Laguna Phuket International Marathon 2011: On Your Mark… Get Set… Go!

Bangkok--30 Mar--Francom AsiaLaguna Phuket International Marathon, Asia's largest and fastest growing destination marathon event, is set to light up the world-famous resort island of Phuket once again with its sixth edition run from June 10 to 12, 2011. Among the thousands of participants in the event will be Thai-German star Mario Maurer, who doubles as the marathon’s Charity Ambassador, and 5 contestants from the latest season of The Biggest Loser Asia.


Following the massive success of the fifth edition in 2010, which drew 5,329 participants from 34 countries, race organiser Go Adventure Asia plans to delight runners of all ages with five separate events set on a course certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS). Regular runners and marathon veterans can look forward to the 42.195 km full marathon as well as a 21.097 km half marathon and a 10.5 km run. Also available for families are the non-competitive 5 km walk and 2 km kids race.

The 2011 Laguna Phuket International Marathon is expected to attract thousands of runners to Phuket and provide the province with an instant boost in tourism and economic activity. The annual marathon event has proven itself to be a major international attraction since its inception in 2006, and Phuket Province and the Tourism Authority of Thailand expect the 2011 edition to bring an energetic buzz to the island once more.

All five events in the marathon will kick off in the morning of June 12 at the Laguna Beach Resort, courtesy of title sponsor Laguna Phuket, one of Asia’s finest destination resorts. Interested runners can register for the marathon online at www.phuketmarathon.com and take advantage of early-bird discounts, or opt for on-site registration during the pre-race expo on June 10 and 11. Registered runners can also purchase tickets to attend the pre-race Pasta Party in the evening of June 11 to meet up with fellow participants and enjoy delectable dishes from Laguna Beach Resort’s The Grange Steak & Seafood Grill and Café Loma.

"We want to offer every participant a truly rewarding experience amidst Phuket's fantastic surroundings," said co-race director Mr. Songkram Kraisonthi. "While the marathon does include competitive events, the key element here is not competition. We simply want to see runners or even entire families come have fun under the Phuket sun while giving themselves a healthy fitness boost as well.”

In addition to being the region’s top destination marathon event, the Laguna Phuket International Marathon also provides participants a chance to make charity contributions through Laguna Phuket’s Developing Sustainable Schools programme – a collaborative effort between Laguna Beach Resort and the Population and Community Development Association.

“By participating in this year’s marathon, runners can give themselves a healthy physical challenge and also help improve the lives of children,” said actor and event Charity Ambassador Mario Maurer, who will accompany young runners in the 2 km kids race. “This makes the Laguna Phuket International Marathon an event you just cannot miss.”

Charity donations from the 2011 edition will be used to support the development of Baan Klong Mai Daeng School in Surat Thani’s Chaiya district. Runners can make their contributions simply by signing up. Additionally, a donation box will be available within the pre-race expo on June 10 and 11.

The Laguna Phuket International Marathon is presented by Laguna Phuket Resorts & Hotels, Phuket Province, Go Adventure Asia and Amazing Field. It is co-sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, 100PLUS Isotonic Drink and Timex. Other partners include Anda Focus, ASI Photos, Bangkok Hospital Phuket, ChampionChip, Go Thailand Tours, Nam Man Muay, The Phuket Gazette, Phuket Gazette TV and 91.5 FM Phuket Island Radio. The Phuket Marathon is a member of the Association of International Marathons and Road Races (AIMS). The course is AIMS measured and certified.

Too busy to serve still a rocker phone pest returns

Actor Mario Maurer is under fire after he declared he would seek a deferral of his military conscription draw for a third year running.

Mario says he is too busy to serve King and country by entering the draw, and that Thais can serve in other ways _ merely by being good people.

His remarks surprised some fans, who wonder whether he is really that interested in doing his duty.

The military, meanwhile, wants to take a look at his university attendance record to make sure he is studying, rather than entertaining. A deferral is allowed for study, but not if the student is really working.

"Many people will be affected if my name is drawn for conscription service. I can't afford to take the risk," Mario said.

"What will happen to the work I have completed but which has yet to be released? If they want to make changes, I need to be around to help."

Mario, 22, was among half a dozen prominent people named by the military last week as those who are eligible for this year's draw, which takes place early next month.

The actor, however, said he will apply to have the draw rolled over for another year, his third deferral in a row.

