    Review: The Hunger Games

I was not even aware of its book until last year when news erupted about its film adaptation. Suzanne Collins, author of the book wrote the screenplay of the film along with director Gary Ross and Billy Ray. There are likely many who have not read the book and do not know their Panems and Districts. Panem is the name of the nation that has risen from the ruins of once then North America. The people from its 12 Districts are subject to select one boy and one girl to participate in the annual ‘Hunger Games’ taking part in a battle where there is only one participant who will emerge as the winner. The Hunger Games is a televised reality show complete with sponsors and commentaries. This, according to the ‘Capitol’ leaders serves as a reminder of the people’s failed uprising against them that happened decades ago.

The film let us in to the colorful universe of Panem and its poor twelve districts. It features the central female protagonist Katniss Everdeen, played by Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence who yet again delivered another beautiful performance similar to her lead stint in Winter’s Bone. Katniss is the caretaker of her sister Primrose whom she promised to protect no matter what and her widowed mother who is too depressed to do anything. She is a skilled hunter who uses her skills to feed her starving family.

When Primrose name was selected in her first year of eligibility to the game, Katniss stepped up for her sister and volunteer as a tribute. The baker Peeta Mellark was the boy chosen for their district. Both were brought to the Capitol, went through make-overs and a bit of training and eventually were brought to the battleground where violence soon claimed the lives of those who are participating in the game.

The film is almost three hours and you won’t even feel that it was that long because there’ just so much in it. It was never boring and the story itself is way engaging that you’d really feel the characters, like she / he are representing your district. The cast ensemble is impeccable. Everyone seemed to really play his or her part really well. My favorite characters in this film would have to be Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), the mistress of ceremonies during the reaping for District 12 and Rue (Amandla Stenberg) from District 11. Her death was very heartbreaking that I can’t help but tear up a little. Jennifer Lawrence whose vulnerability and pain as she portrayed Katniss was the ultimate torch that carry the film altogether. Gary Ross made some very interesting visuals in the film that contradicts the darkness of its main theme’s premise. There is no hesitation nor inhibition about the brutality of the game and the screenplay is just in its perfect state. The only criticism I may have about this film would have to be the development of Katniss and Peeta’s love story.

Overall, the film is as beautiful as its book but what the movie delivered is a world that captured the essence of its source into an effortless and magnificent cinematic experience.

and with that, may the odds be ever in your favor.

    The Hunger Games (2012)

    Action | Drama | Sci-Fi

I haven't read yet Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games, the phenomenally popular young adult trilogy that instigated a cult following, and is now a crazily talked-about motion picture from Lionsgate.

The story is actually just another version of a common dystopian theme previously seen in films, novel-based or otherwise: a group of people who, against their own will, are locked in a fighting arena to kill each other off for one victor to emerge. Kill to survive. With two core objectives: control and entertainment.

So, what does The Hunger Games's version offer?

It's some time in a dystopian future, in post-apocalyptic North America now called Panem, a nation divided into 12 districts governed by the city of Capitol, the seat of a totalitarian government. Every year, the Capitol holds for its rich and couture-wearing dwellers a reality game show-- like a combination of America's Next Top Model and Survivor: The Hunger Games. The contestants or "tributes" are pairs of boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18, "reaped" or randomly chosen from each district to kill each other off (after some fashion makeover) in a televised domed arena in Capitol. Our heroine, 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence), hails from the poorest district, 12, and volunteers as a tribute in place of her "reaped" younger sister.

Unable to finish the similarly themed Battle Royale due to its sick and graphic violence on children, I was a bit apprehensive to see The Hunger Games, but then found some assurance because of its PG-13 rating. Directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit), the movie's violence is "family friendly," the act of killing quick, edited to a blur, so that the violence is not your primary source of art and entertainment but is clearly only a subtext to portray a courageous heroine in an oppressed society. The film is more of an adolescent adventure story rather than that of a grim and violent disturbing nature.

Jennifer Lawrence was perfectly cast as the bow-and-arrow-toting Katniss, which quickly recalls her hard-bitten, impoverished and fearless character in 2010's Winter's Bone where she got nominated Oscar Best Actress; the same determined and indomitable spirit of her character is also transparent in her somber and matured countenance in this movie. Lawrence, indeed, has the power to captivate you, and it is clear that her strong onscreen presence contributed largely to the movie's engaging factor.

The Hunger Games provides a solid storytelling, consistently bleak despite the colorful, showbiz-happy Capitol. The suspense and tension, though, is minimal, mostly because Ross eliminated almost all the violence, leaving only a faint sense of threat to the protagonist. The lack of terror, especially when you know that the heroine will survive, has made some parts a bit boring; however, the smooth flow of the screenplay and its fast-paced and unpredictable moments will carry you to its triumphant ending.

The cinematography is fairly visually pleasing. The first few minutes of the film, though, uses an almost dizzying shaky-cam treatment to project the tension and the terrifying fate of the children on Reaping Day, in a stark and almost archaic atmosphere of District 12, but then eventually normalizes towards the artfully modern Capitol City.

