    Windows Phone Thread

What's your take on the new mobile OS to be released by Microsoft later this year? It looks promising in my opinion. Something out of the box I should say. The user interface looks unique and doesn't look like an Iphone rip-off. The addition of Zune and Xbox live support makes it even more exciting. I'm glad Microsoft has stepped up their game and it's about damn time Apple gets some serious competition. It's a make or break point for Microsoft.

The company announced during the launch that it would add
copy-and-paste functionality to Phone 7 in early 2011. The
company initially planned to leave copy-and-paste out of the first
version of the device, but decided to change its plans due to
    customer demand for the feature.

Also, Microsoft NEVER siad they wanted the Metro UI to look like
this always. When Ballmer first annouce WP7 he said the
following, he stated Flash, UI skinning would not be support on
the 1st release. Which means revision 2 will probably allow
artificial skins on the UI. They wanted the first release to be
    standardized for a reason.

    Too little too late?

    From http://webmechs.com/webpress/2010/10...ttle-too-late/

Virtually all the complaints leveled against the iPhone apply to Windows Phone 7 handsets as well! e.g. No multitasking, No Flash (and no Silverlight either!), crappy Bluetooth support (I am guessing since Windows 7 doesn’t have an A2DP profile - required for connecting to Bluetooth headets - the same is likely to apply to Windows Phone 7).

God knows why, but MS killed the Courier -> http://www.google.com.ph/search?&q=m...courier+killed

I don't know about you but, with the exception of Windows 7, (but including Vista) lately MS seems hell bent on shooting themselves in the foot.

    See Crockford's excerpt at:

    http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/theat...?v=crockonjs-2

when folks at Netscape were saying that Netscape Navigator was going destroy Microsoft. Microsoft said ‘oh, we don’t want to be destroyed’. It turned out Netscape Navigator didn’t destroy Microsoft. In fact, the software that is going to destroy Microsoft is Windows Mobile.
Of course now they've fixed things with Windows Phone 7, but it's pretty much the ninth inning if you ask me...

    No Silverlight?
Does this mean that WP7's browser doesn't support Silverlight and that it only supports out of browser Silverlight apps?
Because the developer tools has it listed.
    http://create.msdn.com/en-us/home/getting_started

Microsoft isn't new in the mobile market. AFAIK the Smart Amazing Phone was the first Windows Mobile powered phone in the Philippines. Windows Phone 7 is more of a paradigm shift for them as the Windows Mobile 2002 - 6.5 was more of bringing the desktop experience to the phone which really didn't work. Windows Mobile's multi-tasking feature though would be surely missed.

Yes I'm aware of the above, and was what got me excited about developing for Windows Phone 7 in the first place.

It's possible the situation you describe could be the case, but then, I'm not sure why they would ban Silverlight in the browser if it can be run off-browser...? So perhaps it doesn't work altogether at all on the first gen of WP7 devices?

Need more info on this issue, but my suspicion right now is that like on the iPhone, these VM-based platforms really do eat up far too much battery power to be feasibly run on today's mobile devices.

I really find it very funny that people here who have no access to the OS, who has virtually no experience with it, are already judging it to be a failure: a "shooting-yourself-in-the-foot" failure. Wait for it to launch, let consumers who will be using the first gen of this phone OS tell you (or post in their blogs/forums) their experience with the device and the OS. Otherwise, you may reserve your judgment for future use if and when people will be actually using it.

I am not talking about the user interface of Windows Phone 7 devices, which, based on reviews is supposedly even better than that of the iPhone's.

I am talking more about Microsoft's grand strategy (e.g. long term) and how it is already so far behind Apple's and Google's that merely introducing a phone (and frankly, not even mobile device) OS with what is essentially a better skin and precious little else is not going to prevent the erosion of MS market share, nor help it compete in the future.

Apple already has a very well supported and very polished OS for slate devices (iOS) and Google's Android 3.0 which is intended for the latter as well is about to come out.

Not only does Microsoft have NO coherent mobile device strategy at all, whatever technologies it needs (Silverlight/desktop CLR) to bridge the gap between phone and other mobile platforms does not seem very well attended to in Windows Phone 7.

So the prediction is that Microsoft will ultimately LOSE the mobile platform space to either Apple or Google. If you were a developer, which would you develop for: an OS that runs on both phones and slates (Android, iOS) or an OS that just runs on a phone?

Microsoft actually has the chance to provide an OS/platform that runs on phones, slates AND desktops (via browser plugin) and which is well ahead of anything that Android or iOS has to offer (e.g. a language-neutral CLR-based platform). This release of Windows Phone 7 shows that they seem to neither recognize whatever remaining strengths they have nor have any sense of urgency about competing in the mobile space.

In his Matt Lauer interview, Ballmer called the Windows Phone 7 devices "delightful". I'm sure they are. But "delightful" is not going to help MS beat iPhone/iPad/iPod or Android.
