You're kidding, right? WoW aped every MMO that came before it. I only said Everquest because it's one of the first huge ones to gain popularity. Also, Warhammer called, they want their lore back."World of Warcraft is an Everquest-based game."
Not really. WOW wasn't built upon Everquest, nor was it a direct inspiration.
How so? Sure, they're from different companies but much of their talent come from Berkeley and it's no secret that all these other companies are following in Pixar's footsteps."Despicable Me, it's a Toy Story-based movie."
Now this is silly.
All of these are independent of genre. Genre is a completely different thing. There are many different ways how you can go about it, e.g., how many plays it (single or multiplayer), alliances (solo or team or versus), internet connectivity (online or offline), where you play it (console or PC or handheld), realtime or turnbased, by controller (joystick, touch-based, motion remote control, controller-free) etc.
Barely. I'd argue this is only due to the game engine's restrictions. Rarely do you get to control units other than your own hero and there's no base building. And it's also an RTS.
They can describe it all they want, but "DotA-based" is not a genre. That's the only point I'm trying to make.If they wanted to describe it with a more accurate adjective (DotA-based), then what is so wrong about that?

Just bugs me that people keep inventing genres when existing genres work just fine.
