UST forces rubber match for UAAP women's football crown
Terrado, JVP, GMA News 03/03/2011 07:36 PM
Jowe-Ann Barruga made up for her missed attempt in Game 1's penalty shootout as University of Santo Tomas beat Far Eastern University, 1-0, Thursday to force a do-or-die match for the UAAP women’s football championship.
Barruga gave the Tigresses the early lead in the 15th minute — and it proved more than enough to send the series into a deciding Game 3 at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the same Ateneo Erenchun field.
Barruga was one of the four UST players who missed their shots during the penalty shootout in FEU's Game 1 win.
The Lady Tamaraws may need to double their effort in Game 2, as their top goalkeeper Jayneth Mercado was sent off in the second half. Playing as a striker, she was issued two yellow cards — both in the second half — barring her from playing in Game 3.
"We hope to take advantage of that, since they lost a veteran player," said UST coach Rozano Estrabon in Filipino.
FEU had a chance to equalize just before halftime after a UST handball inside the penalty box. But the shot of Mara Kristina Sabanal, one of the goal scorers in Game 1's penalty shootout, hit the left post.
UST goalkeeper Zipporah Luna redeemed herself in the second half as the rookie helped thwart FEU’s attempts to tie the score.
The Tigresses are looking to reclaim the football crown after winning it in Season 70. La Salle was the champions the following year, but settled for third place this season.
FEU bagged the Women's title after they eked out a 1 to nil win over the University of Santo Tomas.
Frea Fado scored the lone goal of the match in the 16th minute mark.
Here are the individual awards:
BEST MID-FIELDER - Loreta Ladero
BEST DEFENDER - Mara Kristia Sabanal
BEST STRIKER - Marianne Narciso
BEST GOAL KEEPER - Zipporah Luna
FAIR PLAY AWARDEE- Ateneo De Manila University
