we won the gold medal in our home soil during that time. also we send players like marlou aquino, jun limpot, johnny abarrientos, vergel meneses, vic pablo and bong ravena to represent the team. francis rodriguez coached the team. the clip was all about the 2nd half action between against thailand.

actually wala pa akong alam sa basketball nung time na nangyari to except for my mom who is a basketball fan na eversince. napansin ko nga din malalakas din yung mga pinadala nating players that time kaso maliban sa mga nabanggit kong players, di ko naman alam kung sino yung mga kasali pa sa team although mababanggit sa vid na nandun din si boyet fernandez, nonoy chuatico, at allan sasan.

I remember being at the Araneta Coliseum then. A bunch of girls behind us we're swooning over Pablo and Meneses.

I also remember that then VP Doy Laurel was in the crowd, and was acknowledged during the halftime break, but was promptly booed by the audience...

Nakapanood din ako nyan sa Araneta noon, laban ng Philippines vs Malaysia, ito ang last time malakas ang all-amateur team natin, all of them would join the PBA draft after.

while i agree na malakas ang team noong 1991, my best SEAG basketball roster would be 1995. the 91 team could not blow out their opponents unlike the 95 team. not all were lucky enough to have good PBA careers but i would think it was the best all amateur team. players were marlou aquino, bal david, rodney santos, ruben dela rosa, mar morelos, don camaso, jason webb, cris cantonjos, jomer rubi, paul du, ronnie padilla... this was the best the PBL could offer then.. core of stag pale pilsen team pa yata ito noon.

    Spong,

Would you recall the last player in this team as well as their coach? What I know is Tembong Melencio handled the 1993 National Team in the SEAG, for this one, was it Alfrancis Chua?

Please correct me if I am wrong but I think Mark Anthony Tallo was the substitute of Johnny Abarrientos at the PG position.

The last player on the team was Braulio Lim of UE. The coach of the 1995 SEAG team was Joe Lipa, who replaced former Shell coach Arlene Rodriguez.

Jay, aleancelo is right.. i forgot braulio lim. he also got the coach right! thanks aleancelo.

Thanks Alean. Regarding the other PG in that 1991 team, it was Boyet Fernandez who backed up Johnny Abarrientos as court general. He didn't have the same fluidity and rhythm that Abarrientos had but was a steadying influence inside.

surprisingly tony boy espinosa wasn't selected in the line-up as well as olsen racela who was at that time an rp youth veteran, to back up abarrientos at the point. by the way who got the bronze during that time?

the 1997 edition that had adducul, ildefonso, rivera, francisco, rubi, morano, etc. and coached by nat canson if i'm not mistaken could've also been the strongest pbl contingent but a loss against indonesia during the elimination round made it worse although that was our only loss but we could've ended the tourney undefeated.

their youth counterparts were more dominant as they swept the seaba jrs. and placed 3rd in the abc championship (now known as fiba-asia youth championships). that team was composed of kerby raymundo, enrico villanueva, yancy de ocampo, cyrus baguio, ervin sotto, derrick canlas, bj manalo, christian coronel, emerson oreta and brit reroma. louie alas was the coach of that team.

That was also a surprise really. Francis Rodriguez opted to have Boyet Fernandez in his team. I'm only guessing but I think Rodriguez chose Fernandez because he was his point guard in his amateur team in the PBL.

As for the 1997 RP Men's team in the SEAG, would you be able to recall the other players in that lineup? Also, who were the other two players in that RP Youth team of 1997? Lastly, anyone here who can complete the 1995 RP Youth team? I have in my list the following players: Romel Adducul, Danny Ildefonso, Ogie Gumatay, Mark Telan, Paolo Mendoza, Ralph Rivera, Brian Gahol and Dominic Uy - still short of 4 names. Who also would recall the coach of that team?

Jay, pls include allen glenn patrimonio. i remember his game against japan and he was simply awesome!! =) we beat japan that time. coach was virgil villavicencio. PTV4 even covered the games. but i think we finished 5th.

bonzie, it was coach dong vergiere.. if im not mistaken, the "loss" to indonesia was our way of not meeting the hosts malaysia in the finals.. we were "afraid" of their dirty tactics and homecourt advantage.. that was SO STUUPID that i do not consider that team a philippine team. imagine? we were "afraid" of malaysia???

Espinosa was still a rookie at La Salle in 1991. The national team was already formed at the beginning of the year. Thus, Espinosa was still unheard of. In fact, he only became famous in 1991 because of that controversial championship game. As to Racela, there were other outstanding point guards in the amateur league at that time. In fact, Racela was just a sidekick of Ritchie Ticzon at the Ateneo. He only blossomed in the professional league after years of hard work, perseverance, and dedication thus, he even outlasted Jun Reyes and Ritchie Ticzon.

I am not sure if Rubi was in that team. But Rensy Bajar of San Beda was the starting point guard of the 1997 team.

Gerard Francisco, Allen Patrimonio, a guard from UST named Angelo Velasco, and Ernest Medina of FEU. The coach was Virgil Villavicencio.
