College of Pharmacy

About the College:

This course is a rigorous and interdisciplinary four-year degree program, designed to provide a well-rounded educational background and specialized training in the various fields of pharmacy with the aim of improving the public's quality of life through optimal use of medications.


The curriculum seeks to:

Stress the fundamental principles as applied to therapeutic agents and provide opportunities for hospital, community and industrial exposure as well as involvements related to drug therapy so that in practice, the students may better understand and predict the nature and biological activity of drugs.

Familiarize the students with the business principles and legal requirements, which applies to the practice of pharmacy.

Equip the students with the knowledge, comprehension, abilities and skills necessary to meet the professional demands of pharmacists as they participate as vital members of the health care team.

History

The College of Pharmacy of the National University was founded in July 1922, with Dr. Eugenio Quesada as dean, with the following as faculty members: Angel Arguelles, Lina Olaguer, Carmen Caniza, Ramon Feliciano (Deceased), Maria V. Gutierrez, Pedro Limcaco, Maria Tirona Sta. Ana. (Deceased), Jose Tolentino, Walter Gearn, Alice Gearn, Carinne Rohrer, Honorato Ordoñez, and Remigio Jhocson.




In 1924, some twenty-five students graduated as Pharmaceutical Chemists by virtue of which the college was accredited by the government. Dr. Quesada continued to hold the position as dean of the college until January 1937, in which he was appointed member of the Board of Pharmaceutical Examiners and inspectors. Dr. Ramon Feliciano was his successor until the outbreak of World War II, and after the liberation when the college continued its operation in 1946. A year later, Dean Feliciano was appointed member of the Board of Examiners for Chemical Engineering and Mrs. Maria V. Gutierrez was appointed as the third dean of the college. The college received government recognition on the 20th of November, 1946.




In its more than thirty years of existence, the National University College of Pharmacy with its competent dean and faculty members, have srtived to serve the mission and objectives for which its was founded – mainly to adopt the proper approach and methods of teaching its students and to mold these students into responsible and globally competitive citizens. It has succeeded in making pharmacy students learn and understand, not only the fundamental principles concerning their profession but also, and most essentially, training them in the practical phases of pharmacy, to prepare them for the vast horizons which awaits a pharmacy graduate.




For this reason, the College of Pharmacy, with a sense of pride, can claim that it has prepared, developed and produced graduates who have distinguished themselves in their area of expertise. Scattered and distributed all over the Philippines are National University, College of Pharmacy graduates who are successful as drugstore owners, manufacturers of pharmaceutical products, owners of schools, professors, and administrators in government institutions. The College has also produced graduates who have been appointed as members of the Board of Pharmacy, namely: Mr. Generoso Velasquez, Dr. Illuminado Cada, and Atty. Apolonio Juat.

Objectives:

The objectives of the College of Pharmacy is to educate and train students who have the desirable personal, intellectual, and moral traits that predict a successful career in the practice of pharmacy.

The education and training of students will ensure that graduates have the ability to acquire and develop the knowledge, skills and competencies on:



Basic and clinical pharmaceutical sciences

Basic pharmaceutical skills as necessary for the practice of pharmacy

Critical analysis of professional literature, including using the latest information retrieval technology

Effective communication between pharmacists, patients or other healthcare providers

Career Opportunities

Community Pharmacy

The majority of pharmacists work in community practice. R.A 5921, also known as Pharmacy Law, requires all community pharmacies/drugstores to have a licensed pharmacist, so many practitioners own and operate their own pharmacies. Many pharmacists also work full time or part time as managers or pharmacists-in-charge.

Community pharmacists supply and distribute medicinal and related products and are especially responsible for substances restricted such as dangerous drugs. Advice and counselling given by the pharmacist play an important role in maximizing the usefulness of medications while minimizing side effects.



Community pharmacy is continuously evolving, most recently through offering additional services such as:

providing information to the public and medical practioners
reviewing medication
advising medical practitioners about optimal drug therapy and disease-state management.


Community pharmacists are becoming a fully integrated part of the healthcare system. They also play a role in primary health care and health education and are often the first point of contact with the healthcare system. Pharmacists have the expertise to suggest or supply medications for minor illnesses, and to recommend that a customer consult another health professionals. Pharmacists also provide a range of medical equipment and therapeutic devices (such as nebulisers and crutches) and explanations about how to use these correctly.

Hospital Pharmacy

Hospital pharmacists work in acute care settings in either the public or private sector. Like their counterparts in community pharmacy, they distribute and review medications, as well as educate patients and allied health professionals to achieve quality use of medicines. Hospital pharmacists perform clinical and applied research, including clinical drug trials, drug utilization studies, applied interventions and pharmaco-economic evaluations. Increasingly, hospital pharmacists provide hospital-to-community liaison services to help patients manage and monitor their medication upon discharge.

Hospital pharmacists work in multidisciplinary teams with medical staff and allied health professionals to provide optimal patient care. They monitor drug therapy to detect and/or minimise the risk of drug interactions and side effects. Many hospital pharmacists attain specialist status in selected therapeutic areas such as cardiology, immunology, manufacturing, hematology, oncology, paediatrics, and aged care.

Industrial Pharmacy

Because of the broad medical knowledge and skills obtained as part of the Pharmacy degree, graduates are also well suited for employment in the pharmaceutical industry. Pharmacists are sought after in the manufacturing, medical, sales and marketing sectors of the industry.


Pharmacy graduates have the potential to take part in all stages of drug utilization, from development and production to registration, clinical assessment, and sales and marketing of products to health care professionals. Employment in the pharmaceutical industry may also provide experience in business development and travel overseas.

