Pero dito, hindi ako sure kung applicable kay Slaughter.

Sabi kasi for the duration of UAAP. Yung PBA stint ay UAAP off-season nangyari. Therefore, parang hindi applicable ito.
strict ang interpretation ng specific rule na ito ang UAAP:

An athlete who is in the process of establishing residency requirements in the UAAP shall not play for another team in any league; otherwise, an additional one (1) year residency shall be required. Such athlete may play for his/her own university outside the UAAP.
ang nangyari kasi was that Slaughter, who was still in the process of establishing his residency requirements since he transferred from UV to ADMU, played for Smart Gilas not just in the PBA but also in the Asian Games. hindi pwedeng gamitin na pambutas na "national team commitment" yung ginawa ni Slaughter kasi mismong ang ADMU ay alam na nag-eestablish pa lang si Slaughter ng residency niya, thus hindi siya pwedeng maglaro for another team (i.e., Smart Gilas) in any league.

yung PBA at maging ang Asian Games will both fall under the category of "any league" because Slaughter played under another team (Smart Gilas) while establishing his residency in the UAAP. ang participation ni Slaughter as a player for ADMU for the Filoil Flying V Pre-season Invitational Cup lang yung pwede based on that same rule since he will play for his own university (ADMU) in that league.

mabait pa ang UAAP if ever Slaughter will be proven guilty of such infraction. one year additional residency lang ang ipapataw sa kanya. sa kung sa ibang liga nangyari yan, Slaughter would have been banned for life.

if this rule holds true for slaughter, does that mean norbert torres of dlsu should serve another year of eligibility since he was part of the under 18 team that franz coached during his residency? also for parks since he played for the team that competed in he youth olympic games. how about cedric labing-isa and kyle neypes? werent they also part of the national youth team while they were serving their residency as a result of ust imposing the soc rivera rule on them?

Ibang klase talaga si Ben *******, spot-on basta to Ateneo's detriment.

Guilt? Eh di pa nga na-field in sa UAAP? Nako Ben *******, you can do better than that.

Reminders to those who are against Slaughter's eligibility this season is doing a great disservice to the country. Since future issues will be settled based on how this issue is settled and those who are half-Pinoy who wants to don the national colors and at the same time study for a UAAP (arguably the better league in honing basketball talents) school will be affected by the said rule.

    @centerfield Yes.

^ no because ipinagpaalam sila nang maayos ng respective teams nila sa UAAP. the difference between them and the case of Slaughter is that sumulat sila sa UAAP para ipagpaalam yung participation nila in such teams and competitions, all of which were approved and given the go signal by the league. sa case ni Slaughter, hindi talaga nagpaalam sa UAAP (i.e., hindi sumulat ang ADMU sa UAAP regarding Slaughter's participation in Smart Gilas).

Wow UAAP Board ka na ngayon? You know that all of them issued a letter, and all were approved?

As far as the rules are concerned, they never stated the necessity for a player doing residency who wants to play for a league to ask permission from the board. Assuming that they did asked and the board cleared them, then the same decision (due to the lack of provision necessitating players to ask permission while doing eligibility) should be applied to Greg Slaughter.

AND C'MON LET THE GUY PLAY. IT'S COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT GREG SLAUGHTER IS WITH SMART GILAS EVEN BeFORE HE STARTED DOING RESIDENCY FOR ATENEO.

THEN YOU BRING THE ISSUE UP JUST NOW. C'MON. ALL INTENTIONS ARE OBVIOUS.

PLEASE. GAMES ARE PLAYED IN THE COURT NOT INSIDE THE BOARDROOM.

Nakikiraan lang po, but aren't we losing perspective here? What was the rationale for SG, and Greg, Chris Tiu, JV Casio and the rest of the boys for that matter, for playing in the recent PBA tournament? Hindi ba para mahasa ang mga bata so that they would be in a better position to put up a fight for a slot in future international basketball wars? Chris, JV and the rest could have said "no" to SG and could have just joined the pro draft for whatever reasons they have. Money? Fame? Kanya-kanya na yan (well, Chris could just say "F-it! I don't need to do this - magnenegosyo na lang ako!"). The thing is, they put their personal interests in check temporarily to heed the call of Inang Pinas. This reminds me of the guy who jumps into the river to save a girl he doesn't know from drowning, and the first thing the public (hindi pa kasama diyan yung would have been victim) does is to charge him with public indecency because his right arm was rubbing against the woman's bosom while he was doing the sidestroke.

Not taking sides here. Just wanted to know if we've lost sight of the forest since we've been looking at the trees.

The UAAP Season 74 Eligibility Hullabaloo

So the broadsheets are spicing up the UAAP wars by releasing stories about the eligibility of two prominent names in the amateur ranks. Let's take a look at both cases.

Warning: I'm biased But I'll still try to be as objective as possible. (I said TRY)

Ray Ray Parks of the NU Bulldogs:
The Issue: He graduated HS in the US, which means he must establish a TWO-YEAR residency first before suiting up for Henry Sy's dawgs.

What I found: I've tried perusing the net for any proof that he finished HS in the US, but I honestly can't. All I could come up with is that he played for St. George's Independent School until the 10th grade then transferred to Melrose High School and helped that team win a class AAA title in his 11th grade (source). Based on this article, however, Parks has apparently been cleared by DepEd as a HS grad, which enabled him to enroll in NU as a freshie and serve 1 year of residency.