The Hunger Games, with a good cast (including Stanley Tucci and Woody Harrelson) may not be as mind-blowing to me as the fans hyped it up to be-- but it surely stands out among similarly themed stories. Despite the violent premise (and a common one at that), the story has a heart. Most notably, the film has managed to successfully put on a pedestal an extraordinary heroine, who is not only an admirable young woman still strongly in touch with humanity and morals, but is also a symbol of hope and change in a seemingly hopeless situation. The Hunger Games will not feed your violent fetish, no-- but it's a kid-friendly, interesting, smart, and entertaining social commentary of a not-so-distant world.

Still worth the movie ticket and might encourage you to read the book.

Also starring Josh Hutcherson, Lenny Kravitz, and Elizabeth Banks.

    Review: The Muppets

I’ve been waiting for the local release of The Muppets ever since I first heard snippets of their showstopping number “Life’s a Happy Song” late last year and boy it really took awhile for this movie to finally get here. But the long wait was worth it as The Muppets is a joy to watch on the big screen as it will make you sing, dance, laugh and cry all at the same time.

Gary (Jason Segel) takes his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) to Los Angeles to celebrate their anniversary however he tags along his brother Walter so he can also visit the Muppets studios. Once they get there, they discovered that the studio is closing down as business tycoon Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) plans to destroy the entire studio for oil drilling. The group informs the almost-retired Kermit the Frog of the situation and they soon went on a mission to assemble the old crew to perform a Muppets Telethon to save the studio.

The story is definitely in line with the Muppets tradition of deliberate silliness and heightened reality (a muppet and a human as brothers?) but it doesn’t matter anyway as it is charismatic enough to make it work. What’s amazing though is that underneath the meta jokes and goofball gags lies a story about mourning the world that moved on without you and the uncertainty on returning to a place you once loved. The movie poses the question “Has the world become too cynical for The Muppets?” and The Muppets in its own absurd way examined this ordeal vividly and would actually make you evaluate how we often dismiss the value of things in the past just because they are passé.

The Muppets openly pulls in your nostalgic heartstrings but it does not feel manipulative because there’s genuine passion and affection poured into the production. The musical number “Pictures in My Head” featuring Kermit the Frog reminiscing the good ol’ days of "The Muppets Show" is a poignant scene that embodies how this film is not just a throwaway project to cash in on an established brand name. When the "The Muppets Show" telethon begun I had goosebumps upon seeing the opening sequence. I actually don’t recall if I ever watched an actual "The Muppets Show" episode on television before (or maybe I was just too young to remember) but the opening sequence felt so familiar, it’s like welcoming an old friend back.

The music definitely elevated the movie even more thanks to Bret McKenzie (of Flight of the Conchords fame) who did a terrific job. It’s actually brilliant that they got McKenzie to do the job as his wit and sensibilities match the movie’s bizarrely sweet tone. The Oscar-winning song “Man or a Muppet” proves why McKenzie was the perfect choice. Adams and Segel are just supporting characters but these actors have the perfect personalities to complement the movie’s atmosphere. And while Cooper didn’t add that much to his one-dimensional villain character just seeing him rap is worth the admission. There are a lot of celebrity cameos in the movie but the one that involves Jim Parsons was the crowd favorite.

It’s unfortunate that after the long wait The Muppets has to open the same week as the highly-anticipated "The Hunger Games". I’m afraid there won’t be a lot of people interested enough to see this movie, which is a shame because The Muppets delivers unadulterated entertainment, and most importantly optimism that you don’t often see in movies these days that often favors the jaded. This not just a comeback vehicle for these lovable puppets but a loving tribute that would make its creator Jim Henson proud.

    Wrath of the Titans (2012)

    Action | Adventure | Fantasy

The sequel to 2010's Clash of the Titans, Wrath of the Titans (watch the trailer) takes Perseus (Sam Worthington), demigod, hero and Kraken killer, in another save-the-world adventure.

Ten years after famously defeating the monster Kraken, Perseus's quiet fisherman life with his 10-year-old son Helius is disrupted when a division broke between the triumvirate gods: his father Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Poseidon (Danny Huston) versus Hades (Ralph Fiennes). Hades takes with him a minion, Ares (Zeus's jealous son filled with daddy issues), to switch to the enemy camp: the imprisoned Titans, led by the triumvirate's imprisoned daddy, the lava Titan monster Kronos. Perseus, our reluctant hero-demigod, is suddenly forced to rescue his father Zeus from the Underworld to prevent the Titans and their dangerously growing power from destroying the gods...and humanity.

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), Wrath of the Titans brings to life our beloved Greek mythology in a smooth, clear, and unpretentious screenplay. Liebesman and writers do not go dilly-dallying and immediately throw the viewers into the mythical drama, giving us a sense of brewing tension early into the film. Wrath is an engaging throwback to the ancient, mythical times, triggering our fascination for mythical gods and supernatural powers. Watching it on 3D-IMAX (with a cool pair of gigantic 3D headband-glasses kind to bespectacled moviegoers like me), makes everything feel more authentic; the wind against the powerful flap of Pegasus's wings, human/god feet crunching against gravel, and the frightening, elaborate abyss of the Underworld make you feel as if you're right there with the gods, demigods, and monsters, feeling their wounds, sweat, and rage.

