National U Update
Magical: Pep Squad breaks spell, places 3rd in UAAP CDC
The new kings and queens of the UAAP Cheerdance Competition have been crowned.
With a magical routine that captivated an audience of almost 20, 000 people, the National University Pep Squad broke its spell in the UAAP's most popular event after winning third place in both the cheerdance and group stunts tilts on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The royalty-themed performance wowed the judges --- some of them from Europe and other Asian countries --- and allowed the NU crew to nail its first podium finish since the competition began in 1994.
University of the Philippines dazzled once more with a performance that saw all their athlete-dancers shave their heads while Far Eastern University, clad in body-hugging animal prints, placed second for the second time in three years.
Before the competition, NU coach Ghicka Bernabe shared that spectators will be in for big surprises.
"Last year was like an appetizer," Bernabe said. "Now, we're ready to serve the main course."

'Heavyweights' join NU as Deans
As part of National University's commitment to academic excellence, two "heavyweights" have assumed posts as deans of two flagship colleges at NU.
Former DOST Secretary Dr. Estrella Alabastro has been appointed dean of the College of Engineering while Dr. Remedios Cruz will head the College of Business Administration as its dean.
Dr. Alabastro was the chief of the government's science and technology department for almost 10 years (2001-2010) and has been with the DOST in different capacities since 1995.
She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines in 1961 and also holds Masters and Doctorate Degrees in the same course from Rice University in the United States in 1965 and 1967, respectively.
On the other hand, Cruz is the former Vice President for Human Resources of China Banking Corporation, and was instrumental in helping the company sign one of the best collective bargaining agreements in the industry in 2006, according to the Manila Bulletin.
Cruz is also the wife of Palanca Hall of Fame writer Isagani Cruz and was formerly the Board Chairman of the Bankers' Council for Personnel Management.
