Different Noranian groups performed in honor of the Superstar at the Aberdeen Court. Also in attendance were TV5 entertainment head Perci Intalan, TV5 talent manager Noel Ferrer, the actress‘s personal manager Boy Palma, German Moreno, award-winning writer Ricky Lee, actor Edgar Allan Guzman, and daughter Matet.

Aside from the Bona, which will be made to a stage play by Eugene Domingo, the Superstar Nora Aunor is set to endorse another play based on her film Bakit Bughaw Ang Langit, which will star Edgar Allan Guzman and Katherine Luna. The Superstar will ask Mario O‘Hara to be in charge of the project.Nora herself is looking for a good material for an original theater project for herself.

House resolution proposes naming Nora Aunor a National Artist

MANILA, Philippines – Offering a breather from the doldrums of politics and high prices of commodities, a lawmaker on Monday offered some “feel good” news by proposing to make actress Nora Aunor a National Artist.

Bacolod Rep. Anthony Golez Jr. said the multi-awarded actress, a talent of TV5, is a “national treasure” and that her achievements and contributions to the Philippine movie industry are more than enough to qualify her for the prestigious title.

“The Filipino people are now entangled in so many public issues like the seemingly uncontrollable rise of prices of fuel and commodities but we should not lose hope. There are a lot of things going for our country and the enshrinement of Ms. Nora Aunor as a National Artist is a sure feel- good thing that the Filipinos can hold on to,” Golez said in the explanatory note of his House Resolution 2317.

Its wording goes thus: “A Resolution urging his excellency President Benigno Aquino III, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to confer to Nora Aunor the honor of being named as a National Artist of the Philippines for her immense contribution to Philippine Arts.”

According to Golez, the actress enjoys broad acceptance and recognition by her peers and critics and by the Filipino people. She has received local and international recognition for her acting, and her works form an important part of Philippine culture.

The lawmaker added that Aunor “has brought not only entertainment but also inspiration to the entire Philippine nation.”

A few months back, she starred in the lead role in the TV5 telenovela “Sa Ngalan ng Ina,” and has a five-year contract with the Kapatid network.

For her acclaimed talent in singing and acting, the diminutive Aunor was christened Superstar by her fans.

Born Maria Leonora Teresa Cabaltera Aunor, the actress, who is also popularly called Ate Guy, started her career at 12 years old by joining amateur singing contests.

Winning one contest after the other, she was soon given a break in the movies and has proven her worth, eventually starring in award-winning hits like Himala, Paru-Parong Itim, Dalawang Mukha ng Tagumpay, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, to name a few.

She received numerous Best Actress awards for her performances and was named one of the 10 Best Asian Actresses of the Decade in 2010.

To qualify as a National Artist, the following guidelines are followed: 1) Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural heritage of the country; 2) Filipino artistic accomplishment at its highest level and to promote creative expression as significant to the development of a national cultural identity; and 3) Filipino artists who have dedicated their lives to their works to forge new paths and directions for future generations of Filipino artists.

The National Artist award is given by the President of the Philippines and is screened or recommended by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

    Venice competition for Asian trio

By Patrick Frater and Stephen Cremin
    Thu, 26 July 2012, 17:59 PM (HKT)

    Festival News

A trio of Asian films have been selected for main competition at the Venice International Film Festival, the first under the new stewardship of Alberto BARBERA.

KIM Ki-duk 김기덕 | 金基德's Pieta 피에타 (pictured) will compete with KITANO Takeshi 北野武's yakuza tale Outrage Beyond アウトレイジ ビヨンド and Brillante Ma. MENDOZA's Thy Womb Sa 'yong sinapupunan.

Kim describes his new film, about a cruel loan shark who falls for a woman claiming to be his mother, as his first commercial film in four years, since directing Dream 비몽 (2008) that premiered in San Sebastian.

Kitano stars again in his follow-up to Outrage アウトレイジ (2010), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, as yakuza boss Otomo who is released from prison into the midst of a yakuza war and a police crackdown.

For Filipino director Mendoza, Thy Womb will be his second film this year in the competition section of one of the world's top three festivals. In February he screened Captive in Berlin, to mixed reviews.

Womb is the story of a midwife, played by acting legend Nora AUNOR, coping with the irony of her own infertility while handling the deprivations of the 'sea gypsy' community in the Tawi-Tawi region.

The Venice line-up may be slimmed down compared with previous years, but it remains awash with big name art-house talent, including Terrence Mallick, Olivier Assayas, Ulrich Seidel, Harmony Korine and Marco Bellocchio.

As previously announced The Reluctant Fundamentalist, by North American based Indian director Mira NAIR, will open the festival in an out-of-competition slot.

Asian films in out-of-competition slots announced today are Stephen FUNG 馮德倫's Tai Chi 0 太極之從零開始, KUROSAWA Kiyoshi 黒沢清's 270-minute TV mini-series Penance 贖罪 and 3-D shark movie Bait.

Penance was broadcast on Japanese cable television in Jan and Feb 2012. Its four episodes are based on the original writing of MINATO Kanae 湊かなえ, whose novel was adapted into another female-themed suspense, Confessions 告白 (2010).