It was perfect to see a glorious cast, the deep-voiced gods of Hollywood themselves: Fiennes leaves no traces of Voldemort in him but he completely becomes Hades in our eyes, calm and dark, resentful and threatening; Neeson exudes the kindly, powerful Zeus vibe. Poseidon's demigod kid, Agenor, was aptly played by the almost unknown Toby Kebbel, delivering his humorous lines with that subtle, deadpan style of a confident stand-up comedian. Bill Nighy as the blacksmith god Hephaestus also evoked chuckles from the audience. The only problem is Sam Worthington, the star. Although a credible actor, Worthington looks so dull. With the combination of Perseus's lack of personality and Worthington's uber darn plain face, you cannot feel the slightest bit of thrill watching him in his heroic acts.

Overall, though, the visually pleasant Wrath of the Titans is a fast-paced movie that will suck you right into the fascinating world of Greek mythology. It may not be high-octane edge-of-seat action adventure, but the movie has depth, without that produced-for-3D-profit feel...and it's an engaging, just, and sincere tribute to a great and rich mythology.

*3D-IMAX is highly recommended for a more profound sense of ancient drama and adventure.

    Review: Titanic 3D

Titanic was not just a movie but a massive pop culture event. It was so huge that it was inevitable that it will receive a lot of backlash soon after. But 14 years has passed since Titanic made a huge splash in the worldwide box office and with the 100th anniversary of Titanic setting sail on April 10 and the consequent tragedy that followed on April 15, now is a great time to revisit one of the most unforgettable movies of all time via Titanic 3D.

I’m sure you’re already familiar with the story but to give you a refresher, Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) are passengers from different walks of life who meet and fall in love on the ill-fated steam ship. The film won a record-tying 11 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director for James Cameron. It became the highest-grossing movie of all time, making a $1.8 billion worldwide, a record it kept until Cameron’s very own Avatar beat it in 2010. In the Philippines, the movie earned $4.8 million in 1998, which would likely translate around 150-180 million pesos, also a record setter back in the day especially for a movie that ran for over 3 hours.

Titanic returns to theaters on April 7 and now with the added 3D effect. The 3D conversion is technically polished which you would expect from someone as detail-oriented as Cameron. I like the shots that involve water as it brought more life to those moments especially the underwater scenes in which the 3D was effectively utilized. What I like the most about the 3D conversion in the movie is that it was not headache-inducing as the other 3D movies have been and the quality of the images remained solid and most importantly not darker.

This was my first time to see Titanic in a theater as during its initial release I was too young to see it (my parents thought I couldn’t handle such a long movie with frightening images). I saw the movie only once on VHS and some parts of it during one of its many TV telecasts. But I haven’t seen the movie for almost a decade until today. And I’m amazed how the movie held up over time and that seeing it again was such a wonderful moviegoing experience. Some people say that the love story between Rose and Jack is too cheesy but the chemistry between Winslet and DiCaprio is so intense and passionate that you really just can’t help but fall for it. One of my realizations upon seeing this movie again was the strong performance of the late Gloria Stuart as the older Kate. I didn’t notice her performance back then but now I appreciate how emotionally affecting her scenes were.

I still had goosebumps when the ship started sinking. I was overwhelmed during those scenes and I can definitely say that those sequences are best seen and experience on the big screen. The sheer difficulty of what Cameron and his team pulled off during those scenes is simply remarkable and is worth watching over and over again. Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” was so overplayed that every time I listen to the radio and the song is on I change the stations immediately but hearing it again as the credits roll on made me appreciate how strong the song is in the context of the film. Likewise, listening to the score on a good theater sound system made me understand how integral the score of this movie is as it sets the mood and will make you feel how epic this film truly is.

Much has been said about the success of Titanic but all I can say that the film is timeless. It remains as one of the most universally appealing film of our generation. If you haven’t seen the movie in a theater then go see it because it really is different watching this movie on a large screen format. The same can be said to those people who’ve already seen it before (and perhaps multiple times), and while the movie is easily accessible, nothing can compare to the experience of watching it in a theater. The added 3D effect is good and probably the best output a conversion of a movie can see. Ultimately though it didn’t really add that much overall to the movie as Titanic is strong enough on its own that even without the added 3D effect, it is still worth revisiting on the big screen.

    Rating: 10 / 10
Cast: Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gloria Stuart, Kathy Bates, Bill Paxton, Victor Garber

    Titanic 3D (2012)

    Adventure | Drama | History

The plot that film snobs (and those who have never given Titanic a chance) scoff at: Poor boy meets rich girl. On-board a luxurious and gigantic ship on its maiden voyage destined to sink. Celine Dion singing the theme song. Pretty sunsets. Heartthrob of the '90s Leonardo DiCaprio yelling, "I'm the king of the world! Wohooo!" A love story so cliche it hurts.

But why did 95 percent of the world fall in love with Titanic when it premiered in 1997? And people never asking "Have you seen Titanic?" but "How many times have you seen Titanic?" And why is it that, today, it is still one of our most favorite movies of all time?

It's the way director James Cameron told the story.

Fifteen years later, re-released in 3D on the big screen to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the sailing of the RMS Titanic on April 10th, you ask, How is the movie different today on the big screen? And in 3D? Do not expect to feel as if you're drowning, nor expect to duck when Grandma Rose throws into the bottomless sea the "Heart of the Ocean" with a small yelp. But the movie was cleanly converted into 3D, clear and crisp. You can almost wade through the icy, bottomless Pacific Ocean, Jack (DiCaprio) or Rose's (Kate Winslet) face so close to you, and you can almost touch the handrails of the ship as it tilts to its horrific fate.

