Kaye Abad on the downside of looking young

CEBU, Philippines - For Kaye Abad, her last drama on television was different and most memorable from her previous projects because she was paired with a much younger actor and surrounded by a cast that was mostly years her junior.

She was quick to add that there was no problem working with the younger set in Angelito ang Batang Ama. She was simply amazed that she can still pull off a character that puts her on the same age bracket with co-stars in their early 20’s. Kaye, known in the public eye and in showbiz circles as the epitome of simplicity, turned the big 3-0 this May. But none would be the wiser just by looking at her.

The age gap not posing any hindrance, Kaye’s real challenge in her last soap was interpreting her role in such a manner that viewers will sympathize with her, even when she was the third party to the relationship of the lead characters.

“In a way, I’m the antagonist, but not the typical one where I’m making life miserable for the lead or I have a mean attitude. I had to act in a way that viewers will not get mad at me kahit nanggugulo ako sa love story nila. I had to show and let viewers understand that I just happened to love the guy, and that I’m not messing up their love story for the sake of it.”

Playing kontravida isn’t something up her preferred alley. She shared it was much harder for her to act all tough, mean or powerful. She’d rather the director ask her to shed buckets of tears, something Kaye can easily do with the snap of a finger. “The afternoon soap Alyna with Shaina Magdayao was where I played the bad one for the first time, at ang hirap. Siguro nahihirapan ako, kasi una, maamo yung mukha ko. Ang hirap ipakita that I’m strong or powerful. I don’t have that confidence in myself, so it’s hard to portray that aura of power and strength.”

One of the pioneer members of Ang TV, Kaye would forever be Eds to John Lloyd Cruz’s Rovic among those who followed the three-year run (1999-2003) of Tabing Ilog, the then Sunday afternoon youth–oriented series ala Dawson’s Creek. While her Tabing Ilog persona being remembered and loved up to this day is a good thing, her eternal teen image has also been a cause for career limitations, according to Kaye.

Her petite features and naturally-youthful looks is an enviable problem for many who go to great vain lengths to preserve their youth, but for the actress in Kaye, this has its drawbacks too.

She explained, “It actually has a positive and negative side. The advantage is, yun nga, mukha pa rin akong bata. I can still do roles that will level me with JM de Guzman and Charee Pineda, and not only mother roles like Dimples [Romana] and Jodi [Sta. Maria] are now able to portray. Sabi ko nga, I hope when I’m 40, ganito pa rin itsura ko. The disadvantage, I also want to be paired with actors my age or close to it like Piolo Pascual or Jericho Rosales. Parang si Angel Locsin, she can be paired with Aga Muhlach or Gabby Concepcion. Pero kung ako, hindi bagay. Kasi nga mukha akong bata, plus, maliit pa ako.”

One other actor she’s eager to be paired with is Coco Martin. This seems to be in the realm of possibility, as the Walang Hanggan dreamboat is a fit for her looks-wise. But — forget Piolo, Jericho or Coco — what she’s really hankering for is an on-screen reunion with John Lloyd!

“We actually have the same Star Magic manager, and I’ve always been requesting that they let us do an MMK episode together. I really miss working with him. Aside from our chemistry, he’s a good actor eh. Ang sarap-sarap magtrabaho at ang dali-dali gumawa ng drama kung yung ka-eksena mo, magaling umarte. Because somehow, may paghuhugutan ka ng emosyon,” said Kaye of the box-office star with whom she also previously shared a real life romance.

While some are of the opinion that she has the potential to make it big, Kaye’s personality is simply in contrast with the usual tactics to achieve superstardom. She shuns controversy, values privacy, doesn’t dress flamboyantly or live extravagantly (when she could very well afford it), and works only because she wants to, not because she needs to.

“I don’t like it when I’m working everyday, that’s why I prefer one TV project at a time. I believe that one show will suffer if I juggle projects. O sige, okay ako today. Tomorrow, okay din ako for another soap. The third day, syempre pagod na ako. Yung mukha ko haggard na. Mukha na akong puyat. Somehow, hindi na ako makaka-arte the right way.”

