Miss Universe Eyes Mississippi
By ROBERT R. REQUINTINA
August 25, 2012
After months of speculation, organizers are finally setting their eyes on Biloxi, Mississippi, USA as venue for the staging of the 61st Miss Universe beauty pageant in December.
This was confirmed by Stella Marquez Araneta, chairperson of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI), which sends delegates to other international beauty contests such as Miss International, Miss Tourism Queen International, and Miss Supranational.
“They are looking at the Biloxi Casino Resort in Mississippi. The pageant will be held either second week or third week of December,” said Mrs. Araneta during the send-off party for Elaine Kay Moll who will represent the Philippines in the 2012 Miss Supranational beauty contest in Sopot, Poland on Sept. 14, 2012.
Araneta’s announcement ended rumors that the Miss Universe contest would be cancelled this year due to time constraint. With the staging of Miss Universe pageant in December, there is a possibility that the succeeding pageants in the future would also be held during the holidays, she added.
“First it was in May. Then, they moved it to July. Then September. Now it’s December. Perhaps they will stage it every December in the future.”
Araneta says there is also a possibility that the schedule of coronation dates for the Bb. Pilipinas in the future would be adjusted, due to the sudden change in the schedule of Miss Universe pageant.
“I don’t know how this will affect our local pageants in terms of schedule. We will still discuss it.”
The Miss Universe pageant was pushed to December to give way to other important events such as the recent London Olympics and the forthcoming US Presidential Elections in November.
With the pageant’s new schedule, Leila Lopes of Angola now holds the record for the longest reign of Miss Universe, spanning almost 15 months. The same record goes with Miss Universe third runner-up Shamcey Supsup, of the Philippines.
Janine Tugonon, who will represent the country in the Miss Universe beauty pageant this year, is now in thick of preparations for the contest. “I’m very excited for the pageant. Sana malaman na natin talaga kung saan ang venue kasi excited na rin ang mga relatives and friends ko to watch the Miss Universe contest.”
A Pharmacy cum laude graduate at the University of Sto. Tomas, Tugonon has also trained at Ballet Manila. She stands 5’9” and measures 35-25-36.
Tugonon, 22, of Balanga, Bataan, says she is now focused on hitting the gym to achieve a toned body.
On her gown and national costume for the pageant, she says they still have to be finalized. Tugonon says she has not seen all the pictures of this year’s candidates, but she finds Misses Venezuela and Ecuador beautiful, based on their photo shoots.
Supsup, also a top-notch architect, wished Tugonon good luck on her journey to the Miss Universe pageant. “She has transformed a lot! Kung maaalala mo lang ‘yung mga early days namin sa Bb. Pilipinas, and compare it these days, you can say Janine has really improved.”
Like a big sister, Supsup also gave tips to Tugonon for the pageant. “I told her what to wear, when to impress, or what to do in this kind of activity. Things like that.”
Recalling her days in the Miss Universe pageant in Brazil last year, in which she stormed the stage with her signature “tsunami” walk, Supsup says the only thing she regretted about the pageant was that she never explored a lot of time with the other girls.
“Language barrier was the big problem. One time, I joined the table with the Latina candidates. For a while it was OK pero later, hindi na kami nagkakaintidihan kasi we don’t speak the same language. That’s why I decided to join the Asian candidates. Our common language is English, kaya nagkakaintindihan kami.”
Supsup also says she behaved well during the pageant and she never got involved in any cat fights with the other girls. “Mabait naman ako during the pageant. Wala naman grabeng away na nangyari sa mga candidates that time. But I remember on several occasions, nagtatalo ‘yung ibang girls sa paggamit ng computer. Mahaba kasi ang pila nun. After rehearsals, or during our break, unahan na kami sa paggamit ng computer.”
After her reign in Bb. Pilipinas, Supsup says she attended to dinner or lunch invites. “Food trip talaga ang nangyari nun. For a while hindi ako nag-diet.”
These days, Supsup says that she is still in contact with other candidates in the Miss Universe pageant. “Yung iba may contact ako sa Facebook. Recently, I played host to Miss Singapore who visited our country. She went to Boracay, pero I toured her in Metro Manila.”
Supsup also keeps herself busy with architectural projects. “I am also studying how to speak Spanish and training on TV hosting.”
Philippines' Elaine Kay Moll 3rd Runner Up in Miss Supranational 2012

Miss Philippines Elaine Kay Moll had a 4th place finish (3rd runner up) in the 2012 Miss Supranational pageant held in Warsaw, Poland. Elaine Kay Moll is the Philippines' first representative to the said pageant.
The grand coronation night of the Poland-based pageant was held September 14 and Miss Belarus Ekaterina Buraya was crowned Miss Supranational 2012 in the 4th edition of what was dubbed as the world's fastest-growing pageant. Poland's very own Monika Lewczuk crowned her successor at the finals night.
Here are the winners of the 4th Miss Supranational Pageant (2012):
Miss Supranational 2012
Ekaterina Buraya of Belarus

Nanthawan Wannachutha of Thailand
2nd Runner-Up
Michaela Dihlova of the Czech Republic
3rd Runner-Up
Elaine Kay Moll of the Philippines

The Philippine franchise for Miss Supranational was reportedly acquired by BPCI prior to its holding this year's pageant. However, the Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational crown was not given. Elaine Kay Moll, the first runner up of Bb. Pilipinas 2012 was handpicked by the organizers to participate in Miss Supranational.
Elaine is the first Bb. Pilipinas 2012 beauty to be fielded in an international pageant and this is quite a good start for the country. The Philippine representative to Miss World, Queenierich Rehman also did well, landing in the Top 15 and making world headlines with her beatboxing skills.
Kudos to Elaine Kay Moll. Going up there without much preparations and landing in the top 5 out of 53 candidates is a great achievement. You make us all proud!