The 3D has minimal effect, but it doesn't bother you because it's the power of the story that will once again sweep you off your feet. Yes, Titanic is still perfect. It doesn't matter if you now realize how cheesy all the lines are that you find yourself chuckling inside the movie house. But no matter how corny the lines are, they are the lines that you know by heart and are fond of. And besides, the movie's beauty is not in the words, but in the story itself. Cameron may not be a writer, but he's a darn good visual storyteller.

Watching it again on the big screen more than a decade later, you realize once again why this movie has earned a deep spot in your heart and why it bagged 11 Oscar awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Cameron used a fantastic real-life tragedy as backdrop of a simple love story. He chose the kind of musical score where a single note already evokes a multitude of emotions, intensifying the story's sense of drama, romance, and tragedy. And he inserted the music in appropriate scenes, the timing so perfect that you are rendered speechless or in tears. Cameron's genius clearly lies in his precision; he is a master manipulator of emotions, gifted with the tools to dictate our emotions through a motion picture.

Titanic was and still is a cinematic masterpiece. Fifteen years later, you will find yourself still rooting for the underdog (DiCaprio), still amazed and heartbroken by the forensic analysis of the tragedy, still wiping away tears as Jack kisses Rose while scolding her in a cracked voice, "You're so stupid, Rose! Why'd you do that? Huh? You're so stupid!" and still watching with shocked silence as the Titanic sinks with a heartbreaking and frightening knowledge that it happened in real life... more than a thousand souls drowning and freezing in the Pacific Ocean.

Yes, the magic is still there.

Are you ready to go back to Titanic?

Watch this 2012 trailer and tell me if you're not yet convinced to see it on the big screen for the nth time...and for the first time in 3D:

    Titanic 3D: Review

The second highest grossing film of all time, bagging 11 Oscar awards including best picture and one of the best romantic movie in history sails the big screen one more time.

Titanic is one of the most famous movie ever so we should skip the summary. We proceed to the 3D conversion of the film. The 3D effects was barely felt, there are times when I removed my 3D glasses and I can still watch the movie perfectly. But even a pointless 3D conversion Titanic 100 year anniversary re-release was epic. Experiencing the film in the big screen was fantastic and it's worth watching. One of the best love story ever told with such remarkable actors and characters that many have missed. It's a long time ago since we first saw this movie on VHS and the feeling was still the same. Recalling the quotes and the lines that tattooed on our minds simply enchanted our hearts.

It's a perfect re-release it's not disastrous but it's better if they just re-released it in 2D. It's perfect to reminisce the love story between Jack and Rose. Expect another exhilarating atmosphere while the ship sinks in the icy water.

Overall we still recommend the film specially to those who did not watched the movie on the cinemas. It's one of the finest movie ever.

    Battleship (2012): Movie Review

We entered the cinema without expecting an awesome movie as the trailer did not convinced us to get excited to see it, but definitely the movie rocked the big screen from start to finish.

Five alien spacecrafts enters the earth landing in the sea where an international naval war game was held. Three ships were ordered to investigate the location where they landed. Soon they learned that the visitors were aliens then quickly sinks two ships, leaving one under the command of Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitch) who has been a headache in the force since day one. With a huge force field isolating them from other ships its up to Hopper and his crew to find a way to save the world from the alien invaders.

Actually there is nothing new about the overused alien invasion storyline but Battleship obviously took a huge step in making it a one of a hell movie. The effects were tremendously good from the battleships to the alien aircraft to the alien invaders that looked like characters from the game Front Mission 3. A nice set of cast provided an outstanding performance making the audience feel that were also in danger and the world depends on their hands. Another positive bit for this movie is the ending which is on a positive note unlike other films that will leave you hanging or drastically annoy you after. A good start for Battleship that ends into a spectacular finale. Full blast on the action scenes and a good mix up of humor at the side of it.

Taylor Kitch is such a revelation whether you like him or not he would stay put and make more movies. Just too bad that Liam Neeson was pushed back into a supporting role (Damn, we would like to see Liam Neeson kick an extra terrestrial ***). While Rihanna stepped up leaving a mark that she can also act specially in a bad *** soldier outfit. A lot of likable characters that you would start to care and cheer for.

Overall, Battleship gave a lot of tension, fun, excitement and awesomeness in an over two hour movie. We recommend this movie to everyone who wants to see a extravagant clash between aliens and humans.

Machine Gun Preacher (2011): Movie Review

Machine Gun Preacher" is the inspirational true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children. Gerard Butler as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster's ("Monster's Ball," "Finding Neverland") moving story of violence and redemption.

Don't expect cold blooded action movie as what the title says while Gerard Butler is holding a gun in the poster. It's about the real life story of Sam Childers who leaves his dark past and embraces the word of God. Finding his time in a civil war-torn Sudan leaving his family behind back home at Pensylvania. Witnessing the children suffer from the war made hm to dedicate his time by building an orphanage for the kids.

Gerard Butler did a nice acting job as Sam Childers who is emotionally inflicted by the effects of war. He shows a great portrayal emotionally, physically and mentally. With a nice supporting cast that shows a picture of reality in African countries, your heart will start to care and be thankful on the things we have here and to realize that we are lucky enough in our country.

