Don't you guys think it's embarassing?

Correct. Nasa pangalan ko ang edad ko.
Agree. Yung kasabihan na experience is the best teacher ay totoong totoo. Kaya low grades in school do not guarantee success or failure in your chosen field.
Dominated pala by UP graduates yung board exam for chemists. Goes to show marami pa ring matalino sa UP. Pero dahil UP is UP, it will always be a magnet sa mga pinakamatatalinong nilalang.
I'm almost tempted to ask kung anong batch ka kaso ayoko ring matanong para secret ang edad. It's just that nung nag-UP ako many years ago, ganyan din reaction ko. Iniisip ko lang if you are a lot younger and ganyan din ang views mo ngayon, then it is possible na meron lang kasi tayong expectations na maka-masa ang mga taga-UP so when we see all these rich kids, yung mga apathetic na ang concern lang ay makakuha ng high grades, etc., we think there has been a recent change when that "change in culture" actually happened decades ago. That what everyone sees now is really the new norm.
I have no doubt there has been a change based on the stories I have exchanged with my parents and relatives who went to UP a long, long time ago.
Dun sa issue na "apathetic" na ang UP students ngayon, we have to recognize though na different kasi ang circumstances noon kesa ngayon. Nung panahon ni Marcos, mataas talaga ang level of student activism. Pero nung dumating si Cory at eventually mawala si Marcos, I think, kung ako ang tatanungin, dun nagsimula ang sinasabi nilang apathy ng mga taga-UP ngayon. Yung old school activism went out of style so to speak. We have to look at the possibility kasi na itong mga student activists forgot to adjust to the current times. They made themselves obsolete. Puro pa rin sila anger kung magsalita, as if we are still under the same environment nung 70s. Sure a lot of the issues like poverty, unequal opportunities, exploitation of laborers/unfair labor practices, corruption, nangyayari pa rin yan ngayon. But the approach of some student activists repel instead of attract student participation.
Salamat talaga at pinalad akong makapasok sa UP.
Totoo yan.

I hate that even news writers mess this up. Kaya nga may editors di ba? Urgh
As for this topic, I would say that this is totally unfair to people like me and my brother who actually do good in school and worked hard to get those grades (in my case, including my degree) and who have parents who work hard not only to provide for us in the most basic sense but to ensure that we get the things that they didn't have the luxury of having when they were growing up.

Don't make conclusions based on some people he or she may know because the few people who happens to have very sick attitudes don't necessarily represent the whole campus.
It doesn't matter whether you're rich or you're poor. As long as you have brains, you are entitled to study in UP.
"Equal opportunities" doesn't mean favoring the poor over the rich, kaya nga "equal".
In the first place, there's isn't even an accurate measure of intelligence. In terms of board exam rates? UP still has nearly perfect passing percentages across most professional programs.
But well, yeah, mas marami na ngang burgis sa UP ngayon.
Yes. Marami na ngang mayaman sa UP, but I don't think nababawasan ang utak. Marami pa rin matalino, IMO, lahat matalino. Olrayt!
Some reasons:
1. Free market seems to favor those who have good genes: talented, intelligent, beautiful people. So, if you're intelligent, you'll probably succeed and eventually become rich in the future. Intelligence can be inherited genetically so your kids would probably become intelligent too. The result is, there are more smart rich kids than there are smart financially-troubled kids. (in accounting, "probable" means "more than 50% likely")
2. Quality primary education today are now hardly accessible to those who are financially troubled.
You're making generalizations of the entire university population based sa mga nakita lang ng sibling mo. To be honest, ang liit lang naman ng impact ng mga nangyayari sa School of Home Economics sa overall state ng UP.
The University of the Philippines has a broad range of personalities as one of its distinct characteristics as a representative ground for the entire nation--as such, even elitists could be found here. On that sense, baka nag-totroll ka lang sa thread na ito-- making a bold generalization that the entire university is as flawed as some of the people at the school of home economics.
Btw, sa isang point mo: dormer ako, so let me tell you hindi talaga empty yung dorms because many students are in apartments. Hindi talaga. Pinag-aawayan pa nga mga slots e. Haha.
They competed with the rest of the best and the brightest through the UPCAT to get them to UP and got in. So what? Give it a rest. They deserve a spot as much as anyone else. Equality naman di ba? No preferences. Rich OR poor.
I think that's called a fallacy in economics-- assuming that something that is true for a part is true for the whole. UP is diverse. That's one of its alluring qualities. Sige, let's say kung magtransfer sibling mo sa Ateneo, I'd be pretty damned sure na most of the people your sibling meets there would be pretty well-off. So, aalis siya sa 'cheap imitation' ng mga elite schools to get to the real thing?(for such schools, I'm willing to bet would be filled with quite a number of elitists as well) Yep, seems pretty 'logical' for me. *sarcasm
Maybe your sibling's not right for UP after all for assuming that the school is like that after seeing just a small part of it. I don't blame your sibling though.
One more thing, see the story of the blind men and the elephant.
I agree, why make knowledge of current events a basis for one's IQ? Ako nga walang paki sa world news, yes gusto ko malaman ang happenings pero I'm not a debate type of person na dapat ganito ganiyan blah blah. So bobo na pala ako.
