In fairness, ha?

Did we hear it right na more than a million na agad-agad ang ginastos ni ER at ng kanyang partner sa produksyon for the first shooting day alone?

Eh, magkano pa uli ang magagastos in the shooting days to come?

We’ve done a lot of research.

Tatanda si Guy hanggang 93 years old sa pelikula.

The production design is super wow!, parang production design ng Oro, Plata, Mata.

Milyon ang gastos, 1st shooting day pa lang. This is really a gigantic film! Sabi, the cost of filming of the entire film wll be around 100 million pesos, not to mention that the talent fee of Robin Padilla as Andres Bonifacio is just gratis. Amazing!

Himala, Tatlong Taaong Walang Diyos, Minsa'y Isang Gamu-gamo, The Flor Contemplacion Story - some films that catapult Nora Aunor in the immortality of Filipino consciousness in Philippine cinema. Should we add El Presidente into that list? Hopefully so.

Direk Tikoy Aguiluz says directing Nora Aunor is a dream
    by William Reyes

Ang first shooting day ng biopic na El Presidente: The True Story of Emilio Aguinaldo na pinangungunahan nina Gov.

Earlier, we were exchanging text messages with Direk Tikoy at nasabi nga niya na "super hectic ang shoot" nila that first day.

"On time siya.

Emilio Aguinaldo.

DEVELOPING RAPPORT WITH NORA.

Siyempre, pinaghahandaan natin 'yan. Unang-una, kailangan, magkaroon kami ng rapport.

"I think, madali namang mag-develop 'yan. At the same time, tanggalin siguro yung nerbiyos, sa isa't isa."

NORA'S EYES.

No way [na ma-disappoint].

What made him more inspired to go on working with the Superstar?

"Lahat... yung presence niya, yung mata niya," sabi ni Direk Tikoy. "Ibang-iba.

Grabe!

"Grabe! Tinitingnan ko yung close-up [ni Nora], e. Mero'n talagang, there's something. I don't know what it is."

Ang pagka-overwhelm ni Direk Tikoy, at karanasan din ng aktor, as mentioned by the director, ay di iba sa nabanggit din noon ni Tita Midz (Armida Siguion-Reyna) sa isang interview, while she was doing a movie with Nora Aunor in the mid-1980s.

Sabi noon ni Tita Midz, "Kapag kaeksena mo si Nora, you have to be 'on guard.' Kung hindi, mawawala ka sa eksena."

"Oo, yeah.

On the day of the shooting itself, muling tinanong si Direk Tikoy about Nora's participation in the film.

"We're not rushing it. Manganganak [ng dagdag eksena] 'yun," said the director, referring to Guy's role and participation in the film.

For me, ang movie nila ni Christopher de Leon at Bembol Roco na Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos is one of the best movies na nagawa,” sabi ni Direk Tikoy.

Magsu-shooting uli ngayong araw si Guy hanggang Sabado, problema ni Direk Tikoy kung paano paliliitin ang movie na sabi ni ER Ejercito, two and a half hours tatakbo dahil ipapakita lahat ang highlights ni Gen. Aguinaldo.

'El Presidente' spans several decades, Nora arrives earlier than call-time
    by Crispina Martinez-Belen

MANILA, Philippines -- The epic movie “El Presidente” will span several decades in the life of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the first president of the Philippine Republic. So expect the film to be somewhat long, not less than two hours-and-a-half. This is according to Laguna Gov. “ER” Ejercito who plays the title role.

“The beginning of the movie will show me and my second wife Maria Agoncillo (played by Nora Aunor) already in our old age. Me in my 90s and confined to a wheelchair. The story of the General unfolds via flashbacks.”

Gov. ER said Gen. Aguinaldo met Maria Agoncillo (she made the first Philippine flag) when he was already 78 years old.

Produced by Myline Enriquez’s Scenema Concepts Int’l, “El Presidente” will entail a budget of P100 million more or less of which P7 or P10 million is reportedly Nora Aunor’s talent fee. But of course, the producer won’t admit it, saying only that Ms. Aunor is certainly worth more than that but that she agreed to a lesser amount.

They started shooting last Monday in Kawit, Cavite (with director Tikoy Aguiluz at the helm) and Nora surprised everyone by arriving early (her scenes were shot starting at 3 p.m. only). Still, everyone is observing and monitoring the superstar’s attitude and working habits as she has promised many times since she arrived that she has changed her ways, that she won’t put her close friend and manager German Moreno in trouble.

