4-way tie for 1st possible
Five games are left in the PBA Governors Cup semifinal schedule and still, no team is safely in the Last Dance. Petron (6-7) and Meralco (5-8) are the only semifinal casualties so far, leaving Rain Or Shine (9-3), B-Meg (8-4), Barangay Ginebra (8-4) and Talk ‘N’ Text (7-5) in contention for the two finals berths.
PBA media bureau chief and special assistant to the commissioner Willie Marcial said a slight tweaking of the schedule will make the five remaining games a war zone. The original schedule would’ve pitted B-Meg against Ginebra in the first game and Talk ‘N’ Text against Rain Or Shine in the second of a doubleheader today, Meralco against Petron in a lone contest tomorrow and Rain Or Shine against B-Meg and Ginebra against Talk ‘N’ Text in the final twinbill on Wednesday.
To make things more interesting, Marcial said PBA commissioner Chito Salud approved the adjustment of three games so that now, Meralco plays Petron in the first game and B-Meg battles Ginebra in the second today and Talk ‘N’ Text faces Rain Or Shine tomorrow. The Wednesday schedule is unchanged. PBA legend Ricardo Brown will be feted in a tribute at halftime of the B-Meg-Ginebra encounter tonight.
The intriguing scenario that could develop is a four-way tie for first place. This will happen if Rain Or Shine loses its last two games to Talk ‘N’ Text and B-Meg, the Tropa wins its last two games over Rain Or Shine and Ginebra, B-Meg loses to Ginebra but beats Rain Or Shine and Ginebra beats B-Meg but bows to Talk ‘N’ Text. That will mean the four teams wind up with identical 9-5 records. To break the logjam, the teams will be ranked according to their quotients (points for and against in games involving the four contenders) and a double knockout bill – where No. 1 meets No. 4 and No. 2 faces No. 3 – will be played on Friday. The best-of-seven finals will begin next Sunday.

What are the chances of a four-way tie happening? The Elasto Painters finished the elimination round at the top of the heap with an 8-1 mark. Since then, Rain Or Shine has lost twice in three outings. If the Painters bow to Talk ‘N’ Text tomorrow and B-Meg on Wednesday, they will have lost three in a row – not a positive sign looking forward to the finals. It’s not likely that Rain Or Shine will end the semifinals with just a single win over Meralco. But to create the four-way deadlock, the Painters must lose twice more. For the record, Rain Or Shine beat the Tropa, 92-90, and B-Meg, 100-94 in overtime, during the eliminations. Neither victory was conclusive, opening the door for two reversals in the semifinals. No doubt, Painters import Jamelle Cornley must step up to avoid complications enroute to the finals. His scoring has dipped precipitously in the semifinals – 36 in a Petron loss, 21 in a win over the Bolts and 13 in a loss to Ginebra.
Then, the Tropa must sweep its last two assignments. If that happens, Talk ‘N’ Text would’ve won four in a row, creating momentum in the charge to the finals. The Texters engage Rain Or Shine tomorrow and Ginebra on Wednesday. In the eliminations, Talk ‘N’ Text lost to the Painters by two and defeated the Kings by two, 113-111. Coach Chot Reyes is in his last conference with the Texters before yielding the reins to Norman Black and the Tropa would like nothing better than to send him off with a bang. That’s extra motivation for the Texters to give it all they’ve got in barging into the finals.
The B-Meg-Ginebra game tonight also figures prominently in arranging the four-way tie. The Kings must beat the Llamados if they lose to Talk ‘N’ Text on Wednesday. By the way, B-Meg trounced Ginebra, 96-88, in the eliminations despite import Marqus Blakely being outscored by Cedric Bozeman, 13-30.