In this era of liberated females, she’s also one among few remaining traditional Filipinas who believes in a long courtship. Asked for an update with her reported long-time suitor Guji Lorenzana, Kaye said that she is still being wooed. They met on set in 2009, when she made a TV comeback via Precious Hearts Romances Presents: Bud Brothers. “Ganon ako eh. Matagal ako.”

Kaye and Guji’s unplanned yet successful team-up spawned another follow-up, and she’s been back in the saddle since, after a two-year self-imposed hiatus. This is yet again what sets her apart from other stars, those who regard a long absence from the limelight as a death sentence of sorts.

She has been working non-stop since her Ang TV days, so Kaye savored her time-off. “I took a vacation. At first, I said, just one year. But I enjoyed it, so nagtuloy-tuloy na. I enjoyed not receiving a text message of an early call time the next day. I could hang out during evenings. I could make plans to go out because I had free time. If I had work, usual ko sinasabi, sige, I’ll check if may schedule ako next week. Tumagal siya ng mga two years. I just basically hung out with friends. We would watch movies, have coffee, or hang out at home. I don’t go clubbing eh, because I don’t drink. So just a very conservative kind of hanging out.”

Perhaps this is why Kaye possesses the fountain of youth. She doesn’t pressure herself, doesn’t indulge in vices. More importantly, she finds happiness in the simple pleasures of life. (FREEMAN)

Kaye Abad, our favorite Pinay girl-next-door, is going down in FHM history as the cover girl of June 2012. Finally! We thought it would be brilliant to have Kaye donning the most un-Eds-like clothes (or, um, lack thereof) in a familiarly tranquil pastoral scene that reflects her equally calm and collected state of mind.



And so we went to the tranquil pastoral scene, never mind it's three hours away. Never mind that a freaky woman with a rusty itak, who wouldn’t stop smiling at us, inhabited the plot of land in question. And it was also a pretty cool with us to watch our citified shoot crew cope with relentless heat and having to watch for snakes every time we took a piss in the talahib.

But Kaye, there she was, never once complaining about the heat, laughing daintily at our warnings about horse-poo booby traps and itchy grass. In the stressful lead-up to July’s Sexiest, we were able to kick back and enjoy some sunshine with the girl on TV we’d always wanted to get to know more about (and see more of—now here we are).

Perpetually chirpy and cheerful Kaye gets her makeup done. She may be looking very bronze in the photos, but Kaye is actually normally pretty pale-skinned. And very, very makinis.



Off to the first layout Kaye laughs off any pre-shoot jitters. We were in the wilderness and had no problems with crowd control, but we’re sure having to traipse around talahib half-naked can still be pretty taxing on the nerves.



Kaye stays upbeat despite everyone fussing around her and making sure she’s ready for her first-ever FHM appearance. She says she’s nervous as heck but we don’t see any of it in her twinkling eyes.



Flashing one of the first of very many bright and toothy signature Kaye Abad smiles, Kaye disarms the whole crew as she makes her way to the first set-up. Resplendently clad in an all-white get-up, Kaye flashes scintillating glimpses of skin here and there as she walks. We try not to stare.





It wasn’t easy navigating the man-height grass (with eerily unseen creatures rustling through them too) with barely any clothes on to boot but Kaye held up like a pro. Well, she is a pro; she’s been with ABS CBN’s Star Magic ever since and has had her fair share of out of town shoots like this one.



That huge half-tent, half-kite-like structure is a nifty photographer’s tool to diffuse light into our set-up (and did double-duty as a huge-*** sun shield for Kaye as well). That poor guy had to hold down the thing in case it got blown way; but we don’t think he minded because he was a mere few inches away from our cover girl.

Kaye Abad Poses Anew For A Men’s Magazine

MANILA, Philippines – Kaye Abad is set to highlight her assets again via the cover of a popular men’s magazine.

This was confirmed by FHM-Philippines, posting on its official website that the 30-year-old actress will be appearing in their June 2012 issue. Also posted on the site are several behind-the-scenes pictures of the actress’ photo shoot as well as a peek at the prospective cover.