At the press conference for “El Presidente” at Club Filipino last Saturday (Aug. 6), Nora repeated what she has said before that it doesn’t matter if she was second choice for the Maria Agoncillo character and that it’s not the lead role.

Gov. ER said the movie aims to justify all the major and controversial decisions that General Aguinaldo made during his presidency including the sale of the country to the U.S. for $20,000. Aside from the Philippine Flag, Gen. Aguinaldo was also responsible for the creation of the National Anthem and the first Philippine Constitution.

Gov. ER downplays second choice issue over Nora, calls her National Artist; Tikoy to shoot Aunor docu
    by Nestor Cuartero

MANILA, Philippines -- National Artist: Not once or twice but more than thrice, Laguna Governor ER Ejercito kept saying during the Aug. 6 press conference for “El Presidente” that Nora Aunor should, by now, already be declared a National Artist.

The actor-politician, partly instrumental in bringing the superstar back home after eight years in the US, said he will spearhead efforts to realize the ultimate dream that he shares with countless other followers of the country’s acknowledged first multi-media superstar.

Gov. ER also cleared talks that Nora was a mere second choice to Vilma Santos for the role of Maria Agoncillo, the second wife of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo.

He explained that as early as the pre-production stages of the film directed by Tikoy Aguiluz, the staff had been one in its consensus that only the likes of either Nora or Vilma should play the crucial part.

“It turned out that Nora is available, so we cast her,” said ER.

ER also said that Nora’s age is perfect for the role. Gen. Aguinaldo, who was already in his 70s then, married Maria, who was in her early 60s at the time. Nora is 58.

ER said Maria Agoncillo’s role in the life of the General is very vital to the story. A Batangueña from Taal, she was a strong woman, who was, in her own way, the power behind the throne.

She and the General lived together for more than 20 years.

The movie, ER said, opens with the couple, shown in their sunset years. Maria is pushing a wheelchair carrying the general while the two of them reminisce on their common past.

Historical Appeal: Nora said more than anything, she considered the historical appeal of “El Presidente” and the prospect of taking part in an important period film.

She said it was her pleasure to work with the multi-awarded Tikoy Aguiluz for the first time. She didn’t hide her apprehension, “Kinakabahan po ako.”

Asked to comment, Aguiluz said he, too, was nervous about working with Aunor, whom every director working in the industry dreams of directing.

Nora quickly broke the ice by humoring the situation. “Natatakot yata si Direk kasi baka di ako sumipot sa set o ma-late nang oras-oras,” she said in a self-deprecating manner.

She then took the opportunity to ask forgiveness once again from industry co-workers that she may have offended or done wrong to in the past.

Forgive and Forget: Likewise, Nora said she was ready to forgive those who have crossed her or spread ugly talk about her in her absence.

The superstar stressed that she had really planned to come home this year whether or not she had a movie or TV project.

“I have long wanted to visit my younger brother, Eddie, and my children,” she said.

Aguiluz reiterated his desire to do a documentary on the life of what everyone at the Club Filipino that evening said, was the “nag-iisang superstar.”

He added that he had long wanted do that Nora Aunor bio-film even while the superstar was US-based. Now that they’re suddenly cast together in a common project, he thought he might finally get to start it.

Robin is Andres Bonifacio: “El Presidente’s” casting is getting more and more top-heavy and star-studded by the day.

Gov. ER announced that for the pivotal role of Andres Bonifacio, he has asked his good friend, Robin Padilla, to play the part. Robin has reportedly accepted.

History points to a kind of rivalry and eventual disenchantment between Aguinaldo and Bonifacio. The former was even accused of having had a hand in the assassination of the latter. ER said the subject is among the highlights of the film, which eyes international distribution through film festivals and film markets abroad.

    Big project, big returns?
    Published : Thursday, August 11, 2011 00:00 Article Views : 10 Written by : Joey Aquino

THE movie “El Presidente” is expected to create ripples with the heavyweight cast which includes superstar Nora Aunor, Laguna Governor ER Ejercito in the title role, complemented by the high-powered team of Roy Iglesias as scriptwriter and award-winning Tikoy Aguiluz as director.

