From Lieca's baul: An old Ricky Lo article about Gabby, the teenager.
“He is too good to be true,” says Lino Brocka who directed Gabby Concepcion in the just shown “Burgis” and the soon-to-be released “First Love”. “He is well behaved on the set. He keeps to one corner while everybody is monkeying around. He doesn't curse. He is prim and proper. And you wouldn't catch him urinating just anywhere. When he changes clothes or his pants with some people around, he makes it a point to cover himself with a towel.”
“He doesn't have an alalay when he arrives on the set and his clothes are neatly folded inside a maleta, hindi yung basta nakalagay sa mga hangers at gusot-gusot. He is really a nice boy properly brought up, not just a boy trying to be nice to project a clean image. He is Jose Marie all over again.”
If Gabby is such a nice boy, why has he been the object of harsh criticisms of late?
“The trouble with Gabby,” says a respected director who doesn't want to be identified, “is that he is so faultless that people try to find fault with him. They just can't believe that somebody so good and so wholesome can have the guts to join the movies. Let's face it: it's a dog-eats-dog world and Gabby stands out because he refuses to play their game.”
That makes him a square peg in a round hole. The situation of Gabby is not any different from his role in Burgis: a rich man's son is expelled by an exclusive boys school and the only other school that would accept him is a lower-middle class school where students actually resent his presence and dismiss him as burgis. But the rich boy goes out of his way to win his schoolmates and wins only some of them.
MY LIFE WITH GABBY
by JENNY CONCEPCION (nung 1995)
Yes, it's already been two years since tinseltown's heartthrob Gabby Concepcion exchanged "I do's" with the former Jenny Syquia. Here is an exclusive article written by Jenny herself, she gives the public a peek into their family life.
When friends from the states ask me what it's like being married to a movie star I laugh and have to think about my answer. I think that's because I don't feel like I'm married to a movie star. In my eyes, my husband Gabby is just a regular guy who takes out the trash and enjoys washing his own car. But Gabby is a movie star all right. I get a kick out of it sometimes when we're out in public and girls start to scream when they see him. Lots of times they'll even run up to him and try to kiss him. People ask me if it makes me mad or jealous. It's funny because I never think about it that way. I always tell myself, "Hey, great! I know how they feel!" It's nice to see fans so excited to see Gabby and to know that he, by just being there. can brighten up their day. A wonderful part of him being a movie star is the fans who send him so many nice letters. They care about him. One of our ninangs and a godmother of cloie is a fan of Gabby whom we both love dearly. It's always an inspiration when when we get a letter from a fan, and think that, "Wow, this person sat down and took all this time to send us this card." We're always touched.
GABBY IN PRIVATE
"What is Gabby like in private?" people always ask me. Well, "in private" is how I know him all the time so that's the normal way he is for me. He is, well normal. He does normal things. He likes to watch Discovery Channel, he likes to spend hours fixing car engines, he likes to eat tuyo and bagoong. Some people know that Gabby is color blind, but they don't realize the extent of his disability. Gabby was even told by our eye doctor and ninong, Dr. Chandru Pessumal, that he's the most color blind person he's ever encounterd. He can't tell if he has on a pair of burgundy, brown or green socks. One time he actually went to some big awards show unaware that he was wearing a bugundy shirt with brown pants, green socks, and black shoes until somebody there told him!
Gabby actually dreamed of becoming a pilot. He went through all the exams passing with great results until it came to the color test. (Pilots need to have 20/20 vision and see colors perfectly to differentiate the landing signals on the runway and the control board). the test involve a bunch of different colored round plastic balls that he was supposed to separate by color by putting them in the baskets intended for them. When the test giver came back to check, she looked at the results and thought that Gabby had misunderstood the instruction! Gabby was so embarrased.
That doesn't prevent Gabby from pursuing his hobby as a painter and illustrator. But he has to use materials that are marked with what color they are. Once he was drawing some green leafy spices, and he had to ask me which pencils were green and what shades of green they were. He would have made the green leaves all red and brown!
The funny thing about Gabby being a movie star is that he's not the type at all. When we first started dating, my Tita Binnie said to me, "You know Jenny, I actually think Gabby is very shy." I didn't know him very well at that time and I was surprised by her comment. I told her that I didn't think she was right because when Gabby was at our house he was always talking. But she countered, "If you noticed, Gabby is always talking because people are always asking him questions. After he makes his answer he doesn't say anything much." She was right. Gabby is actually a very shy person.
