Tim Yap signs as GMA's official events host
By JULIEN MERCED C. MATABUENA
February 5, 2011, 4:04am
MANILA, Philippines – Celebrity eventologist Tim Yap recently inked a deal with the Kapuso network to be its official host for all its upcoming events.
“I wanted to do things for GMA, to take it to the next level in terms of artist development, in terms of red carpet events,” Tim told “Unang Hirit” in a taped interview on Feb. 3.
Leading the contract signing was GMA Films President Annette Gozon-Abrogara, who expressed her delight to work with Tim.
“We're very happy that we're exploring partnership with him this year and we already lined up three productions that we are going to hold with him--TV specials and some events,” she said.
Tim’s first project will be the red carpet premiere of the movie “My Valentine Girls” at Resorts World. “What we're doing pagka may movie premiere, it's really gonna be red carpet. It's gonna be like, talagang taking things to the next level,” said he.
According to Tim, a lot of surprises are already lined up for 2011, which he deems “a very stellar year” for everyone.
A separate report by PEP that same day provided more information on Tim’s upcoming projects.
“Meron din kaming pinaplano na love concert. 'Yung mga singers ng GMA-7, parang Captain's Bar, na we sit there and listen to them sing. May twist kasi 'yang concept na 'yan. So, isisikreto na lang muna natin para hindi ma-preempt,” he told PEP during Mother Lily Monteverde’s Chinese New Year celebration on Feb. 2.
Tim disclosed that another red carpet event is also in the works, and a grand one at that: he plans to seek the help of his contact from Louis Vuitton in Hong Kong or Prada and Balenciaga in Paris to provide the clothes to be worn by the stars.
The “Tweetbiz” and “Party Pilipinas” mainstay then expressed his wish for the Kapuso stars to be more exposed and “to feel [like] they’re [actually] stars.”
“Ang aim ko kasi, I'll try my best to make them brighter, and the event as well, and getting them exposed." He also added, "Parang na-realize ko yung role ko. I was born a bridge, alam mo yun? Nagtutulay ako ng tao. Bakit ba ako may club? I provide a venue for people to be together."
Also in the same PEP report, Tim said that he sees showbiz as a venue to reach people and that he never had a celebrity friend with whom he had a misunderstanding.
However, he admitted that his longtime friendship with Pia Guanio was shaken when he broke the news of her breakup with Vic Sotto on “Tweetbiz” last year. Everything turned out well again between them, eventually.
Tim clarified as well that nothing’s wrong with his relationship to close friend Ruffa Gutierrez. Recall that on Jan. 25, he revealed on his show Ruffa’s text to him confirming Shaina Magdayao’s 2 AM call to her.
“Hindi naman siya [Ruffa] ang nagsabi sa akin no'n. I was just confirming and verifying the truth. And that's all I did. Inilabas ko 'yung truth and pinagpaalaman ko naman.
"Ang nangyari no'n sa 'Tweetbiz,' I just showed my question and the answer. Ang nangyari kasi, 'yung mga lumabas na haka-haka came from other people na," he said.
Answering the long-standing gender issue being thrown at him, Tim said that he’s not affected by it as he only focuses on becoming the best host that he can be.
“And in the end, whoever I wanna go home to, or choose to go home to, sa akin na lang 'yun,” he stated, adding that if ever one’s going to ask him directly of his sexual orientation, he’s only going to answer them while looking at them in the eye that he’s “a human being.”