FHM dubbed the actress as “The Girl You Want To Grow Old With.”

Rumors of Abad posing for the magazine have long been circulating, but the actress has kept mum on the possibility.

Not that it’s anything new.

Abad already posed sexy for defunct ABS-CBN publication Maxim-Philippines for its September 2006 issue, to rabid response from the country's male populace.

Abad started her acting career as part of the children's show "Ang TV."

She shot to fame as a tween in the ABS-CBN series “Tabing Ilog,” where she was paired with former real-life sweetheart John Lloyd Cruz.

She went on to form a relationship with singer Chito Miranda of Parokya Ni Edgar for seven long years, which coincided with the decline of her acting career.

They eventually parted in 2010, after which Abad decided to reinvigorate her stalled career.

She went on to intimate her desire to work again with Cruz, who is now known as “The Box-Office King” following several successful films with a variety of young actresses.

Abad was last seen in a support role in the series “Angelito: Batang Ama.”

MANILA, Philippines -- Actress Kaye Abad said she's happy for ex-boyfriend Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda, who is now in a relationship with former Star Circle Quest finalist Neri Naig.

"At least masaya na siya ulit, so masaya din ako. Basta masaya siya ay masaya din ako," Abad said in an interview on Tuesday after a story conference for ABS-CBN's upcoming afternoon series "Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto."

Abad will reprise her role as Jenny in the sequel to "Angelito: Batang Ama," which will also star JM de Guzman and Charee Pineda.

Abad said she and Miranda stayed as good friends after their breakup two years ago.

"Nagte-text siya nagkakamustahan. Nagti-tweet minsan may nire-retweet siya. Sobrang good friends, sobrang okay kami," she said.

The actress added that even after their breakup, she also maintained a good relationship with Miranda's family.

Asked if she already met Naig, Abad said: "Hindi kami close eh. Kumbaga hi and hello, never kaming nagkaroon ng time na magkausap. Kilala ko lang siya before from 'Star Circle Quest.'"

Right now, Abad said she's enjoying being single and going out with some friends.

"Ayaw ko munang i-entertain kasi mahirap. Trabaho muna. Minsan lang 'yung opportunity na ganito bilang, alam niyo naman na tumigil ako dati," Abad said.

John Prats returns to drama in 'Angelito' sequel

MANILA, Philippines -- Actor John Prats is returning to drama in the upcoming afternoon series "Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto."

Prats has become more known for his hosting skills, comic timing and dancing prowess in several ABS-CBN variety and comedy shows.

"Ang last na nagawa kong teleserye ay 'Bud Brothers' under 'Precious Hearts Romance.' Medyo matagal na siguro, mga three years ago. Tapos ito ng 'Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto.' Nakaka-excite na nakakaba," Prats said.

Prats admitted that what makes the project special for him is that he will be working with some of his showbiz friends.

"Si JM (de Guzman) kakilala ko, si Charee nakasama ko sa 'Parekoy,' si Jayson (Gainza) kasama ko sa industriya. So excited ako sa panibagong challenge ng buhay ko," the actor said.

According to Prats, he will be one of the newest characters in the sequel of the hit "Angelito: Ang Batang Ama," which ended its run last April.

"Sa 'Angelito,' ako yung makikilala ni Jenny (Kaye Abad) sa Singapore, 'yung childhood bestfriend niya. Hindi ko nasabi sa kanya ang nararamdaman ko noon at sa Singapore doon ko sasabihin sa kanya na mahal ko siya kahit may anak pa siya sa iba," he said.

"Nakaka-bagets din ang feeling na parang love team ulit. Nakakatuwa lang kasi sanay na akong gumawa ng comedy, hosting, ngayon balik ulit, love team," Prats added.

Aside from "Angelito," Prats is co-hosting "Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 4" and a regular performer on "ASAP" and "Banana Split."

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Kaye Abad has finally agreed to appear on the cover of popular men’s magazine FHM Philippines.

Described by the magazine as “our favorite Pinay girl-next-door,” Abad was shot against a brown field, wearing what looks like a white cape of shredded fabric that barely covers her breasts, paired with a white bikini bottom.

