CRISTINE REYES
Taking the Lead
JOINING A REALITY TALENT competition has proven to be either a blessing or a curse. On one hand, winners — and even losers — have gained a swift entry into the entertainment business and an instant fanbase and event went on to achieve even greater milestones (See Kelly Clarkson, the original American Idol, or Sarah Geronimo, who won the top prize in the defunct singing search Star for a Night). And then there are those who have fallen quickly as soon as they rose, struggling to find good projects long after the shows ended and eventually disappearing from the scene.
Actress Cristine Reyes is one of the lucky few who’ve avoided the reality TV curse. A product of the first edition of GMA-7’s Starstruck (believed by many to have kickstarted the reality talent show trend in the country), Cristine saw her stock rise starting last year, having shared top billing with Anne Curtis and Derek Ramsay in No Other Woman, the second highest grossing Filipino movie of 2011, and nabbing the coveted part of Piolo Pascual’s leading lady this year in the teleserye Dahil sa Pag-Ibig. Not bad for someone who finished ninth in the competition, way behind eventual winner Jennylyn Mercado.
All these career highs wouldn’t have been possible if Cristine isn’t savvy about the showbiz game. Going into Starstruck, Cristine was just known as actress Ara Mina’s younger sister. It didn’t help that she got an early boot from the competition. Still, she made the most of the experience, doing the guest rounds of GMA-7 shows. Her big break came when she started to pose for men’s magazines
and transferred to ABS-CBN. Soon, people started to take notice — and her career finally looked like it was going somewhere.
As a Kapamilya, Cristine really blossomed, starring in a number of afternoon drama shows where she dared to disprove everyone’s notions about her being just a pretty face and a hot body. Her efforts slowly paid off. For her starring role in Eva Fonda, a remake of an ‘80s Alma Moreno movie, Cristine earned a Best Actress nomination at the Seoul International Drama Awards 2009. It’s also in the Kapamilya network where she met her boyfriend, actor Rayver Cruz.
In Dahil sa Pag-Ibig, her first lead role in a prime time soap, Cristine stretches her acting ability by playing a character different from her previous ones. “’Yung mga unang nagawa ko sa ABS puro old maid, ‘di ako pwedeng mag-ayos so I’m so excited.” Adding to her excitement is the chance to work with Piolo whom she described as perfect. "Parang... totoo ka ba? Totoo ka ba talagang tao?" she said.
Cristine attributes all these successes to her passion for acting. "Mahal na mahal ko ‘yung acting at hindi ko 'to iiwan. Basta nandiyan ‘yung passion mo sa craft mo, magtutuloy-tuloy ‘yan," she said.
This career-driven mindset is why marriage with Rayver isn’t on the horizon just yet, despite reports that they secretly tied the knot while in New York to ring in 2012. "Marami pa kaming gustong ma-achieve sa buhay namin," she said.
Just recently, she was crowned Box-Office Queen by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation at the 43rd Box-Office Entertainment Awards for the commercial success of No Other Woman, sharing the honor with Anne Curtis. "At least, meron akong masasabi ko sa pagtanda ko na, 'Oy, one time nasa highest grossing film ako, 'di ba?” she said. “Hindi lahat nagkakaroon nu’n." – Marion Jaymes Lazo
