How to Become an Asian Triathlon Superstar,
Step #2: Learn how to handle being a celebrity from a real celebrity
Monday, September 8th, 2008.
Yesterday night I got to be part of Gabby Concepcion’s small entourage. It was fun! As you may recall, this is the older brother of my cousin’s husband (Rick) who is a famous movie star here in the Philippines. To me, he’s just Rick’s brother. But for Filipinos every where, it was like Zac Efron in a room of screaming prepubescent girls. Yesterday I got my first taste of the Asian celebrity life!
I hadn’t seen Gabby and his wife Ginbee since they moved back to Manila from the US earlier this year. Rick is also here at the same time to visit the family. Yesterday was a Sunday, which is a huge “family day” in the Philippines, and tons of relatives and family friends came by the house to have lunch and smoke. (Almost everyone smokes here, it’s kind of yuck.) so Gabby and Ginbee come by and Rick pawns me off their way as I didn’t have plans for the evening. They asked if I wanted to go to the mall show with them, and Gabby told me to try not to get bored!
He was apparently a really big deal back in the 80′s, then moved to the USA for I think 13 years, and then back to Manila. Now he is on a hit TV show (a romantic drama) and recently released his first CD, full of what the Pinoys love best, slow sappy love songs! He is doing a series of promotional appearances at the local malls for the new CD, where he sings a few songs and then signs autographs. So we took off with his good friend Martin, who was acting as driver and psuedo-manager, the four of us in the car with dark tinted windows.
Off to the Santa Rosa Star Mall! It was delightful fun as the crowd was barricaded and they just went CRAZY, absolutely CRAZY when they watched him sing. There was so much cheering and screaming, it was deafening. I was very impressed with how he handled the fans, he was really sweet, nice, gracious, and funny. Ok, he was speaking in Tagalog but I got to sit with Ginbee by the front of the stage and had Martin translating for me. I helped frisbee the fliers/mini-posters of Gabby and his TV show into the crowd after the performance and I was immediately swarmed by a sea of arms grabbing at me from EVERYWHERE. Oh my god. these women are FANATICAL. I was way too slow at this and a bunch of girls broke through the side barricade, grabbing at me! OH GOD. Good thing I am bigger than all of them, some of them were jumping up to try to grab a poster, and a security guard had to come help fight them off. He was smaller than me, but it helped.
Ginbee and I went shopping in the mall during the autograph signing and it was like going to Serramonte. You see, I grew up in Pacifica, California, right on the Pacifica-Daly City border, and went to elementary school, middle school, and high school in Daly City. Daly City is a predominantly Filipino town and anyone from Manila knows where it is, because everyone here has family there!! Our high school was essentially half Filipino and half Chinese (slight exaggeration, but just slight) and Serramonte was our local mall. So quite honestly I am used to being in a sea of Filipinos, and going to the stores, the Starbucks, and the Wendy’s here is not too different, except for the pastries at Starbucks, the spaghetti on the menu at Wendy’s, the Tagalog language, and of course the ever-present soundtrack of sappy love songs.
We stayed in the car as we watched Gabby go into Max’s restaurant for some promotional photographs (they had sponsored the mall appearance). I was very amused watching everyone in the restaurant get up and turn his way as he made his way through Max’s, with an even bigger crowd gathering as he made his way back to the car. People were following us as we drove through the parking lot and yelling “Gabby Gabby Gabby!” He always had to be escorted by Martin and a few security guards just getting out of the car and into buildings. crazy!!
The whole thing was kind of nuts (and to me kind of hilarious) but it was still not as psychotic as Britney Spears being pursued by the paparazzi. Phew. So what did I learn from this experience and how can I apply it to becoming a triathlon superstar? Well I certainly thought it was awesome having so many fans cheering their little hearts out. I think the Ironman equivalent would be having spectators cheer for you as you are winning an Ironman. Ok, let’s add that to the “to do” list. It is also really important to be nice to your fans, treat your sponsors well and in general, don’t be a douchebag! Your public image is important and rest assured, I plan to be one of the triathlon pros who is always fun, approachable, willing to write you an autograph and take a photo with you. Ok, so I’m not famous yet but who says I’m not trying?