The magazine said the pictorial’s setting is a nod to her popular afternoon series “Tabing Ilog,” which also starred a young John Lloyd Cruz as her leading man.

“We thought it would be brilliant to have Kaye donning the most un-Eds-like clothes (or, um, lack thereof) in a familiarly tranquil pastoral scene that reflects her equally calm and collected state of mind,” the magazine said on its website, referring to Abad’s character Eds in the ABS-CBN teen drama.

The magazine also said Abad proved to be a sport during the shoot, despite the heat.

“There she was, never once complaining about the heat, laughing daintily at our warnings about horse-poo booby traps and itchy grass,” the magazine said.

“She says she’s nervous as heck but we don’t see any of it in her twinkling eyes,” it added.

FHM readers eagerly welcomed the actress’ decision to grace the cover of the magazine for the first time.

“Wow! Dati ‘Tabing Ilog,’ ngayon sarap na dalhin sa tabi ng ilog,” wrote Gerald Gabad on the magazine’s Facebook page.

“Crush ko talaga sya since the ‘Tabing Ilog’ days.. Can't wait to grab this issue,” commented Jeftee Ordillo.

“Finally natupad din *** pangarap at request ko.... ASTIG!” ocampo21 wrote on FHM’s website.

Abad took to Twitter to announce her FHM cover on Tuesday. “Lumabas na po ang June issue ng FHM. Ako po ang cover. Thiz izzit!!!” she said.

“Nakabili na mommy ko. Hahaha! Sana bili din kayo,” she tweeted on Wednesday.

Abad’s celebrity friends also congratulated her for the cover.

Kim Atienza told the actress via Twitter, “Susme ang pic Kaye! Bibili si (Ryan Bang) ng 1,000 copies!”

Ahron Villena tweeted, “Naks FHM! Ikaw na Kaye Abad! Bibili agad ako nyan sa June 1.”

“Bibili ako (Kaye Abad) ‘di dahil kaibigan kita,” Jason Abalos told her via Twitter.

Abad’s former boyfriend Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda apparently also sent a tweet message to the actress, who replied, “Haha! Bukas pa yata lalabas eh. Salamat germs!”

Sa ginanap na presscon ng Angelito: Bagong Yugto, hindi na nakaiwas si Kaye Abad sa mga katanungan tungkol sa kanyang dating boyfriend na si Chito Miranda na ngayon nga ay very open sa kanyang bagong relationship with Neri Naig na dating contestant ng Star Circle Quest. “Okay naman kasi at least masaya na siya ulit so masaya din ako. Basta masaya siya, masaya ako.”

Sa tagal nilang naging magkarelasyon ni Chito, hindi na maikakailang naging malapit na ang kani-kanilang mga pamilya. Dahil bayaw niya si Jay Contreras na vocalist ng bandang Kamikazee (na kasal sa dating child star na si Sarah Jane Abad) na very close kay Chito at sa banda niyang Parokya ni Edgar, natanong ng Push si Kaye kung may mga pagkakataong nagkikita sila o nagkakasama. “Hindi lang yung bayaw ko, pati yung mga pamangkin ko kasi lumaki yung mga pamangkin ko na kapitbahay niya sina Chito. Pilit mang iniwasan ng frontman ng Parokya ni Edgar na si Chito Miranda ang mga tanong tungkol sa kanyang lovelife, hindi naman niya naitanggi na sila na nga ng Star Magic talent na si Neri Naig.

Sa panayam ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) kamakailan, kinumpirma ng music artist na, “Yeah, we’re going out now, girlfriend ko siya. Are we official? I’d like to think official.”

Hindi naman ito lingid sa kaalaman ng dating girlfriend ni Chito na si Kaye Abad.

Ayon sa dalaga, alam niya na may bago nang girlfriend si Chito. Minsan na rin daw niyang nakilala si Neri.

“Hindi kami close. Kumbaga, 'hi, hello' lang. Never kaming nagkaroon ng time na magkausap.