Overall it's an inspiring movie with a real person dedicating his life even forgetting his family for the sake of other people. This shows a great story behind a man who really care.

    Review: The Avengers (2012)

I’ve actually been thinking if this film would live up to its promise of assembling a group of superheroes and making it work at the big screen. After all, some of them haven’t had any film solely dedicated to them and their heroism although we see them every now and then popping up in some scenes from the previous Marvel films, we still don’t know them “personally.”

The Avengers tells the story of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Coulson ( Clark Gregg) assembling a group of superheroes (rather gifted and talented creatures) which they have been doing for the past five years to form a military force known as the Avengers Initiative. There we see Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) being joined by Fury and Coulson themselves, Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to fight for humanity.

In this film, we see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) leaving Asgard to invade Earth as its king and enslave humanity including his brother Thor. It’s funny because Loki’s much more interesting now than his less-compelling antagonistic take in Thor. Somehow, it enriches his character as well as Thor himself which I thought was the weakest prior to this film – performance wise.

There may be some weak moments in the film, which are stereotypical with the genre – good versus evil, but there are far enough moments that I can truly say that The Avengers really is the best film in the Marvel series. It has stunning action sequences, great climax building and the characters establishment was superb! I thought the banter between Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Steve Rogers (Captain America) was good and carry the film all throughout. And with the occasional hilarity of the Hulk’s character – I thought it was effortless.

Althought I’m not exactly a fan of the series, I am still excited for the sequel which I think we will be getting after this. The Avengers took on some cultural icons and made them even more appealing than they already are. The anticipation for this film was worth the entire wait and the expectation which I think is pretty high was nevertheless a success.

    The Avengers: Movie Review (2012)

The long wait is over as The Avengers finally rocked the big screen. The idea is ambitious putting a lot of big stars and superheroes in one movie. It is a big gamble but making this possible is like a dream come true to all comic book lovers, kids and movie addicts.

With the world being threatened by war plotted by the evil brother of Thor, Loki. Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) brings together a group of superheroes who can help to save the world in total annihilation. The team consists of super soldier Steve Rogers also known as Captain America (Chris Evans) ,the playboy chick magnet billionaire Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), The demi-god of thunder Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The brilliant scientist Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the sharpshooter Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and the sexy assassin Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). And together they are called the Avengers.

A lot of questions was lurking in my mind before watching this movie like who will emerge as the lead superhero as most of them have been solo leads in their own film? Will they have enough screen time and enjoy the battles with all of them with only one main enemy? Well the answer is yes, putting all of them is one of a kind non stop action superhero movie. Imagine seven comic book heroes all together fighting to save the world was insane and freaking awesome

The good thing about this is before they teamed up they also had altercations with each other resulting to hero vs hero battle scenes that you'll enjoy. There are also some hilarious moments that made us laugh hard inside the cinema so you better watch it because were not giving out some spoilers. All of the characters were significant as all of them played a big role and performed brilliantly. Really well made film as you cannot ask for more aside from a sequel. Just one tip stay in your seats after the movie and wait for the post credit scene. It's funny how kids reacted after the movie outside the cinema posing like their favorite avenger making me reminisce my childhood days.

Overall The Avengers is a must watch movie as it really brought out the best, squeezing so much action, fun and excitement in a two and a half hour running time. No bathroom breaks and no cellular phones as every second counts in this film.

    American Reunion (2012): Movie Review

First we would like to congratulate Pinoy Exchange for a successful advance screening last night at Greenbelt 3 cinemas and thank you for the tickets of American Reunion.

All the American Pie characters are back and they are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. The friends reunites for another weekend of fun, laughter and R-comedy all over again. Married couple Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) already have a kid and having a hard time to be alone to spend for their romantic pleasures, while Oz is now a TV sportscaster currently dating a hot model chick. Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) a married man who still has feeling to her former girlfriend, Vicky (Tara Reid) while Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is now a mysterious drifter and Stifler (Sean William Scott) who pretty much haven't changed at all still attended the Reunion even his close friends didn't invited him.

I remember watching all American Pie movies with three as big-screen releases and some straight to DVD's flick been a big fan of this series. The nasty R-jokes never get tired as it still got the same formula. Of course the nudity, masturbation jokes and wicked pranks still rocks. The story was good bringing the old casts is superb while adding other characters to spice it up. Jim's Dad was totally the scene stealer with Stifler's mom who really made the crowd burst their laughter in their seats. Well written script such a great way to enjoy it with your friends as a stress reliever movie

Overall American Reunion reminisced the old school R-18 flicks that you used to sneak out from your mom and watch it alone. Can't say it's better than the original but still provided a lot of good laughs all throughout the movie. If your a fan of the series better watch this as you can easily relate to some of the jokes specially the past between Stifler and Finch. This movie is definitely worth of your time and money, It surely the last best slice of the pie series.

    American Pie: Reunion (2012)

    Comedy

In 1999, the world got a taste of American Pie. Jason Biggs will forever be stamped in our minds not only as the younger version of Adam Sandler but as the horny boy who had sex with an apple pie and became an Internet sensation.

