sumakit ang ulo ko sa dami ng new threads. btw, thanks thirdPerson for responding to the silly little questions.
Tsk! sabi na nga ba eh.
As usual,paulit-ulit ang tanaong eh...dpwas...pending. Dami talagang di marunong mag-backread at umintindi.
Patunayan nyo naman na pumasa kayo ng UPCAT and that you deserve to be Iskolar ng Bayan by doing a little backread (i.e. research) and asking a little more intelligent questions. Ok?...ok!
Incoming freshman. I passed my second choice in UP Diliman, BS Economics (my first choice was BS Business Administration and Accounting). I made my choices during the application process last June, but over the course of the school year I've decided I don't really want Economics.
After the UPCAT I was uncertain I would pass, so I leaned toward taking up Management Engineering in Ateneo. But being part of the 4% of students in our batch who passed the UPCAT, I realized how much of a blessing it was. Plus I want the change of scenery, coming from an exclusive boys' school, to get exposed to different people and environments and the independence UP life gives.
So now I'm thinking of shifting to one of these courses:
1. BS Business Economics
2. BS Business Administration
3. BS Industrial Engineering
Is it possible to shift before my freshman year?
What are the differences between the three?
What would be the best in terms of job opportunities, and enjoyability of the program?
How would shifting affect my org choices?
Econ is a good foundation course if you plan to shift to BAA or IE, and I would guess that there would not be a huge difference between the first year classes of Econ and Business Econ majors so if you ultimately want to shift after your first year, you won't have that much of a problem with any of those three programs. However, I would advise you to set aside that thought for now and try to enjoy your first year and your classes. Try to feel it out because you might not want to shift at all.
I would not be able to point out the difference between the three programs, seeing as I am not from any of them, but I am of the opinion that any of those three programs would land you a job in the corporate world. It all depends on which industry or specialization you want to apply your knowledge in.
Shifting would definitely restrict your org choices with regards to college-based or degree-based orgs but there a lot of university organizations to choose from. Personally, I would discourage you from even considering joining an organization before your second sem. You'e mentioned that you are from an exclusive boys' school and that you want to experience the environment and independence in UP, I assure you that you would not be able to do that if you jump head first to joining an org. An org would certainly help you with regards to your acads (as in the case of academic department-based and college-based orgs) and getting to know people you would want to be with in your journey towards that degree, but I think you have to give yourself time to adjust to the environment and the academic demands first before you add the demand of the org application process.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask us.
Thanks Kuya. This was already answered in the other thread "results for UPCAT 2010". Nevertheless, since your kuya here is also a DPWS baby, let me answer this briefly.
Sorry, I've browsed through several threads but I haven't noticed this one.
but thanks for answering. THIS REALLY HELPSThe OUR (office of the Univ registrar) will ask you to give a list of alternative courses/programs that you might want to take aside from the one you indicated in your application form. If there are slots available in your list of programs, then you'll be admitted in that course. As the UPCAT website says, you qualified for the campus; you only need to find a program to accomodate you. Don't worry, the OUR, or at least the admission letter, will guide you throughout the process.
My mother is an atenista, has a degree in ME from Ateneo and is currently part of the faculty of JGSOM. My dad has an IE degree from UPD. People always say pareho ang IE ng UP and ME ng Ateneo. Boy, are they dead wrong.
First let me ask you how strong and confident are you in Math and its applications? IE, like any other eng'g course in UP is so intensive in Math and its applications (Physics, Engineering Sciences and IE courses). If your up to it, then GO IE!. But then again this thread has been resonating with warnings about the evils of Math 17...the first math course youre going to take should you opt to take any of the courses you mentioned above.
The IE curriculum includes 3 subjects each in the CBA and School of Eco but the reverse may not be true...havent heard an IE course for Eco and BA students. To say the least, that alone gives you an idea of how deep and wide the IE curriculum is . Having said that however isnt enough for me to make an informed comparison of the 3 courses.
That deep and wide IE curriculum lends itself to a variety job opportunities. Aside from those doing hard core IE work I have batchmates who are in HR, Brand Management and Finance. Me? I am into strat planning for a multinational finance outfit.
Like Luna said huwag ka muna mag org. I would recommend you get your feet wet first. Do not underestimate the adjustment period required to fully immerse yourself in UP life.