Research

Postgraduate study allows interested students to gain experience and skills in research. The Faculty has a rich research track record and students have the opportunity to work with world leaders in several research fields. Pharmacy qualifications offer unique career options and flexibility, combining a professional degree with research experience. Graduates may seek employment in full time research work or choose to pursue a research-based higher degree.

Pharmacy graduates with research experience are sought after candidates for senior roles in the pharmaceutical industry.

Other Opportunities

Pharmacists are employed by various government agencies, generally in positions concerned with the control, manufacture, supply and distribution of medicines and medicinal preparations. Openings also occur in the defense services and academe.

Thanks ha! naghahanap kasi ako school na 2 years pharmacy lang. i just need units ng pharmacy like pharmacology, medicinial and pharma chem, cell biology and pharm analysis. bka kasi kailangan ko nun pag nkpag Phd ako ng pharmaceutical science or medicinal chem. bs chem graduate ako and currently pursuing ms chem.

College of Engineering

The College of Engineering has a long and proud tradition at the National University, having been part of the curriculum since 1925. Today, the College consists of six disciplines: Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, which is the flagship among the baccalaureate programs because of the number of the board placers and topnotchers it has produced since 2004.



The Master of Science in Sanitary Engineering program, which is yet the only masteral program offered by the College, is attended also by the graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering from other universities in the country. Student numbers have grown steadily since 2009 because of the commitment of faculty members to attract more enrollees for the program.

It is rightful to say that quality has also improved since 2009 because of the renewed administrative support and the entry of more qualified faculty members who were attracted by the developments in the College. In 2009, SM Foundation enrolled a number of scholars to the College making the studentry a lot more competitive with other engineering schools.

Starting this school year 2010-2011, twenty (20) students from different parts of our country who want to take B.S. Civil Engineering will enjoy full scholarship grants from New Golden City Builders, a private construction firm involved in the construction of the new buildings of National U. These scholars were selected based on a qualifying exam and an interview by the sponsor.

Recent strategic planning process in the university reaffirmed the College’s strong commitment to research. At present, faculty members are active participants in research consortium projects like the University Belt Consortium projects.

PRoGRAMS

Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

This is an additional degree for graduates of Civil Engineering from National University and other Universities. The course is designed to prepare students in the field of environmental sanitation, industrial hygiene, pollution control, water and wastewater engineering, solid waste management and engineering design of sanitary facilities for buildings.



Length and Nature of the Program:

Evaluation of subjects completed in the BS Civil Engineering is done based on the NU BSCE curriculum. Graduates of other universities may or may not have completed similar program, at times they will be required to enroll additional subjects other than those listed in the BS Environmental ans Sanitary Engineering curriculum which can be finished in one year (two semesters) for a full time student.

The course has a total of forty-six (46) units, of which, 2 units are laboratory units. The curriculum includes at least one (1) plant visit and one (1) technical seminar.



Graduates' Expected Career Paths:

Graduates are expected to pass the corresponding Board Examinations given by the Professional Regulations Commission.

The practice of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering embraces the following activities:

(a) Sanitary surveys, report, design, direction, management, consultation and investigation of: (1) Water purification plants, water collection and distribution systems, reservoirs, drainage and sewer systems, sewage treatment plants, malaria and control structures, sewage disposal tanks and other structures for public health and welfare; (2) Projects related to stream pollution, insect and vermin control or eradication, rural and camp sanitation, milk and food sanitation; and (3) Systems for the prevention of atmospheric pollution or the control of indoor air, especially the air of working spaces in industrial establishments (industrial hygiene engineering).

(b) Professional research and laboratory work supporting the activities listed in (a).

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

The BSCE program covers a broad area that embraces practically all the other branches of engineering. The course prepares the students to be competent in the field of construction management and engineering, transportation engineering, structural engineering, geo-technical engineering, water resources and hydraulics engineering.

Mechanical Engineering is a discipline engaged in the design, construction, installation, commissioning, supervising, operation and maintenance of mechanical works, process or plants such as power, refrigeration, air-conditioning and manufacturing plants, mills, and shops which involves mechanical machineries and equipment.



Length and Nature of the Program:

The BSME program is a 5-year course of a two-semester academic calendar year. The course has a total of 231 units requirement.

Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering

This program is geared in the fundamentals of electronics and communications engineering. Students will be trained on the academic and practical applications and hands-on work on designs, project study, computer exercises and practicum on the following fields of specialization: Broadcasting, Telecommunications, Fabrication and Manufacturing of semi-conductors, Designs of circuits, Instrumentation, Computer Programming, Automation, Robotics, Industrial Electronics and Signal Processing.

Electrical engineering is divided into two main fields, namely, the application of electrical energy to light and power, and the use of electricity in communication. Within these fields are a great variety of opportunities and activities, which are open to those interested in this branch of engineering.

The Electrical Engineering program aims to give the students (1) the fundamentals of electrical engineering science; (2) the modern methods and practices in this field of engineering, tempered with Philippine requirements and conditions; and (3) in instruction and practice in the methods of analysis using the basic principles of physics, mechanics and mathematics in the solution of electrical engineering problems.

Computer Engineering deals with the hardware and software design of digital systems and computers. The field encompasses both the practical and theoretical aspects of the use and design of computers. The early design methodology of computers, analysis, processor design, control design, memory and I/O organization, and system organization - are still important, but have been likely transformed by new applications.

Scientific Applications: the design and preparation of programs in support of engineering applications.
