Shaq & Hoopz At Taylor Swift Concert

    Shaq Loves Taylor Swift
    By Chris Dart

You can tell that Shaquille O'Neal is already enjoying his retirement. Here he is with his common-law wife Nicole "Hoopz" Alexander at a Taylor Swift concert in Orlando.

He couldn't have done this when he was still playing. Can you imagine the ribbing he would get if he had to go into the Celtics locker room after being spotted at a Taylor Swift concert? Kevin Garnett would lose it on him. On top of receiving the scorn of his teammates, the trash talk from opponents would have been epic.

Now, Shaq can indulge his love of barely legal country pop stars to his giant heart's content, and no one gets to say **** to him.

    CONCERT REVIEW: TAYLOR SWIFT
    Singer impressive in many ways

    BY GARY BUDZAK

    For The Columbus Dispatch

If anyone knows any reason why Taylor Swift's sold-out concert last night in Nationwide Arena wasn't as an impressive display of girl (and young woman) power that's been seen and heard in recent memory, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.

Swift's 17-song, two-hour-long "Speak Now" performance was impressive in nearly every way. She was compellingly watchable, and even when your eyes weren't on her, there was a plethora of activity going on with her eight dancers and highly active band as they acted out the lyrics of her songs.

When she wasn't on stage Swift set a record for costume changes, seemingly after every couple songs there was something going on, such as a tap dancer or ballerinas to introduce a song, or a three-guitar solo. Meanwhile, Swift kept popping out on stage from the side or from a trap door in some new dress, ranging from red sequins to a princess gown. The show was well-paced, and Swift's confessional ballads were well-placed between up-tempo kiss-offs to exes.

And to those who say country singer Swift doesn't have a great voice, she showed surprisingly good range on Enchanted.

To the strains of Tom Petty's American Girl, and some Swift chatter about what should be said, a giant red curtain parted, revealing an elaborated, stage with three staircases and a wood stage. A shower of sparks flew from the top of the set as Swift, wearing a gold dress and tall black boots, the number 13 written on one hand and something else I couldn't see written up one of her arms, as her band ripped into Sparks Fly on a three-staircase stage.

"This is the kind of crowd we love to play for," Swift said to the predominantly female audience of young girls, teen girls and mothers, "because we can see the signs and hear you sing along."

There were other nice elements to the show as well, such as Swift giving her opening acts much praise (more about them below), and singling out the two Ohio boys in her band, with their families in the audience: Columbus' own David Cook on keyboards, and guitarist Paul Sidoti, originally from Cleveland.

Swift strummed guitars a lot, and even played a ukulele "the happiest instrument ever" on Fearless, while under a rotating tree.

While she didn't play every hit, Swift did do Mine, The Story of Us, Our Song, Mean, Back to December, Dear John, Better than Revenge, Speak Now (with Swift in church, breaking up a wedding), Last Kiss, Fifteen and Haunted.

"Sing along as loud and obnoxiously loud as you can," Swift said at one point, and the crowd obliged on You Belong with Me.

"Columbus, thank you from the bottom of my heart and this song is definitely for you," Swift said, singing Long Live, a love letter to her fans.

On the encore, Love Story, with dancers swinging and hoisted high in the air, Swift was lifted over the crowd on her own private balcony.

Needtobreathe, a rock band from Possum Kingdom, S.C., was the middle act. Lead singer/guitarist Bear Rinehart said his band has performed in Columbus before, usually across the street in the Basement to 100-150 people, and marveled at their turn in fortune. Bear, his little brother/lead guitarist Bo, bassist Seth Bolt, drummer Joe Stillwell and keyboardist Josh Lovelace lightly rocked the audience with adult alternative and Christian songs like The Outsiders, More Time, Something Beautiful and the Dove Award-winning Washed by the Water. Bear Rinehart said Swift's was the best tour the band had been on, and as soon as they finished, the fans chanted "Taylor, Taylor."

Frankie Ballard opened. He's a 27-year-old country singer from Battle Creek, Mich., who got a break by winning his state's version of Kenny Chesney's "Next Big Star" contest. Ballard got his biggest applause whenever he'd say Swift's name, yet his minor hits Tell Me You Get Lonely and A Buncha Girls were pleasant.

Shaq Now Spending Free Time At Taylor Swift Concerts

After officially announcing his retirement, Shaquille O’Neal should expect to have plenty of free time on his hands, but it appears as though he isn’t having any problems trying to figure out what to do with it.

After holding a press conference at his home in Orlando on Friday, Shaq celebrated the beginning of life-after-basketball by attending a Taylor Swift concert with his common-law wife, Nicole “Hoopz” Alexander. The two appeared to be having a great time and Shaq even took a moment to record himself and Hoopz enjoying the show.
