparalleled are those two thespians!

I have yet to see “Thy Womb” with Nora Aunor but I caught a glimpse of it from the trailer shown at the “Captive” gala night. There was a close-up of her and those incredible eyes that reveal all the character’s most intimate anguish. Nora Aunor does not have to utter a word, she would have been sensational in those silent films. Certainly, none was surprised that she received an award for her acting in the latest Venice Film Festival. (Brilliante’s film received the Novicella). Many years ago, I saw “Himala” so I am looking forward to “Thy Womb” to be awed by a chastised, chastened, and mature Nora Aunor. By the way, she looked smashing in that bright pink terno and new hair style.

With “Captive” and “Thy Womb,” Brilliante Mendoza has gone beyond the indie films catergory; those two are super productions, if you ask me. Brilliante has lured foreign investors which is a good thing, but I hope they do not impose or impinge on his disquieting themes, spectacular imagery, nor in his choice of actors. I marveled at the unrivalled portrayals of Rustica Carpio, Anita Linda, Angel Aquino, and Nora Aunor.

    NORA’S FANS SHOULD STAND UP

    Published : Thursday, November 01, 2012
Written by : Bong de Leon

SUPERSTAR Nora Aunor will have two entries in the December Metro Manila Film Festival. We urge the fans of Ate Guy to watch her movie and not just rant about her being one and only superstar. They should help her create a miracle at the box-office as today’s generation are asking why she is called the Superstar.

Save your money for the holiday and watch “Thy Womb” for it’s not just a relevant movie. Its acting is superb. It is an indie film at its best with a story that will touch your hearts. We are now making a fearless forecast: Nora is a sure winner as best actress for her role in “Thy Womb.”

She is also in “El Presidente” which tackles the life of General Emilio Aguinaldo. Nora plays the wife of Aguinaldo, played by ER Ejercito, who is also predicted to bag the best actor award.

El Presidente is endorsed by the Department of Education for its historical value and will be shown internationally. Many big stars are appearing in cameo roles in this film.