American Pie creator Adam Herz contributed to pop culture and cinema a brand of mainstream teen comedy that crushed the barriers of censorship, modesty, and subtlety-- he nosedived into a shameless sex comedy in all its teenage awkwardness. He laid it out point-blank to your face: American Pie is a sexy, hormonally charged gross fun, meant to turn your eyes away awkwardly, make your jaw drop and make you feel uncomfortable, while keeping a steady stream of humor, inducing the occasional riotous outburst.

    Men or boys?

I was a teenager myself in 1999 when American Pie landed on my face in all its gross and sticky, humorous situations. It may not be the best comedy ever but its success is that it's unforgettable. The cast will eternally be associated with the movie: Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Tara Reid, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Alyson Hannigan and her "one time, at band camp..." line, Natasha Lyonne, Eugene Levy, Eddie Kaye Thomas-- and Sean William Scott will forever be Stifler in our minds and Jennifer Coolidge as Stifler's mom.

Who could ever forget Stifler's mom?

Thirteen years later, and after two sequels and a series of direct-to-video spin-offs, comes the fourth theatrical release: American Pie: Reunion. Married couple Jim Levenstein (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Flannigan) are already with a son, and the rest have their own adult lives-- except for Stifler, who hasn't moved on from high school. The men take a trip back to their hometown in Michigan for their thirteenth high school reunion and, of course, find themselves once again in sticky situations in all its R-18 dirty and sexual humor.

Directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar) and also penned by them along with Herz, American Pie: Reunion feels like catching up with old friends, completing that nostalgic feeling with 1990's music. The movie is a stroll down memory lane, yet keeping the American Pie humor intact. The movie brings fresh, sexy, and gross humor, while reviving some favorite lines and moments from the first movie-- some bordering a bit on corny comeback, but most are thankfully not forced. The tricky part for any sequel of a big movie is how you will reintroduce the beloved characters, and Reunion has managed to squeeze them into the picture in unpredictable moments so that you will delight in their appearance.

Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan return to their roles as Jim and Michelle.

The movie is fast-paced, only with a light conflict and storyline since its goal, anyway, is to make the main guys shine: Jim, Kevin, Oz, Finch, and Stifler (Sean William Scott is effectively hilarious and offensive) and bring forth its trademark of juvenile and sexual humor. The movie house was never quiet during the entire screening-- we were all skipping between chuckles and hysterical laughter, cries of pure disgust and laughter, and sentimental aawwsss.

American Pie: Reunion, produced by Jason Biggs and Sean William Scott, has managed to resuscitate what has made the original American Pie an unforgettably disgusting and generally funny experience, incorporating twists that will delight those who've seen the original American Pie.

    A reunion indeed.

    8 out of 10 stars

You might want to grab a slice of nostalgic comedy while its still warm in selected cinemas beginning May 2, 2012.

Rated R-18 for crude and explicit sexual content, nudity and language.

    Dark Shadows (2012)

    DARK SHADOWS (2012)

    Comedy | Fantasy

Hell has no fury like a woman scorned.

It's 1752 and wealthy playboy and dark magic enthusiast Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) of Collinsport, Maine, breaks the heart of Angelique (Eva Green) when he chooses Josette (Bella Heathcote), his true love, over her. But too bad for Barnabas, the devastated Angelique happens to be a witch, and Barnabas receives the full effect of her wrath of unrequited love: not only with a family curse, but with eternal suffering—turning Barnabas into a vampire and then burying him alive. Almost two centuries later, in 1972, Barnabas is accidentally released from his coffin. Time-warped and culture-shocked, Barnabas returns to the Collinswood Manor, stays with the cursed and dysfunctional Collins family, his descendants, and becomes determined to redeem the Collins family name.

But Barnabas is in for a surprise when the past returns to haunt him.

Based on the 1966-1970 television series of the same name, Tim Burton's Dark Shadows is a gothic fantasy comedy that can very well elicit a lot of laughs. Johnny Depp playing the British-accented, old-fashioned Barnabas is a huge delight to watch, delivering the humorous, poetic, and lyrical lines of his character perfectly, his performance intensifying the comical character of Barnabas. With the combination of his innocent and deadpan look and the flowery Old English that comes out of his mouth, it's most of the time a riot.

The first half of the movie is clearly inspired and playful, engaging you in the charming 1970's pop culture, frequently making you laugh with the presence of a hilariously clueless and eloquent vampire, mesmerizing you in Tim Burton's trademark of a dreamy and magical gothic world, complete with Oscar-winner Colleen Atwood's breathtakingly gorgeous costumes. However, the narrative is a bit loose, with characters forgotten from time to time and some significant aspects of the story left out or unexplained. Still the film moves along just fine—absorbing, funny, and entertaining—but! when the climax arrives, the movie makes a 360-degree turn and becomes messy, forced, and boring...leaving you with a disappointing and unsatisfying feeling in the end.

Overall, Dark Shadows shines because of Depp's Barnabas and his witty, poetic dialogue, Burton's dreamy world, and Atwood's painfully beautiful and inspired costume-designing that seriously deserves another Oscar. The entire cast, including the elegant and graceful Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins and Eva Green as Angelique the Witch, gives justice to their unique characters. The story, though, feels just like it's original source: a light soap opera that is a delight to watch in weekday afternoons, yet with an amazing production design. Too bad, the movie would have been a wholly delightful experience if not for the weak and messy climax.