Lastly, get yourself several pairs of tsinelas, shorts and comfy t's. They go well with the atmosphere in UPD
Hello po! Nag-post po ako ng thread about my inquiries at salamat po kay kuya thirdPerson who told me na i should post here instead to avoid crowding the forum First time ko lang din po dito sa PinoyExchange kaya hindi po ako familiar sa functions ng forums
I passed in UP manila, course po ay Occupational therapy. First choice ko po yung campus and course. Kaso po, i've had a change of heart and ayaw ko na po na mag med and i would like to transfer to UP diliman.
Do i need to work harder than other students of my batch?
2.) Mahirap po ba mag shift ng campus? Is it as hard or harder than simply shifting a course in the same campus?
3.) What courses would be similar to BAA that would be advisable for me to take? I'm currently a class president at our school and i am very active during school-held activities.
Thank you po in advance! )
1. Since UP Manila ka galing, make-credit yung mga General Education subjects. This includes the communication subjects, history, basic math, etc.
2. Yes. Mas mahirap. Mas priority kasi ang mga shiftees from the same college, then the other colleges from same campus, next ang mga from other UP campuses, then mga transferees outside the UP system.
3. I think BA at BAA under the College of Business Administration. Pero may Economics din at Business Economics under the UP School of Economics, and if you ask me, active din ang college na ito sa mga projects like parties among others.
Teka, who said bawal lumipat sa CBA? The rest kasi galing na from UPD too. See number 2 above for the hierarchy of slot priority.
Try mo munang i-enjoy course mo ngayon. Maraming ganyan na sobrang gustong lumipat. Pagdating ng second sem ayaw na.
^ang alam ko, special cases lang yung pinapayagan na magpalit ng course before enrollment. like yung may mga scholarships na may restrictions on the courses that they should take like DOST scholars na restricted to engineering and science courses and pwedeng kunin. may batchmate ako dati sa Kalai na Journalism ang pinasahang course pero pinayagan na lumipat sa Engg dahil DOST scholar.

Sadly, I cannot see a BS IE curriculum, but the UP Engineering handbook is available for freshies of UP College of Engineering. Just get your hands on one of them from your friends when you enter UP.
Regarding Econ, Business Econ, BA, and BAA, they have almost the same curriculum on their 1st year (except that Econ and BEcon has Econ 11): Math 17, Math 100, and a lot of GE's. IE already has a Chem 16, Physics 71/71.1, and a Math 53 (in place of Math 100) in their 1st year. In case you cannot shift to BS BAA on your 2nd year, since it's usually competitive, you may opt to shift to BS BA before 2nd year, then BS BAA before your 3rd year.
Anyway, it's better to see it yourself in job sites like jobstreet, jobsdb, etc.
Regarding enjoyability, I think BS Econ has the head start since it has 14 free electives. You may use it to take subjects you may like: Math, Foreign Language, Political Science, etc. BS BAA students, on the other hand, have a very serious and competitive aura around them.
BAA have JPIA (Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants)
BA have ABAM (Association of BA Majors) <--- IDK if BAA students can also join this
IE have EnggSoc (Engineering Society), CIEM (Circle of IE Majors), and IE Club
Some orgs are also course neutral. Mostly, these are provincial orgs and sports orgs.
Thank you for pointing that out thirdPerson, I forgot to specify that only DOST scholars may change programs before registration.
Hello, UP PEX resident guides and fellow freshmans. Can someone answer the question in my thread? I appreciate any reply. Sorry if I cannot repost my question here, since I'm mobile ATM and I'm eager to know why..(see my thread)

Thank you po sa mga reply^ang alam ko, special cases lang yung pinapayagan na magpalit ng course before enrollment. like yung may mga scholarships na may restrictions on the courses that they should take like DOST scholars na restricted to engineering and science courses and pwedeng kunin. may batchmate ako dati sa Kalai na Journalism ang pinasahang course pero pinayagan na lumipat sa Engg dahil DOST scholar.
Ask ko lang po kung
2.) Would it help me po kaya if i approach the OUR early before enrollment? Kahit po letter, community work, or anything?
3.) Kapag nag-shift po ba ako sa UP diliman sa second year, icoconsider po ba nila ako like another transferee or as a UP student?
Thank you po ulit in advance! Sorry po kung marami akong tanong, pero I'm about to make one of the biggest decisions in my life and O would appreciate all the help and advice i could get. I also passed in la salle and hopefully, in ateneo, but I really want to o to Up. The problem is, i have no idea about the course i chose; what does an Ot do, the job opportunity, and i've never even met one before.
Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate it.
