    UP Grading System

Is the grading system in UP *** just like any other Universities (particularly those State U and other private schools with a grade of 1 being the highest)?
Other Universities could not make a student in any honor with a grade of 2.75, is it the same in UP?

  2. #2
The Grading Scale is roughly the same. "Uno" (1) is the highest while "Singko" (5) is the lowest- failing, to be exact- mark.

In UP, you can still graduate with honors after receiving a 3. Heck, you're still qualified even if you get a 5. The only situation that would disqualify one from graduating with honors is being underloaded. That is, having less than a 15-unit academic workload. For example, if you have 18 units and you drop a 5-unit course. Then, your workload will become 13 units and that would disqualify you from graduating with honors.

Unlike other Universities which use "Dean's Listers" as term for ranking students in academics, UP uses a two-tier system.

    College Scholars
are students who attain a GWA of 1.75 or higher in a semester.
University Scholars are student who attain a GWA of 1.40 or higher in a semester.

Attaining a 3 or a 5 won't bar you from graduating with honors, only that you do not become underloaded in a semester. The minimum load for a student is 15 units. (I don't know if it is still the minimum, correct me if I'm wrong.)

Attaining an overall GWA of 1.75 or above upon the time of graduation will make you eligible for honors:

    1.00-1.20 - Summa cum Laude
    1.21-1.45 - Magna cum Laude
    1.46-1.75 - Cum Laude

Sa Grad school nga madalas daw mag-adjust ng bracket ang mga prof eh... 2.0 kasi ang passing grade ng MS at Ph.D.

Tingnan ko. first sem ko lang naman as MS student

Oo, maintaining average pa nga ata 2.0. Pero grad school kasi is different diba? You're expected to have higher grades because of your 'maturity' hehehe :-) And iba rin naman yung grading sa grad school eh.

    Correct. 1.45 nga.

^^1 ang highest grade. Kung ano yung equivalent nito in terms of percentage, kadalasan nga 98-100. Pero may mga subjects na yung teacher nag-aadjust ng range based on the class curve. Kaya yung highest will always get a 1.

Technically, may range corresponding to each grade, but profs may or may not follow it. 95-100 yung 1.00 sa isang prof ko. One time, nakapulot ng syllabus yung prof namin from a different class, at nakalagay dun 90-100 yung 1.00 kaya binago niya yung transmu table nya. Haha.

Some profs teaching extremely difficult subjects also curve grades pag majority ang babagsak. Some profs give only three grades, 1.00, 3.00 and 5.00. I had a prof who give only three grades pero 1.50, 2.00, 5.00 nga lang. As you can see, a certain number of profs have quirky grading "policies".

Mr nightshade, its true, SOME profs are usually lenient at grad school but not all, and you can never know for sure which prof. I know a few former grad students na bumagsak. Ingat lang.

I think yung percentage equivalents ng UP grading system depende sa Department or College. Wala yatang uniform rule talaga. Pero gaya nga ng sinabi ni jielun, mukhang may "academic freedom" pa rin ang mga prof na baguhin yun, ayon sa kanyang kaprisyo. Hehehe.

In addition to Latin Honors, I think ang UPSE may special "award" pa - yung Dean's Medal, for those who didn't make it to the Latin Honors, but whose Econ subject GWA is above 1.75. Or something like that.

hello po, itatanong ko lang po kung ano pong basis (either memo or student handbook) nung pwede pa rin po ma-honor kahit may failed subjects, kasi I graduated cum laude kahit nabagsak ko yung Math 14 and Math 100 and now I am being questioned in different Med Schools that I am applying for. I don't want to think the way they also think about me, "sinuwerte lang daw ako." Basically, I don't even know what to say since I don't know the basis of that rule. Please enlighten me po! Maraming Salamat po!