Dark Shadows is worth the watch, though—not only for the visually pleasing experience, but most of all, Johnny Depp as Barnabas is just too cute and hilarious to miss.

The Cabin in the Woods: Movie Review

The Cabin in the Woods indeed sells a one of a kind horror movie like no other. The critics graded it so well that we would love to watch it all over again. A long wait was not wasted thanks to Lionsgate for releasing this on theaters as it was shelved for so long.

Five friends decided to spend a weekend in a remote cabin in the woods. There they discovered a cellar filled with mysterious objects. What they doesn't know that each of the items below lies each mysterious evil within it. Soon evil was unleashed with each of them fighting to survive against some demonic zombie creatures. But as time passes they learned a much deeper unimaginable secret that will totally freak the living hell out of them.

The Cabin in the Woods reinvented horror movies because the idea was brilliantly made, I just don't want to spill out some spoilers so better to see it yourself. It was cleverly done as it was plainly remarkable specially when the secrets were revealed. It was just awesome to see all horror cliche you can ever think to be included in one horror movie. The excitement was extremely felt though the film was cut badly as some of the gore scenes was removed to catch up the R-13 grade. Other than that the film still retained the excitement it offered the audiences making us grip on the edge of our seats. The crazy scenarios and story line that will surely twist up your mind

The actors was fun with Chris Hemsworth leading the charge with each of them having different characteristics usually present in a slasher film. The sexy girl, the good girl, the cocky guy, the decent guy, the geeky stoned guy that usually jumps out of somewhere when you already thought he was dead. They were pretty good enough making us feel that we are watching a reality TV series.

Overall the movie attempted a risky move that definitely paid off. It's like The Avengers which a lot of evil imaginative creatures that lurks in the night ended up in one movie.

Review: What To Expect When You're Expecting (2012)

This film is an adaptation of the bestselling pregnancy book by Heidi Murkoff, which stars Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison and Dennis Quaid amongst others. The film follows each character experiencing life changing moments while expecting the miracle that is the birth of a child.

Going in to see the film, I was initially turned off by the film’s star-studded ensemble because it reminds me so much of Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve – I didn’t even know the story to begin with but the fact that there’s a swarm of characters in the film, I’m almost expecting that it’s going to be another one of those all-stars train wreck films

I’ve to be honest. I already expected this to be a lousy film but I was wrong. I’ll be the first one to admit that I did enjoy it! There’s no fresh take on its story line. There’s the same old story that you hear every now and then about getting pregnant, adopting, the pregnancy scare and all but each minute details of the characters involved are somehow very affecting. You’d actually fall in love with them! It has the usual corny punch lines thrown here and there, the black token guy, the dumb blonde and the usual characters but somehow it all worked together.

Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Banks are just flawless in this film. They are the characters that you would remember from the film after the credits rolled in (unless you’re glued to Rodrigo Santoro and Joe Manganiello all throughout.) They’re relatable and very charming. Forget that Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz are also in here because they are in the film for their star value. It also doesn’t hurt that the film has a great soundtrack.

The film obviously is very heartwarming, though, cliché – it has the power to evoke that feminine side from you even when you’re not “expecting” and regardless of your gender. I have not read the book from where it’s based and I don’t have any plan to but I think the mere merit of the film’s considerable approach to pregnancy, family and just life in general is reason enough to go to the cinema and watch it.

Review: Men in Black 3 (2012)

“Men in Black 3” comes 15 years after its original installment and 10 years after its sequel where nobody ever expected to get a follow up after. I, for one did not. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant reminder that Will Smith is still very much alive to do movies.

This third film based on Lowell Cunningham's comic series had Agent J (Will Smith) travels back to 1969 where he met the younger Agent K (played this time by Josh Brolin.) His mission is to stop the alien criminal Boris from assassinating the young Agent K that would change the course of history.

I am not a fan of the franchise but I remember enjoying the first two films somehow. I just loved the dynamics between Smith and Jones in the previous installments. This time though, Smith does not have a lot of sequences with Jones, which is a shame because they really have a great chemistry. Brolin isn't a bad replacement though; he's pretty quick and spot-on as the younger Agent K.

Another problem I have was the establishment of Agent O's (Emma Thompson) character (also played by Alice Eve.) The scenes were not enough to establish K's softer side for "them." Jemaine Clement who played Boris the animal was a-okay. He was "fierce" enough I guess but does little to be a threatening villain.

This film also goes a little backward in terms of special effects that it almost seemed unreal. I don't know maybe it just me or it's the effect of 3-D but it felt distant somehow. The film isn’t bad at all but it’s missing the spark of the previous installments that may have made the film a bit lackluster in providing a spectacular comeback sequel.

Snow White and The Huntsman (2012): Movie Review

The second Snow White movie adaptation is now on theaters featuring Charlize Theron as the evil queen, Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman and Kristine Stewart as Snow White. Two opposite adaptation in which in this film shows a much intriguing storyline and has a much fantastic imaginative CGI effects.