If Ginebra wins tonight then beats the Tropa, it will wind up with a 10-4 record, eliminating the Texters from the running. If Ginebra finishes at 10-4 and B-Meg defeats Rain Or Shine on Wednesday, the Llamados and Painters face off in a knockout game to determine the second finalist on Friday. But if the Painters beat B-Meg on Wednesday, then Ginebra and Rain Or Shine will dispute the title in the finals.
There’s also the possibility that no knockout game will be necessary, leaving Friday for rest. B-Meg could sweep its last two games over Ginebra and Rain Or Shine to finish at 10-4 while Rain Or Shine beats Talk ‘N’ Text to also wind up at 10-4 and Ginebra loses to the Texters to close at 8-6 like the Tropa. In this case, B-Meg and the Painters go straight to the finals.
While the debate rages on who deserves to be the MVP – Mark Caguioa or Gary David, fans are also arguing about who should be the Best Import in the Governors Cup. The frontrunners are Blakely, Bozeman, Paul Harris and Cornley but imports from eliminated squads – Mario West, Jason Forte, Omar Sneed and Zach Graham – are under consideration, too. The imports who make it to the finals will enjoy a big edge in the final reckoning.

Looks like @jeffreichan, @lethalweapon03 aren't gonna b 100% 2moro. They reportedly missed practice 2day. But coach YG still upbeat vs BMeg.

For 2moro's crucial PBA gms, its gonna b Chiqui Reyes & coach Ronnie Magsanoc w/ @padillaerika doing the RoS-BMeg 1st gm,.
The loss to Petron hurt ROS more than anything else. Of course, Petron was still in the running at that stage so it wouldn't really have been easy.
But then, the semifinal round is where you separate the wheat from the chaff. ROS proved to be mighty and strong in the elimination round, as evidenced by their near sweep of all the teams (a close loss to Powerade gave them their only defeat).
But the games are much different as the championship gets nearer. At this point, ROS has proven to be the fifth best team in the league despite their lofty standing at this time. 6 teams were in the semis, only one (Meralco) lost to them. If they beat B-Meg tonight, we forget all these discussion on ROS' seeming inability to step up big at crucial games. They lost Game 7 in their semis series against Powerade which would have led them to a Finals battle against TNT. Now they have two chances of entering the Finals, needing only one win.
Their best chance to do so is tonight against B-Meg. The pressure won't be as big as a sudden-death game on Friday so these young players really have to s_ck things up big time tonight and elevate their respective games to carry the team to their first Finals ever. I doubt if they would stand a chance against either TNT or BGK in a sudden-death playoff so beating B-Meg is primordial.
Can they do it? While ROS has had B-Meg's number a couple of times this season, it remains to be seen if this is enough to give them confidence in beating the Llamados tonight. The key to a potential ROS victory is actually their outside shooting - if they can score well from the outside right at the very start of the game, they'll be difficult to beat. Nothing against ROS' "Extra Rice" combo of Belga and Quinahan but I'll be more secured to see Jervy Cruz given more playing time alongside Jameel Cornley, Gabe Norwood, Paul Lee and Jeff Chan to carry this team. Belga and Quinahan can get their minutes but I won't rely too heavily on them, especially in the crunch when their decision-making becomes suspect.
It would be interesting though if B-Meg would opt to use the twin tower combo once more of Yancy De Ocampo and Raffi Reavis when import Blakely is on the bench. It was proven effective against BGK the last time and it would be interesting if Tim Cone uses the same strategy against Guiao's charges.
What Guiao has in his arsenal though is the presence of a couple of bloodhounds out to stop the offensive games of James Yap and PJ Simon. Having tough defenders like Ryan Araña and Jireh Ibañez will definitely help. Guiao is a master at exploiting mismatches and his ace will be Gabe Norwood.
One very important game for RoSe.No Paul Lee. No iso-hero-ball, walang-pasabit-fishing expeditions-moves.
Sarap panuorin ng ball movement ng RoSe.Just what coach Yeng Guiao wanted.
Oo hindi ako fan ni Paul Lee.![]()
congrats RoS!