What the rules say: Based on how I understand the rules, it seems Parks did NOT finish HS in the Philippines, and should take establish his 2-year residency first, BUT there is one stipulation that goes like this:

"Except as provided in these Rules, the residency requirement for students who have studied abroad in order to be eligible to play in the UAAP, shall be two (2) consecutive years having been duly enrolled in the Philippines and having satisfactorily met the academic requirements by passing the minimum number of units required. For transferees, the rules on transfer students shall apply. Further, the following cases are exempted:
    Children of parents assigned abroad due to the nature of their jobs;
Children whose parents are OFWs and stationed abroad."

IF NU can establish that Bobby Parks went abroad due to his job, then MAYBE this some sort of "loophole" the Bulldogs can exploit. That would make his case similar to Maui Villanueva's case (or even Rich Alvarez's I guess), since Maui graduated in Japan, where his folks worked.

My take: I honestly think there's a strong chance Parks will be allowed to play. I think NU's best bet is to present proof that his case is similar to Maui's, which should make Parks's 1-year residency enough as per the precedents. The problem with this is Maui (nor Rich) served any residency. They were deemed eligible from the get-go. This means Parks's case could be seen as dissimilar altogether, OR the UAAP overlooked this precedent and mistakenly forced Parks to sit out one year. Needless to say, the board's decision here will affect NU's fortunes significantly, and perhaps spur some rule changes.

Greg Slaughter of the Ateneo Blue Eagles:
The Issue: He played for Smart-Gilas in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

What I found: Greg already served the required 1-year residency due to his transfer from a non-UAAP school, but, apparently, that's not even the issue in contention here. We cannot discount the fact he did play for Smart-Gilas not only in the PBA, but also in the 2010 Asian Games. This is what other entities are using as ammo for his ineligibility.

What the rules say: There are two things we should look at:

"5. An athlete who is in the process of establishing residency requirements in the UAAP shall not play for another team in any league; otherwise, an additional one (1) year residency shall be required. Such athlete may play for his/her own university outside the UAAP.
    6. An athlete proven to have played for another team in violation of the Rule above shall he prohibited from playing for one (l) calendar year starting from the time he/she last played for such team. The player's suspension of (l)year shall be counted in his/her playing years in
    the UAAP."

Looking at this rule alone, it seems clear Greg should spend one more year on the sidelines, BUT there are also these rules:

"PERMISSION TO PLAY OUTSIDE THE UAAP
    No athlete and/or team of any UAAP Member University may play for any other entity for the duration of the UAAP tournament in which such athlete/team is/are participating except;
    Exhibition Games
    Barangay Level Tournament
    DECS – CHED Organized competitions
    National Team Selections
Tournament for ranking purposes provided he/she represents his/her UAAP Member University or him/herself
    AFP
    NSA organized tournament
    Alumni organized tournaments."

Smart-Gilas didn't play in the PBA as a pro team, but as a guest team, and it is the SBP-sanctioned National Team, which should make the second set of rules exempt Greg from the previous set. I can't think of any similar cases though, but there are probably a couple in the whole history of the league.

My take: I think this is enough to counter any arguments about Greg's eligibility, so (and believe me this is me TRYING HARD to be objective) I won't be able to understand or appreciate any decision that presents anything otherwise.

So there, based on my research and analysis, there are sufficient grounds for both Ray Parks and Greg Slaughter to be eligible in Season 74.

Norbert already finished the two-year residency (S72-73) after the RP Youth stint (S71).

norbert torres served his time. 3 years pa nga yata nag-residency yung bata.

on parks' case, isa ito sa mga loophole na gagamitin din sa kanya.

neypes and labing-isa were both hs students and are not in the process of establishing residency when they played in the rp youth. so that makes the rule not applicable to them.

common knowledge na nga hindi pa inayos mabuti. kung ang pag-enroll niya sa admu ay para hindi siya mahirapan sa training niya sa smart gilas, hinayaan na lang sana ng admu siya sa smart gilas.

kung gusto naman ng admu na maglaro sa kanila, sana pinag-aralan nila mabuti ang rules. tapos sinabihan si slaughter to drop smart gilas because the rule clearly states that slaughter cannot play on both team simultaneously. that he cannot serve two masters at the same time.

4 pa ang injured. ampotah! lalaban sa international tournament with only 6 healthy players.

apparently, the "greg slaughter rule" is imminent.

^Actually Ateneo has the upperhand since NU will be voting for Slaughter's eligibility since the said ruling will also affect Park's chances. Park also played for the RP team (not Gilas) while doing residency. Since they will want to clear that one up first, they will be voting in favor of Slaughter's eligibility. And since Parks has other eligibility issues to settle Ateneo still has the prerogative to vote for or against Park. This will happen if Slaughter's eligibility is discussed first, if Parks was ruled out first then NU will surely be voting against Slaughter's eligibility.

We can discuss these issues till the world ends and nothing will come of it. The best thing for everyone would be to just wait for whatever decision the Eligibility Committee will come up with. Until then, it's useless and crazy to talk about this matter.
