    National University (Manila)

    Our History

A young man, barely 23 years old, had a vision of inculcating among the youth the qualities of competence and leadership, high moral and spiritual values and development of each individual into a total person. These would be acquired through an educational process guided by the philosophy of Dynamic Filipinism. This philosophy has as its guiding tenets, the internalizing all that is good in the Filipino people . . . . Warmth, hospitality, innovativeness, and a high emotional quotient that has made Filipinos renowned in service oriented industries.
This young man , Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson , guided by this vision , founded Colegio Filipino , now NATIONAL UNIVERSITY in August 01 , 1900 , in Quiapo, City of Manila . It was the first non – sectarian and co – educational institution then. There were only a handful of students at that time in the fledgling School, and they were in the elementary and secondary (High School) levels. Don Mariano, in order to help the school grow, was teacher, director and janitor rolled into one.
In a short span of 5 years, he offered courses in Business – bookkeeping and accounting, convinced that thus armed, his students would be financially secure and respectable after graduation. This led to the changing of the name to Colegio Mercantil , awarding the diploma
of Perito Mercantil . A short time later, the Philippine Law School was opened with the collaboration of the Lacson brothers. Don Mariano saw the dire need for training the youth for leadership and responsibility. He firmly believed that the discipline of Law would turn out men and women who would eventually be advocates for Philippine self government.
In 1916, the Board of Trustees changed the name from Colegio Mercantil to National Academy. The growth of the Academy was continuous, added Liberal Arts which became the gateway to other disciplines that followed.
After 21 years of educational service, on January 17, 1921, the Board of Trustees applied for and secured permission from the Department of Public Instruction to change the name of the National Academy to NATIONAL UNIVERSITY. On that same day, the University also installed Senator Camilo Osias , one of the most respected and outstanding Filipino educators as President of the University.
Thereafter, the Colleges of Education and Commerce were opened in the same year. During the following years, the Colleges of Pharmacy and Dentistry were opened in 1922. The College of Engineering, offering initially Civil Engineering opened in 1925 and the Normal School in 1930. Sanitary Engineering was initially offered in 1930.
From July, 1945 its facilities have since continuously expanded and the following disciplines were added – Bachelor degrees in Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering and Architecture and Arts. Master in Sanitary Engineering was also organized.
Responding to the needs of industry and modern technology, the University started offering the following courses: Computer Science in 1990, Marine engineering and in 1994 Computer Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering. College of Nursing was
offered in 2004, Hotel and Restaurant Management in 2008 and Information Technology in 2009.
On January 01, 1998, a disastrous fire razed four buildings of the University – the Main Building, Law and Commerce Building, Elementary Building and the Graduate School Building. The University was able to re-open its doors after three weeks of unrelenting
    restoration work.
In the last quarter of year 2008, the SM Group of Companies acquired majority ownership of the National University. The all out support of the SM Group will help strengthen our institution as Higher Institution with new infrastructure, improved and upgraded laboratory,
    focused in academic excellence.
Today, the University is engaged in a continuous modernization and upgrading program for its facilities, faculty and sports development. Our new University infrastructure is an 8 storey modern design building with two units of escalators and four units of elevators.
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY is a founding member of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and is a pioneer of the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU). Its international affiliations and memberships include the Association of Southeast Asia Higher Institutions of Learning (ASAHIL) and the International Association of Universities (IAU).

    VINTAGE NEWS:

Henry Sy buys 60% of National University

MANILA, Philippines - Mall magnate Henry Sy, Sr. has joined the bandwagon of taipans who have acquired private universities, recently gaining control of the 108-year-old National University (NU) in Sampaloc, Manila.

SM Investments Corp. President Harley T. Sy told reporters last week that the Sy family bought a 60% stake in the country’s first private non-sectarian school last June from the family of the late founder, Mariano F. Jhocson.

The younger Sy however did not disclose how much the transaction was worth, saying only it was purely the Sy family’s decision and did not involve any of the company’s diverse units.

But he said the Sy family has a lot of plans for the school, and wants to make it one of the country’s top universities.

Mr. Sy said the plans include a new eight-story building inside the university campus and the renovation of some old buildings.

The new building is expected to rise in a 13,000-square-meter lot, housing new classrooms; laboratories, and a multi-purpose gymnasium on top, which could hold up to 1,200 people.

Aside from the new building, which is due for construction later this month, the Sy family plans to add 16 more laboratories and expand the existing ones, increase the number of classrooms to 80, attract new faculty members, and make NU more active in sports, a source said.

"We are hoping [to] make it survive for the next twenty years. NU was based on the foundation [of] providing lower-cost [but] quality education [to students] compared to [the] other schools," he said.

The Sys plan to focus on courses like Nursing, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Pharmacy because of the "increasing demand in these courses."

The Sy family reportedly wants to "overhaul" the small university and has been pirating professors from the country’s top four universities — Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, and the University of Santo Tomas.

As of the moment, the source said the family has no plans to increase the school’s tuition next year despite the construction of the building and new facilities to be finished by May next year.

He nevertheless said that with the new facilities, the family expects NU’s enrollees, which has gone down significantly over the years, to double next year.

"We hope to make the school competitive again," the source said.

NU opened in Aug. 1, 1900 as Colegio Filipino and was later renamed Colegio Mercantil with the introduction of business and accounting courses. It became the National Academy in 1916 and was renamed National University in 1921. The university offers courses like architecture, commerce, dentistry, education, engineering, computer science, entrepreneurship, liberal arts, nursing, and pharmacy.

NU also has a graduate school and offers elementary and high school education.

Mr. Sy said the acquisition of NU is part of the family’s "socio-civic role" in society, noting that the family wants to sponsor yearly at least a hundred scholars who can study in the school of their choice.

The mall taipan through SM Foundation has sent hundreds of students to college. To date, 630 scholars have graduated from the SM College Scholarship Program, which maintains 400 scholars at any given time.

Aside from NU, the Sys, through Sysmart Corp., hold a minority stake in the publicly listed Far Eastern University, which is controlled by the Montinola family.

Other taipans already have education as part of their portfolios.

Manila Bulletin and Manila Hotel owner Emilio T. Yap serves as chairman of Centro Escolar University, which is also listed in the stock exchange.

Tobacco and airline magnate Lucio C. Tan owns the University of the East, while Alfonso T. Yuchengco controls the Mapua Institute of Technology. The Phinma Group of Ramon R. del Rosario, Jr. bought Araullo University in 2004. - BusinessWorld

^ This thread was not created so that ALL PExers should post their comments. This thread was created to serve as an informal publicity for my school. If you don't like the idea, no one is forcing you.

I'm not one of those trolls here who keeps on posting non sense threads about school bashing.

So, if you don't have anything good to say. Don't bother going in my thread.