Mario is not worried about public reaction, however, as he reckons he still does his bit for King and country.

"Thais can serve the nation in noble ways other than being soldiers. As actors, we are helping keep our fans entertained, which is a form of service to the country. Just by being good people, we can serve the King," he said hopefully.

Other celebrities called up for military service this year include singer Pirat "Mike" Nitipaisalkul, and actors Alex Rendell and Chanapol "Aof" Sattaya.

Alex Rendell, who is being called for the draw this year for the first time, said he will seek a deferral when he reports to his military recruitment office next month, as he is too busy with work and study.

"Part of me wants to join the military, and part of me does not. Most boys dream of being soldiers, and I would like to be an air force pilot if the time came.

"However, I would like to graduate at the same time as my peers, so will ask to put it off until I finish my degree," he said.

Thais who enter their 21st year and who haven't performed military reserve training at school have to report for conscription.

Those who draw a red card have to enter service for up to two years. Those who draw a black card can breathe a sigh of relief and resume their normal lives.

However, Thais who are studying can apply to have their name deferred for the conscription draw until they are 26, or have finished their studies.

Actor Aof said he will apply for an exemption on health grounds this year for a third time, after he suffered a collapsed lung while on the set of a soap opera.

"I am not applying for a deferral, and nor did I apply for one last year. My health isn't up to military service," he said.

Mike Pirat, formerly of the singing duo Golf and Mike, has yet to declare whether he will join the draw. Siam Dara magazine says he is likely to apply for a deferral _ just like his elder brother Golf the year before _ as he is still studying.

Mike told reporters last month that he regards performing as service to the nation, which suggests that, like Mario, he believes that lining up for the conscription draw can just wait.

On web boards, people wonder what superstar Mario could be thinking when he claims that good behaviour alone qualifies as service to the nation.

"If that was the case, Mario, nobody would bother signing up for military service, and we'd have no one to protect the nation," one wrote.

A spokesman for the army chief said the military would ask to look at Mario's university attendance records.

Mario, a second-year student at Ramkamhaeng University, said the military is welcome to check his records. The university applies for deferrals on his behalf.

"I admit that I have not studied regularly in the last year, as I have been too busy with work. However, I have now arranged my schedule to fit in better with my work commitments," he said

No retreat on Tweets

A talent manager is engaged in stealth attacks via Twitter with a young actress, whom he accuses of being a fake.

Nirun "Coco" Limsomwong started his war of words with actress Sumontip "Koop Kip" Leuangthai after she broke up with actor Mario Maurer.

Koop Kip last month called it quits with Mario after their seven-year relationship failed to "develop" _ though insisted, confusingly, that they were never anything more than friends.

Mario agreed, saying talk of love at their age was inappropriate. "We're too busy working and making money," he said.

Coco, who has known the couple since the days that Mario was a member of his talent stable, left a remark on his Twitter page saying he was bored with claims that they were merely friends, when anyone could see it was more than that.

He did not name the couple, nor has Koop Kip named Coco in her response, but it is quite clear who everyone is talking about.

"I'm bored with this deceptive couple who quit but claimed they were never together as boyfriend and girlfriend.

"If that's the case, what were they doing living together at a condo in Ratchadaphisek Soi 10 for so long?" he asked.

He has since stepped up his attack, referring to an actress called "Gnoop Gnip" whom he said liked to pilfer money intended for her boyfriend's mother. He said the girl's father had threatened to take his life.

Last week, Koop Kip left a barbed remark on her own Twitter account. "Bad people do only bad things. We should feel sorry for them, and pray. If we don't hold a grudge, and forgive, the badness may go away."

Asked about her Twitter remark, Koop Kip denied she was singling out Coco personally. "I don't care what he thinks," she retorted.

She denied she and Mario ever lived at the condo together, though he did pay visits _ but merely as a friend.

"I left that condo three years ago. That's all in the past," she said.

"If you want to know the truth, Mario and I considered coming out as an item, but decided we should take a step back first, to see if it was actually what each of us wanted," she said, explaining her decision to cool things off with Mario.

The pair rarely see each other now, as they are too busy.

Mario (Love of Siam, 4 Romances, Rahtree Reborn) left Coco two years ago for rival talent manager Supachai "A" Sriwichit, who now manages the affairs of both Mario and Koop Kip.

Coco has yet to forgive him for leaving the nest.