When the Queen died, the King was enchanted by the beauty of Queen Ravena which decided him to marry her but on their wedding night the King was poisoned and murdered. The evil queen took over the castle and locked out Snow White in the stone tower. When Queen Ravena found out that Snow White is the key to her immortality he ordered her brother to get her. Soon Snow White escaped and the queen ordered a huntsman to retrieve her in the enchanted forest. With the help of the huntsman Snow White will now plan and seek revenge to vanquish the evil queen.

If you think you've seen enough of fairytale turned into movie adaptation, well think again. In this newest Snow White film gave it's viewers a lot good moments that really brought out an entertaining storyline. With a good stellar cast including a wonderful performance by Charlize Theron convincingly took care of the role of the evil queen. She is a scene stealer with her astonishing costumes and brilliant effects whenever she is sight. She draws the sympathy from the viewers while she is struggling to to get that undying beauty. On the other hand Kristen Stewart can't seem to get out on her Bella Swan image because in some parts of the movie we still feel watching Twilight and thinking that Edward might pop out of nowhere. While Chris Hemsworth was worth watching in his rugged look as the huntsman.

Yes the dwarfs are still present, can't take them out of the story. The Mirror on the wall, the apple and a prince are all present but providing some twists that brings out some freshness to the plot. Though the chemistry and romance between the leads were barely felt the adventure and decent actions scenes pulled it through. The effects was just outstanding with brilliant creatures really adapting into a fantasy atmosphere even shrinking some actors into dwarf size was incredible.

Overall it's a really entertaining movie with such great actors in it. The magical tale of Snow White lives on with new things you can really appreciate all throughout the movie.

Rating: 8 out of 10 stars.

    Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)

    Animation | Adventure | Comedy

Both fans and non-fans of the Madagascar franchise will be absolutely taken by surprise by the third installment: Europe's Most Wanted, this time helmed by three directors, Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, and Conrad Vernon, and leveled-up in 3D.

Left stranded by their conniving penguin friends in the wilderness of Africa, the gang of Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), are suffering from increasing bouts of homesickness for their Central Park Zoo. Determined to go back home to New York, they decide to flee Africa and catch up first with the penguins in Monte Carlo-- where they unfortunately caught the attention of a psychotic and highly skilled French animal control officer, the hilariously obsessive Captain Chantel DuBois (a riotous cross between Edith Piaf and Cruella De Vil), voiced by Frances McDormand, who would stop at nothing to catch the animal friends. The gang, the penguins, along with King Julian XIII (Sacha Baron Cohen) and the lemurs, join a traveling circus initially to hide from DuBois, but then it eventually becomes a scheme to get to New York. And thus begins the gang's European invasion, traveling from one country to another, yearning for the Big Apple. But as they are getting to know more about their newfound circus friends (voiced by Jessica Chastain, Martin Short, and Byan Cranstom), they suddenly wonder if it's all about the "the journey and not the destination."

Premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted could be one of the best animated feature films in a long time. With a solid and smooth narrative, richly developed characters on top of the dazzling and breathtaking visuals intensified by the 3D effects, it's a delicious, absorbing, and emotionally engaging animated adventure that the entire family will surely enjoy at the cinema. The film opens like a cannonball shot from a circus tent, immediately sweeping you off with a breakneck-speed action-adventure; soaring into high-energy action and then sometimes gently flowing into quiet and heart-rendering moments-- the scenes all the more made heartfelt by Hans Zimmer's gorgeous film score. Sprinkled with obvious parodies of a popular movie, of Edith Piaf, and of a certain "French-Canadian" traveling circus, it frequently induces frequent bouts of chuckles, and sometimes even belly laughter, along with a tangible sense of pain, loss, love, and adventure.

Madagascar 3 is indeed an unexpectedly sophisticated and enjoyable romp, succeeding in sustaining your rapt attention until the explosive and colorful last act. It has all the elements of a delicious adventure story: home, journey, friendship, and the exciting lure and mystique of the world of circus. Like diving into a colorful and richly told children's storybook, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is an absolute super eye-candy treat that is brimming with heart.

    Must-see in 3D.

    Gone (2012)

Amanda Seyfried is back as she stars in this psychological thriller film. Gone rendered a mysterious plot that will keep it's viewers puzzled as the story goes on.

Jill (Amanda Seyfried) is now living with her sister Molly (Emily Wickersham) trying to get over the trauma she suffers from a serial killer a couple of years ago. One night she came home from work and Molly was gone. She is quickly convinced that her abductor is back for revenge from escaping him. She tells it about the police but they never believed in her story. This leaves Jill to gather some clues and hunt her kidnapper with short hopes to see her sister alive.

A lot of critics bashed this film but for us the movie was not bad at all. The story moves straight forward with some good twists. You'll feel that Jill's character is just insane and the movie will have a crappy ending. Well the answer is no, a reasonable ending was given to the movie but a cheap confrontation between Jill and her abductor was badly made. Seyfried's performance grabs our attention as she sells her emotions well in some moments of the film. Her acting seems so natural and she is getting better as her career goes on. Its been new to us to see her in a thriller movie as we got used to see her on romantic or comedy flicks.

Overall Gone was really interesting but just failed to deliver a little intensity in one important part of the film. It's an entertaining movie that will keep you guessing as the story progresses. Amanda Seyfried is one of the good reasons why you should watch it and a 2D version of the film is a much better way to make your moneys worth. A 90 minutes decent thriller flick that will entertain you right from the very beginning.