Remembering a leukemia victim
By Skip The Beat
Word for today: REMINISCING! Enough reason why the Little River Band came up with one appropriate title for a bouncy yet song.
If you remember, the movie world saw the emergence of one promising celebrity who would have made her mommy proud because of her wits and courage. Showbiz caught up with her very briefly though.
Yet she made a tremendous impact on everyone particularly those who believed in her and sympathized with what she was going through. She would be rearing children by now or still doing the catwalk or even making movies.
That, of course, could have been pluses to the equation that's Roxanne minus leukemia.
She is known to all and sundry in showbiz as Roxanne Abad Santos. Well, I won't force the issue whether the name rings a bell or not. She is best remembered for her spoken English and the way she graciously spoke it.
Fans knew her as a model and a promising flight stewardess (this idea occurred to me suddenly as if I heard her say it). In her interviews, she oozed with beauty and confidence. She was a good actress on her film debut and she could have made it internationally as a model or a beauty queen. But then again, God wanted her for Himself early.
Roxanne left a legacy to proud parents and kins, memory to fans and friends and a beautiful movie called "Miracle of Love" produced by Gabby Concepcion under his own GC Films.
The movie was shot abroad. Europe for sure, but it was in Venice where they had most of the scenes. Tell me, the pairing was great and the film bordered on the ideal: frail girl meets sturdy boy.
Boy gets shooed and girl shying away because she feels they are not meant to be. The film also bordered on reality: Roxanne, in real life, was actually ill. She was dying.
There were scenes that I myself find very hard to handle like falling hair because of cancer treatment. Roxanne effortlessly played that part, although she did not have to. She was just being herself in that movie. Wonder if the bleeding part was real or not. Can't really tell.
Gabby, as co-actor and producer was very supportive, so was Snooky Serna. In the film, Snooky played the daughter who was vowed by her parents to the monastery life. Bad, her life got complicated when she fell in love with Gabriel. Worse is, they parted ways and Gabby left the country, and once abroad, he met the sick Roxanne who was no longer in fine form when she met Gabriel (played by Gabby). Her ways showed not a hint of malignancy in her and what not.
In the end, love conquers all. Gabby was reunited with Snooky. So what happened to Roxanne? Love moves in mysterious ways as God does. Roxanne did not die in the movie though. She became a nun. I was very happy the movie had a happy ending!
Unfortunately, Roxanne passed away before she could even watch the movie herself. "Miracle of Love" was her first movie and it was also her last.
Article from Parade Magazine

The star of the moment is putting on his socks and shoes in his room when we get to speak to him. We apologize for interrupting this otherwise private moment. But he has to rush off to another appointment soon, and this is the only time. Private as the moment may be, gabby concepcion must give it up.
He has learned to cope, he says, although at first he was "scared and apprehensive about the whole idea of becoming public property."
There is a note of quite acceptance in the voice of this young man whom practically everybody describes as a product of good breeding. (He is the grandson of Oscar Arellano, founder of Operation Brotherhood). In his room are tell-tale signs of respectable upbringing, a Sto. Nino, a crucifix and a Bible.
"Since the Lord has given me ample opportunities to reach people, I guess I have to make use of them. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't take grass. Perhaps, I was given a clean image so people would realize these things aren't necessary. In the same way, perhaps, I've been given popularity so that I can make people happy," he says.
The moral direction Gabs would like his career to have has made him wary of the way his image is projected to the public. "I wouldn't wear trunks for a pictorial unless I were in a pool. If I'm outside shorts will do," he says. He still shudders whenever he remembers his introducing role in Katorse where he cavorted onscreen wearing only his briefs.
"I hate that scene, I've promised myself never to do a similar scene again." gabby vows. "It was my first movie and I didn't want anything to go wrong so I followed the director. There were so many people involved and I didn't know what would happen had I refused. But I've learn my lesson."
If he were not in showbiz, things would be radically different for him. "I'd have friends in my house everyday. We'd listen to the sound system, drink soft drinks-not beer. We'd tell jokes, or go outside to play football. Once a week we'd go biking or jogging. I guess it would be fun to be an ordinary person like your friends."
