Buggy pa nga lang esp. yung ibang NCAA teams dahil nagka-crash. Sa ngayon LC at MIT pa lang ang nasusubukan ko. Pero maga-update daw sila very soon.

  7. #1507

    Squires in shining armor

    Squires in shining armor

    by: Sanita Valparaíso

Manila fascinates me. Five years ago I found myself in this place and that first visit craved for more. I like the people and its history.

Manila is Intramuros, or Intramuros is a reflection of the city's past. I live in the present and I see the city as it is now but the tell-tale signs in the surroundings carry me to live in the past, and this experience is a fascination to me.

The baluarte, the basílicas and cathedrals, the old colegíos, and the sport of basketball, I like them all in Intramuros. I am a basketball buff and any thud of a ball would always catch my attention so that I skipped the Fort Santiago itinerary upon noticing the Squires in practice at its gym in Colegío de San Juan de Letran. The team is widely considered as the best in the Philippines today.

Body stretching, weightlifting, plyometrics, drills and scrimmages-- these stuffs I also saw in Europe. Philippine basketball has improved by leaps and bounds these days, and these Squires know that they are in the right track to greatness. I whiled my day watching the boys playing hoops inside that building with championship banners hanging around and trophies flaunted at the entrance way.

There is one player whose play and athleticism impressed me much. His name is JJ Abao, a 6-1 swingman. But in all indications, this 17-year-old cager can practically play all positions in the hardcourt. With a 40-inch vertical elevation, this aggressive and fighting hoopster could be the rebirth of then-promising Shawn Kemp, albeit the smaller version. At his Facebook account in which I was privileged to see, the JJ Abao of three years ago was a natural power forward with mastery in controlling rebounds. He banged bodies with Porter(Cebu City) and the latter's teammate Julius Cadavis(Cebu City), and these two Cebuanos were both beaten in the paint, not to mention the bitter defeat to the hands of the victorious Cagayan de Oro quintet during the hotly contested 24th Season Milo Pasarelle (14-under) National Championship in Baguio in the northern part of the Islands. The diminutive (Dennis) Rodman-like rebounder from CDO also locked horns with another tall and hefty forwards of NCR team, but at this time losing the Gold Medal to the much bigger team of Gelo Vito, and Andre Paras and Marcial of La Salle GH. These three behemoths took turns in tiring JJ Abao in the paint.

As there would only be one small rebounder in NBA as embodied in one and only Dennis Rodman, the same is true in high school basketball. At a visit in Milo BEST(Basketball Efficiency and Scientific Training), the director recalled the feats of his illustrious alumni, and he was proud of them. JJ Abao is now playing with the Letran Squires, Gelo Vito in La Salle Greenies, Kevin Porter in Ateneo Blue Eagles, Julius Cadavis in Arellano Chiefs, and both Andre Paras and Marcial in the elite team of La Salle Greenies.

The Real Madrid is now turning its look on Filipino athletes. Be in basketball or in soccer football, the rich team in Europe is interested in moulding Filipino breeds to play in the ACB and JJ Abao is one of them.

Better start taking care of the kid so he can be a Knight.

yung line up ba ng Knights sa Fil-oil yun na rin ang line up sa upcoming season ng NCAA?

^Most likely, ganyan. Pero let's see.

Per Inboundpass: Letran 79, Mapua 55 in the Fil-Oil game yesterday. Mark Cruz topscored with 27 points. DNP: Kevin & Junjun Alas, VJ Espiritu.

    The boxscores:

    Letran 79 – Cruz 27, Belorio 11, Lituania 9, Cortes 8, Almazan 6, Pantin 6, Racal 4, Luib 3, Gabawan 2, Buenaflor 2, Almario 1
    MIT 55 – Nimes 22, Brana 9, Estrella 6, Banal 5, Saitanan 4, Stevens 4, Chien 4, Ighalo 1

Note: I inferred Belorio's score since the original Inboundpass boxscores were erroneous.

I was able to watch yesterday's juniors game at the Arena. Our Letran Squires battled the De La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers... As expected, our Squires went on to crush their junior counterparts leading by as much as 27 (if I'm not mistaken), 63-36, in one stretch before closing the game at 80-67. We have a strong first 5... and have a good 10 man rotation... What I was expecting though was for the coach to utilize his other bench players during the latter part of the game when we were already leading by more than 20 points... Based from our experience, we would really need a deep bench so that when worse comes to worse (injuries, foul troubles, suspensions), we would have reliable players to take over. I still remember when our Squires team led by Khobuntin, Tampus, Ongteco, and Cruz came out short against the San Beda Red Cubs composed of Ludovice, Dela Cruz, Sara, Gotladera, and Javier in the NCAA finals more than 3 years ago..

Furthermore, we need a reliable point guard to back up Galeon. Geli is speedy and active but just too small. He would be a mismatch problem with the opposing PGs from teams like SBC, SSC-R, and LSGH. Castro on the other hand committed several turnovers which gave DLS-Z several fastbreak opportunities. Good thing we have dominant bigmen in Quinto, Villanueva, Alarce, Ramos, Abao, and Sazon. I just hope that Nambatac decides and moves on to become a Knight after season 88, joining Cruz and Luib. He would be a great addition to our seniors roster. At the arena, I saw coaches Gee Abanilla (DLSU), and Raymond Valenzona (SSC-R) watching the game. The former is probably scouting for possible recruits to add to his growing list of guards (Nambatac?, I hope not), while the latter is scouting the Squires in general. Coach Louie and Kris also stayed in the game to probably make sure that we keep our players... I'm also happy to see coach Junjie Ablan who's now an assistant coach of the Squires.

^Coach Gee's son is playing for DLS-Zobel. Hopefully, yun ang gusto niyang mapanood at hindi si Nambatac. Sana.

Letran 69, UST 86 in Fil-Oil caging yesterday. Knights were off both in offense and defense, Tigers just couldn't miss. And that was the ball game.

The Knights are now tied with the Tigers and the Green Archers for 3rd to 5th, and so have to win the game vs. San Beda on June 2 to salvage a place in the quarterfinals. UST is expected to win vs. UP, while La Salle will have a tougher time against Ateneo, also on the same play date. Laban!

wala bang balita kung ano ang inihanda ng Letran for the season 88 opening ceremonies?

  18. #1518
It seems that MANCOM is keeping us blind from everything. No official venue yet, no official schedule yet, no anything! The opening is on June 23 and I have never seen any press release about the NCAA. The closest thing was an AVP by AKTV which is rarely shown. How do you expect people to flock and watch the games?

Plus, the out of town games idea is just absurd.

Hay ano na bang nangyayari sa Letran. This was clearly not the case in 2005, the last time we hosted.

Two weeks before the opening, wala pang definite venue? Gusto ko ng bumili ng tickets pero pano gagawin ko eh hindi nga sila sure. Akala ko ba last year pa lang plantsado na to.

I don't even want to start with the current state of our basketball program.

Pano ba naman gaganahan sumoporta ang alumni niya. Tsk tsk.

Sana maging super yaman ako at mabili ko ang Letran sa mga dominikanong pari na nagpapatakbo nito

all we know is the schedule of the opening.

    4pm Opening Ceremony
    5pm CSJL vs SSC-R
    7pm JRU vs Mapua
    venue: SMART-ARANETA Coliseum

gusto sana mg NCAA ay sa SM MOA ARENA sana gawin ang opening kaso ayaw pumayag ng TV5, gusto nila sa Big Dome.