"Kilala ko lang siya from before, ‘yong Star Circle Quest,” nakangiting sabi ni Kaye nang makapanayam siya ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) at iba pang media matapos ang story conference ng Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto noong Martes, May 29.

Nang tanungin kung ano ang naging reaksyon niya nang malaman ito, aniya, “Okay naman kasi at least masaya na siya ulit. so masaya din ako.

"Basta masaya siya, masaya din ako,”

Bagamat naghiwalay na sila, nilinaw ni Kaye na nanatili pa rin ang pagiging magkaibigan nila ng miyembro ng Parokya ni Edgar.

“Nagte-text-an, nagkukumustahan, nagtu-tweet.

"Sobrang good friends. Sobrang okay kami.

"Kahit sa family niya, nagkukumustahan,” sabi ni Kaye.

Bagamat magkaibigan pa rin sila, hindi naman daw nagtatanongsi Kaye tungkol sa personal na buhay ng dating boyfriend.

Aniya, “Kumbaga, sa kanya na ‘yon. Ibibigay ko na sa kanya ‘yon.

“Kung ayaw niyang ikuwento, hindi ko na ipipilit.

“Kung ano ang sine-share niya sa akin, ‘yon na lang ang nakukuha ko.”

STAYING SINGLE. Samantala, kung may bago nang girlfriend si Chito, nananatili namang single si Kaye.

Matatandaan na na-link noon si Kaye sa dating co-star niya sa Precious Hearts Romances na si Guji Lorenzana.

Ilang beses ding umamin si Guji tungkol sa kanyang paghanga sa singer-actress, pero wala namang pag-aming naganap tungkol sa tunay relasyon nilang dalawa.

Sa ngayon, masaya na raw si Kaye sa paglabas-labas kasama ang mga kapamilya at kaibigan.

“Kumbaga, ayaw ko na lang muna i-entertain kasi mahirap.

“Trabaho na lang muna. Minsan lang ang opportunity na ganito bilang alam ninyo na tumigil ako dati," sabi niya.

BIRTHDAY WISH GRANTED. At talagang nasusulit na ngayon ni Kaye ang mga oportunidad sa pag-arte.

Mahigit isang buwan pa lang ang nakalilipas mula nang matapos ang teleseryeng Angelito: Ang Batang Ama, pero muli itong magbabalik sa telebisyon para sa ikalawang yugto.

Katuparan daw ito ng kahilingan ni Kaye noong kaarawan niya kamakailan.

Sabi niya, “Birthday wish ko na kung anuman ang magiging next show ko, sana kasama ko ulit ‘yong same [people].

“Ito, literal na same group, kasama lahat. Masaya at excited kasi may mga bagong characters at saka mga bagong plot.”

JOHN PRATS. Isa sa mga kinapananabikan ni Kaye sa bagong yugto ng Angelito ay ang pagiging magkapareha nila ni John Prats.

“Tumutodo na talaga ako, e. Todo na talaga ito, wala nang isasagad pa!” natatawang komento ng 30-year-old actress sa muling pakikipag-loveteam niya.

Pabiro pa niyang dagdag, “Kapag inabot ko si Zaijian [Jaranilla], abangan n’yo ‘yan, magpapamisa ako.’

"Ten years old si Zaijian ngayon, bigyan natin ng mga five years, puwede na ‘yan.”

Sa seryosong tono, aniya, “Kay John, actually, excited ako kasi ang tagal ko nang kakilala, Ang TV pa lang.

“Noong sinabi sa akin na si John, na-excite ako kasi ‘yong batuhan namin ni JM [de Guzman] dito, di ba, natural at parang magkaibigan talaga?

“Kay John, bilang matagal na kaming magkakilala, na-excite ako kung paano lalabas ‘yong chemistry, ‘yong friendship naming dalawa.”

Pero kahit matagal nang magkakilala sina John at Kaye, challenge pa rin daw para sa aktres ang kanilang tambalan.

“Kinabahan ako sa part na kung loveteam, may kissing scene.

“Bilang sabi ko nga ay 1994 pa lang kami magkilala, nasubaybayan ko na si John hanggang sa magka-girlfriend at lahat.