It also looks like “El Presidente“ does not only want to be a historical film of great magnitude but of substantial educational source as it also explores to answer controversies and issues surrounding the life of the late general and president of the first Philippine Republic, Emilio Aguinaldo.

This can readily be seen from the painstainking efforts made by movie producers Gov. ER Ejercito and Mylene Enriquez to gather details that make up the movie. The trust given them by the Aguinaldo family serves as inspiration for them to excel and succeed.

So much so that the choice of getting Nora to play the role of Maria Agoncillo, second wife of the late Emilio Aguinaldo could only be described as an inspired one not only because Nora would definitely not only give substance to the role but also high value and importance to an otherwise behind-the-power character.

None other than the superstar herself affirmed this when she accepted the role that would make her return to the industry a meaningful one.

Nora’s manager, Suzette Ranillo, handled the negotiations with its producer that eventually resulted to turning everything into reality. Will it spell a good box-office result? Just asking...

Gov. Vi airs her side of the story
    Published : Thursday, August 11, 2011 00:00 Article Views : 12 Written by : Jun Nardo

Medyo third nga ang show business.

And I am very thankful In My Life did good.

I'm a public servant now.

I hope you understand. Ang posisyon ko, damn if you do, damn if you don't.

"Basta ang alam ko, magkausap kami when I was in L.A. dahil manonood siya ng premiere night doon. Hindi siya natuloy but I met all her friends.

“So, definitely, the movie industry, I'm sure, is very very happy sa pagbalik niya.

We're mature enough para sumakay pa. Alam mo ’yung ibig kong sabihin?" katwiran pa ni Gov. Vilma.

At kung matutuloy si Solenn, malamang ay marami siyang eksena with the superstar and ER.

By that time, 60 years old na ang dating Presidente at heneral, pero 49 years old pa lang si Maria.

Wedding scene nina Nora at Gov.

El Presidente: A breather from indie
    by Jerry Donato

MANILA, Philippines - Period films are few and far between. That’s why El Presidente starring Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito and Nora Aunor is something to look forward next year. Let’s admit it: There have been few historical films made in recent years. Baler and Amigo come quickly into mind. While others like Independencia seem to fall under the independent genre.

El Presidente is a breather from commercial and indie movies populating the silver screen. One doesn’t need to cross one’s fingers for any production delay because the epic movie is all systems go. The cameras started to grind early this week. The producers have allocated a budget amounting to P80M to P100M. Cinephiles can expect a grandiose set design and colorful costumes capturing the movie’s milieu. Robin Padilla has expressed interest in playing the Andres Bonifacio role.

“Yes, I did,”offers Gov. ER when asked if he had to inform his uncle, former President Joseph Estrada, about Nora’s participation in the movie. At the height of the call for Erap’s resignation, Nora sided with then Vice-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. “I asked his permission that Ms. Mylene (Enriquez, film producer) was getting us as actors for El Presidente at para makasama si Ms. Nora Aunor.

Gov. ER also recalls that his uncle has recently issued a statement over DZMM and ABS-CBN that Erap has forgiven those people “he has to forgive, especially Ms. Nora Aunor. And past is past. It’s about time to forgive everybody and be friends again. I’m very sure the former President and Ms. Nora Aunor will cross paths and talk again.”

Recording an album and doing movies are what Nora misses the most while in the states. But she admits she was set to go to Manila to see her brother Buboy Villamayor.

“I really wanted to visit my brother even if there was no movie project to make; no press and fans to welcome me,” she says. “I wanted to know how my brother was.”

But German Moreno, Nora’s business manager, told her to delay a bit her homecoming because there were possible projects under negotiation for Nora. She obliged and one of the results was the Tikoy Aguiluz-directed and Scenema Concept International-produced film.

Since El Presidente is her first movie in eight years, the Maria Agoncillo role for Nora is as big as her stature. Gov. ER says Nora’s onscreen presence is felt all throughout the film. She plays the second wife of Gen. Emilio Famy Aguinaldo. After the demise of the first wife named Hilaria del Rosario due to leprosy, Emilio and Maria tied the knot. He was in his late 70s while she was in her early 60s. The governor says the movie will also revolve around the idea that behind the president — a great man at that — is a great woman. Gen. Aguinaldo lived for 95 years.

