GMA-7 launching all-news channel

GMA Network Inc. is set to reprogram Q-TV Channel 11 into an all-news channel starting early next year to compete with ANC Channel 27 of rival ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.
Newly-installed GMA Network president Jaime Duavit said the reprogramming of Q-TV would make it the first free-to-air all-news channel in the country. ABS-CBN’s ANC Channel is part of the programs offered by cable companies.
Duavit said the reprogramming of Q-TV 11 would also prevent the cannibalization of the Channel 7 programs and mean lesser cost to the company.
Unlike the ANC Channel which is a 24-hour news and current affairs program, however, Q-TV 11 will be available from 6 in the morning until 12 midnight.
GMA Network has been providing programming for Channel 11, which is women-skewed, with a grid primarily designed according to the sector’s schedules and needs, through a co-production or block time agreement signed with ZOE Broadcasting Network in 2005.
GMA Network chairman and chief executive Felipe Gozon said he expected Q-TV to at least break even after its reprogramming.
GMA Network, which airs Channel 7 on free TV, last week reported that net income in the third quarter of the year fell 26 percent to P583 million from P788 million in the same period last year due to higher advertising rates and lower ratings during the period.
Airtime revenues dropped 12 percent to P3.049 billion in the third quarter. They comprised 92 percent of the company’s total revenues.
Despite the disappointing third-quarter figures, officials of the broadcasting firm expect the company to reach if not surpass the P3-billion net income target for the year.
Net profit of GMA Network in the first three quarters rose 6 percent to P2.272 billion from P2.149 billion on year. Revenues grew 8 percent to P10.876 billion while expenses went up 11 percent to P6.181 billion.
Revenues of Channel 7 climbed 7 percent to P9.262 billion while those of Q TV Channel 11 rose 10 percent to P346 million. International revenues rose 10 percent to P700 million while radio’s surged 73 percent to P443 million.

business news is business news. and besides, there is a tv rating thread na. follow the rules
Weak ratings pull GMA’s net
GMA Network Inc. on Thursday announced that its third-quarter profit dropped by more than a fourth because of the boycott of its two major advertisers and weak program ratings. In a briefing, the broadcasting company said its net income from July to September fell 26 percent to P583 million from P788 million in the same period last year.
The company blamed the disappointing third-quarter earnings on the absence of political advertisements, a drop in program ratings and the implementation of new advertising rates.
GMA Network shares fell to P7.35 apiece on Thursday from P7.63 each on Wednesday.

BROADCAST GIANT ABS-CBN Corp. reported a net income of P2.9 billion for the nine-month period that ended September, more than double from P1.3 billion in the same period last year as it sustained growth in regular advertising revenues.
In a statement on Friday, the company said consolidated revenues from January to September reached P24.7 billion, a 35% growth from a year ago. "Advertising revenues accounted for 68% of consolidated revenues, while consumer sales accounted for the remaining 32%. Net of non-recurring political advertising revenues, the contribution of consumer sales would be 35%," it said.
ABS-CBN said consolidated advertising revenues across all platforms and subsidiaries reached P16.9 billion, P6.2 billion or 58% higher than the P10.7 billion for the same period in 2009. Revenues from regular advertisers grew by P3.9 billion or 37% to P14.6 billion while non-recurring political advertising revenues carried over from the first semester amounted to P2.3 billion.
"Total advertising minutes sold by [flagship] Channel 2 from January to September jumped 46%. Advertising minutes sold to regular advertisers rose 36%, accounting for 93% of total minutes. Election-related advertising in the first semester contributed 7% of total minutes sold," the company said.
"Consumer sales reached P7.8 billion, posting an increase of P160 million or 2% from a year ago, mainly from the contributions of Skycable and ABS-CBN Global," it added.
ABS-CBN Global’s revenues rose by 8% year-on-year in US dollar terms but this growth slows to 3% in peso terms with the continued decline in value of the US dollar. "Strong double-digit subscriber growth in cable TV and IPTV subscriptions in Canada and in direct-to-home satellite subscriptions in Australia continued to drive growth in ABS-CBN Global’s overall viewer count by 7% year-on-year," the company said.
Cable operator Skycable reported a 10% hike in consolidated revenues from cable TV and broadband services, powered by a 77% increase in broadband service revenues.
"Total expenses in 2010 grew by P3 billion or 21% year-on-year to P17.4 billion, driven mostly by higher production costs and general and administrative expenses. Total production costs in the nine-month period of 2010 rose by P1.2 billion or 26% to P5.9 billion, as total programming hours of in-house produced primetime dramas, afternoon programs, and variety shows increased by 36% to meet viewer needs and advertiser demand," ABS-CBN said.
Rival GMA Network, Inc. earlier said it was on track toward reaching its year-end target of P3 billion in profits as it posted a net income of P2.272 billion from January to September, up by 6% from last year. The network, however, reported a 26% decline in net income for the third quarter at P583 million, compared with P788 million in the same period last year.
Shares in ABS-CBN closed lower at P54.80 apiece yesterday, from P55.30 on Thursday.
mas maganda ang current ratio ng GMA7 kaysa sa ABS CBN, as shown below.
Current Ratio
Provides an indication of the liquidity of the business by comparing the amount of current assets to current liabilities.
bonggadacious ang GMA7 kitang kita ang kakayahang na ma meet ang mga maturing oblications and debts. unlike other network, na kailangan pang mga REFINANCE ng existing debts para makabayad.
pero ang pnka-tanong... Anong Network ba ang no.1?
Anong Network ba ang No.1 pag-dating sa ratings Nationwide? (viewership)
Anong Network ba ang No.1 pagdating sa Revenue? (market)
"ABS-CBN ang mas tinatangkilik ng mas nakararaming Pilipino saan man sa Mundo"
at ng mga Advertisers as well.
---

afterall, it's a bit iffy if you would base your decision on sample data that is so small with regards to the national tv ratings.