A PROMISING FUTURE FOR PINAY BEAUTIES
A promising future is ahead of us after the Philippines in its very first time joining the Miss Supranational beauty competition in Warsaw last September 14 placed third.
Elaine Kay Moll, a 5’11’ model and a former basketball player was named third runner up in the recent staging of the fourth edition of the annual pageant competition held in the said city, the capital of Poland last Friday.
No one could ever be so excited than BPCI head Ms. Stella Marquez quoting her through BPCI’s public relation officer Tessa Mangahas: “Her performance enhances the standing of the Philippines as a force to contend with in the global pageant circuit.”
Beauty pageant stalwart Stella Marquez could not be more thrilled seeing the country’s future in the beauty competition after Moll’s recent achievement as more than 50 contestants all over the world joined said pageant.
Miss Belarus Katsiaryana Buraya was crowned Miss Supranational for this year.
Moll is a Business Management student at National University, was born and raised in Naga City, Camarines Sur. With her achievement, she has become the third Bb. Pilipinas beauty in three years to make it to the finals of a global beauty pageant after Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj (also from Camarines Sur) and Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup.
Shall we expect bigger things to come in the years to come? Just asking…

Nicole Schmitz Makes It to Miss International Semis, Delivers Terrific Speech (Video)
October 22, 2012
The Philippines has made the cut in Miss International for 5th consecutive year courtesy of Nicole Schmitz.
During the final phase of Miss International, the Top 15 semi-finalists each deliver a speech on why they should win the crown.
Our very own Nicole Schmitz made a terrific speech that could have won her the crown or at least put her as one of the runners up. What are they thinking?
Nevertheless, Nicole continued the Philippines’ streak in placing in Miss International for fifth consecutive year.
isn't Miss Earth 2012 going to be in Bali? so i reckon, Miss Indonesia is going to be a shoe-in the finals night.
Miss Earth 2012 No Longer in Bali, Indonesia?
October 20, 2012
Contrary to earlier reports that Miss Earth 2012 is going to be held in Bali, Indonesia, the pageant’s official website has released an article saying that it’s gonna be held in Manila.
The 12th edition of the Miss Earth pageant was supposed to be held in Bali, Indonesia. Apparently, it did not push through as the pageant’s official website says it’s going to be held in Manila this November. There are reports that the venue will be the Mall of Asia Arena but this is not yet confirmed by Carousel Productions as of this posting.
One thing is for sure as of the moment, that the 12th edition of the pageant is scheduled on November 24 with Olga Álava from Ecuador crowing her successor.
This is the 4th time that a foreign country canceled hosting responsibilities for Miss Earth. It happened first in 2006 when it was supposed to be held in Santiago, Chile. 2nd was in 2011 when it was supposed to be held in Thailand but was later cancelled because of the floods. The 3rd time was earlier this year when Vietnam was supposed to host the pageant for the 3rd time, but apparently, they backed out. Indonesia was supposed to take the hosting privilege from Vietnam for this year’s pageant but according to reports, they did not meet the requirements. That’s why Miss Earth is coming back to the Philippines just like what happened last year when Thailand backed-out.
In 2013, the pageant is said to be happening in Bangkok’s Impact Arena and hopefully, it pushes through.
Meanwhile, Miss Earth’s theme for this year is in line with the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of 2012 as the “International Year of Sustainable Energy for All”, which aims to ensure universal access to modern energy services.
Here’s the press release from the organizers of Miss Earth:
The search is now on for the next environmental beauty who will serve as an ambassadress and protector of the Earth’s natural resources. This year, as the world celebrates The International Year of Sustainable Energy, Carousel Productions Inc. will be bringing in 80 to 90 delegates from all across the globe to involve them in new and various challenges that will not only hone them into beauties for a cause but enable them to support and give recognition to organizations and companies who are allies of the green movement.
This year, our Earth has experienced increased calamities and the need to restore it has reached an alarming level. Coming together for a special advocacy, the MISS EARTH beauties will also address the urgency of the Earth’s restoration and healing in a powerful motion for environmental awareness through the power of prayer to give that light of hope to every nation, to be as one towards a renewed Earth.
Be one with us in hosting the most prestigious and relevant beauty pageant in the world to echo the earth’s clamor for environmental renewal at its ever growing urgency. This year, MISS EARTH 2012 coronation will be held in the Philippines on November 24, 2012 at 8:00PM live telecast on Starworld and shown on November 25, 2012, 10:00AM on ABS CBN, TFC -The Filipino Channel and also on channels of participating counties worldwide.