Contrary to the linear chronological storytelling common in biographies, El Presidente begins with Gen. Aguinaldo being wheel chaired by Maria towards an American journalist waiting for them. In between scenes, different sequences from the general’s life will appear via flashback.

El Presidente might run for two and a half hours capsulating Gen. Aguinaldo’s struggles and triumphs as a stateman, patriot, revolutionary leader, father and husband from his birth in 1869 to his centenary in 1969.

Whether it is an indie or mainstream film, El Presidente is simply a welcome change.

Nora Aunor portrays Aguinaldo’s second wife
    by Isah V. Red

In El Presidente, the film Tikoy Aguiluz is shooting now with Jeorge Estregan (or ER Ejercito, governor of Laguna), Nora Aunor, who planed in last week from Los Angeles, is playing the little known Maria Agoncillo, second wife of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo.

The role, we were told, was offered first to Batangas governor Vilma Santos who said she couldn’t do it with her very busy schedule.

Nora, who was scheduled to come home to visit her younger brother Buboy, had to postpone her trip and faced criticism once more for failing to fulfill her promise to her fans.

She told the movie press last Saturday at the Club Filipino where a press conference was held for the movie that it was German Moreno and Suzette Ranillo who insisted that she postpone her trip until they got word about a mini-series that TV5 wanted her to do. Moreno also told her that he accepted the offer of ER Ejercito for her to do the role that he first offered to Santos.

In reaction to intrigues hurled at her by quarters not kind to the superstar, Aunor said, “Hindi naman po importante kung first or second choice po ako. It’s not important if I were first or second choice. What is more important is if I could be of help in the making of a quality and sensible movie.)

Nora has given the film her priority since she isn’t staying here for long. She also has to do the mini-series for TV5 that will eat up three days of her schedule. But she is scheduling it after her more or less 10-day shoot for El Presidente.

This early, producers are taking interest on Aunor. Regal Films has offered her a part in Hototay, a film scheduled to be shown in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. There is also a company that expressed interest in taking her in as an endorser.

But Aunor says it’s all up to Moreno. Moreno acts as Aunor’s manager now.

The superstar had said “sorry” to everyone whom she thought she had offended in the past. “I will make it up to all of you from hereon. And you will see the change in me as a person and as a professional.”

This threat Moreno said he would make sure that Aunor would fulfill while she is in the country.

    Nora's acting hasn't changed
    ni Nel Alejandrino

NORA Aunor finally faced the movie cameras for the first time, eight years mula nang pansamantalang tinalikuran niya ang showbiz in exchange ng pakiki-pagsapalaran sa Amerika.

Surprisingly, ayon kay Laguna Governor E.R. Ejercito who plays Nora’s leading man sa kanyang comeback movie El Presi-dente, waring walang na-bago kay Nora kung acting ang pag-uusapan.

“Kungsabagay,” tukoy ni Governor E.R.,” mata pa lamang ni Guy is enough na to convey whatever emotions a particular scene requires her to do in a movie. I know really na dapat maging equally competing ako with my performance, para naman ’di niya ako matabunan.

“But I noticed that Guy allows ang mga kasama niya to shine gaano man kaliit ang role nito. E.R.

“Sa first shooting day, ang kasal nina Maria Agoncillo at President Emilio Aguinaldo ang kinunan. The scene will give viewers an idea of how a wedding takes place during that time.

To make the scene as authentic as possible, through research ang ginawa ng production designer na si Des Bautista for that particular scene alone.

“For his effort, I wish to salute Des,” susog pa ni Governor E.R.

Usually, kapag ganyang umalis ka ng Pilipinas ng napakahabang panahon (5 years or more) and stayed in North America or Europe then bumalik ka ng Pilipinas, watch out. Maninibago ang katawan mo sa klima, sa pollution, sa maraming bagay and your immune system will weaken -- that is with or without working while you are in the Philippines. Sakit ang aabutin mo talaga. I am speaking through experience. And also, dadapuan ka ng kuna anu-anong bacteria and viruses dahil halos wala kang immunity sa mga ito dahil you seem to be a stranger in the place the first few days that you arrive in the Philippines from being somewhere else for so long. Sa case in Nora Aunor, I think this lagnat is due to fatigue and weakened immune system. She will be able to recover but usually after 2 weeks of being ill.