Kapamilya reclaims no.1 spot
by Isah V. Red
ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s largest Filipino-owned multimedia conglomerate, claims back the spot that rival networks are lustily coveting to be theirs.
The network opened the year 2011 on top with its programs dominating the national TV ratings.
Well, that’s according to the survey group the network subscribes to, and if you don’t know yet, it’s Kantar Media.
Naturally, both the executives over at Kapuso and Kapatid networks could be merely laughing the claim off, knowing that Kapamilya is the only network loyal to this media research outfit with ratings data that send their eyebrows catapulting to stratospheric heights.
Yet, that is ABS-CBN’s right to choose its own research ally, as GMA Network and TV5 are sticking it out with AGB Nielsen for their figures.
So, what does Kantar Media tell ABS-CBN?
For the month of January, ABS-CBN’s garnered a 40 percent audience share or nine points higher than GMA’s 31 percent on primetime despite the Kapuso channel’s two new nightly offerings.
ABS-CBN’s primetime series Noah starring Piolo Pascual and Zaijian Jaranilla got a 27.6 percent rating or 4.6 points higher than Dwarfina when GMA launched it last Jan. 10.
More Filipinos preferred the remake of Mara Clara on ABS-CBN which rated even higher with 29.6 percent or 10.6 points more than the remake of Machete when it debuted on GMA last Jan. 24 with only 19 percent.
On the other hand, ABS-CBN’s own new offering, the fantaserye Mutya, instantly made a splash with a rating of 32.6 percent during its maiden episode last Jan. 31.
Overall, nine ABS-CBN programs made it to the country’s top 10 most-watched programs in January topped by Mutya.
In close second was Mara Clara with an average rating of 30 percent and followed by Noah with 27.7 percent.
TV Patrol, the most-viewed primetime newscast in the country, obtained a 27.2 percent national ratings and placed third in the top 10 list.
For its timeslot, TV Patrol has been consistently beating 24 Oras (20.8 percent) and TV5’s Willing-Willie (12.8 percent), contrary to the impression being claimed by other sources.
The other ABS-CBN programs in the top 10 include Imortal (26.3 percent) in 5th place, followed by weekend top-raters Wansapanataym (24.3 percent) and Maalaala Mo Kaya (23.4 percent).
Korina Sanchez’ Rated K (21.6 percent) topped all current affairs programs and placed eighth overall in the top 10 list, while Goin Bulilit (21.2 percent) placed 10th.
The Kapamilya network remains no.1 nationwide with the highest overall audience share of 36 percent over GMA’s audience share of 34 percent for the month of January.
ABS-CBN generated net income of P2.9 billion for the first nine months of 2010, as it sustained into the third quarter the strong growth momentum in regular advertising revenues in the first semester. This profit level is more than double the net income of P1.3 billion in the first nine months of 2009.
Kantar Media, a global market research group, offers audience research measurement systems in 32 countries. It started releasing its Philippine television audience measurement data in February 2009 with panels composed of 1,370 representative households covering urban Philippines and reporting on seven sectors namely the National Capital Region, North Luzon, Central Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
ABS-CBN shifted to Kantar Media/TNS after filing a case vs. AGB Nielsen Media Research for failing to comply with its request to investigate alleged cheating and data tampering in TV ratings. The case is still pending in court.
The Kapuso and Kapatid networks can probably say “Amen” to that. Asks someone from GMA, “Which media group, apart from ABS-CBN subscribes to Kantar Media?” I can only look up to the sky while trying to recall if I ever encountered one.

Pinag-uusapan na ang pagbabalik nina John Estrada at Randy Santiago sa “MTB” nu’ng Chinese New Year party ni Mother Lily. Will this be another “Pilipinas Win na Win” na naging Pilipinas Lose na Lose naman, ha Dindo and Isah Red?

Brew-ha-has at ABS-CBN
ABS-CBN is canceling The Brew talk show on its ANC channel after only one season. The official reason? Casting problems.
Patterned after the controversial US talk show The View, the local brew last month lost one of the three host witches, Nadia Trinidad, after the reporter-turned-producer left for the United States to head the US news bureau of the Lopez network vice Regina “Ging” Reyes.
The soft-spoken Reyes, as you may have previously read/heard, has been asked to return to Manila to become senior vice president for news and current affairs, the department head position vacated by Maria/Mario Ressa.
According to the network’s conspiracy theorist, Bob O. de la Yuca, The Brew has become a casualty in the ongoing purge of the so-called Ressa hires and the reinstatement of the Noli de Castro-Korina Sanchez groupies.
Among those rehabilitated is Dondi Ocampo, Reyes’ producer in the United States who was demoted by Ressa as ANC head of current affairs on probationary status. In addition to ANC’s, Ocampo now heads ABS-CBN’s current affairs as well, effectively combining the two offices.
In the other camp, the last of the Tres Marias, Chari Villa, has been made to hibernate as head of provincial internet content, a rather steep fall from her high perch as head of news gathering—in fairness to the Noli-Korina group, Villa's transfer was made even while Ressa was still riding high at the network.
Another key Maria lieutenant, ANC chief operating officer Glenda Gloria, resigned last month rather than wait and be exiled to the network’s Siberia.
Over at the Philippine Stock Exchange, the stock of the Lopez network gave market watchers a momentary fright Thursday when the share price dropped like a stone during the first trade.
“ABS-CBN Corp., the largest Philippine broadcaster, sank 16 percent to P38 as of 10:11 am in Manila, set for the steepest loss based on prices going back to July 1992. A hundred ABS-CBN shares have changed hands so far today,” the Blooomberg ticker reported.
The stock, which had not traded the previous two days, eventually recovered after another 100 shares exchanged hands at P44.90 a share. The day’s total trade: P8,290.