GABBY AND CLOIE
When Cloie was born, Gabby was right beside me. We gone through weeks of Lamaze classes, but in the end, I had to have a caesarian section. I remember when the nurses were getting me ready for the operation, Gabby was there with our video camera to capture the event, standing between the blood pressure machine and the oxygen tank. I told him, "You'd better be careful, honey, because if the sight of this operation makes you pass out, you're going to fall and knock this I.V. right out of my arm." He told me it was no problem. In fact, during the operation he watched with extreme caution and intensity. Once, when they were slicing my abdomen, he turned to me and said, "Wow, you really have a lot of layers."
Can you imagine that? Gabby is a great dad. We didn't hire a yaya until Cloie was five months old because Gabby thought he could do a better job of taking care of her. And I think he was right. He handled Cloie like she was a porcelain egg. Whenever people pick her up he wouldn't take his eyes off them, making sure they were holding her head right. Sometimes he would sleep, holding her to his chest. He would mix her formula, sterilize her bottles. Needless to say, Cloie is crazy about him. Before Cloie was born we had four ultrasounds. Two doctors said it was going to be a girl; the other two said, a boy. As my pregnancy went along I started to really observe children and it seemed to me that the little girls were always with their mommies, playing sweetly, while the little boys ran around screaming their heads off and throwing things at each other. I wanted a girl for a first child because I thought it would be easier. I could relate better to her because I once was a little girl myself. On the other hand, I wanted a boy because it would be nice to have a tiny version of Gabby. In the end, I guess we got both. I have an adorable girl who looks just like her daddy.
In the middle of the night when Cloie wakes up and cries, Gabby and I take turns holding her and feeding her. Sometimes if she won't sleep we just take pictures of her. Gabby used to work on two movies at a time and do a weekly show. The only day Cloie and I could expect to see him was Sunday. and only because of Lolit Solis, his former manager, had insisted, when Gabby and I married, that he spend a whole day with me.
ON BEING A CELEBRITY (?)
I put a question mark after that because I'm not really a celebrity. I'm just married to one, so I ended up becoming known. It's like the wife of Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman or Ivana Trump. Would anyone know who they are if they weren't married to famous men?
Being on the public eye definitely has its benefits as well as its drawbacks. One of the best benefits is being able to have my own magazine, BRIDE Philippines, and getting a lot of publicity for it. None of it would have been so easy if I weren't married to Gabby. I'm sure if I had walked up to a publisher and said, "Hi I'm Jane Doe, could you please give me my own magazine?," he would have slammed the door on my face. Of course, my work experience at Vogue gave me a bit of clout, but being Gabb's wife opened a lot of doors for me.
The main drawback, as I'm sure you can imagine, is being fair game for gossips and intrigues. But, as with everything in life, I guess the good goes with the bad. Not only that, as a writer myself, I know you have to write interesting things or no one will read your pieces. But I think there should be some kind of mandatory fact-checking.
The press had worked for Gabby in me in both ways, good and bad. Sometimes, they embellish stories and add good things that aren't true. Sometimes it's the opposite, and they'll exaggerate or fabricate bad things. It's hard to capture the essence of a person in an interview after only knowing him for a few minutes, and even more difficult if you've never met him. But that's the case with several reporters who write about us. Not only that, stories that report intrigues definitely generate more excitement than stories like, "Everything is Fine and Dandy with Gabby and Jenny."
When we first got married there were reports that the chapel where we got married in Las Vegas doesn't exist. So much for investigative journalism. I hope those reporters don't have career plans of becoming private investigators or joining the NBI. They could very well check it out in the yellow pages. We got married in a quaint little chapel called the Little Chapel of the West. I chose it becasue at Vogue we had done a story on Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford and that's where they got married.
" Gabby and I were lucky in the sense that, when he proposed, we'd only only met each other four times so everything was new and, boy was it exciting. I used to stare up at the ceiling at night in my Tita's house, trying to fall asleep but finding it impossible to do so because I couldn't stop thinking about him. It was like I was sixteen years old. When he dropped me off I'd peek out the window to watch him drive away, hoping to get one last glimpse of him. Our first year was a discovery period. Being with him was like being courted 24-hours a day with the luxury of being married and not having to go home to a separate bed every night. It got me to thinking: If Gabby and I had a "normal" relationship (I mean one where he didn't propose right away), this would be the proper time for him to ask my hand in marriage.. I say that because in most relationships, you meet, date, fall in love, become steadies, have your ups and downs, realize that this is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and then get married. For Gabby and I, we had it all backwards. But what's great about it is that now that we are coming to the conclusion that we want to spend our life together, instead of saying , "I want to marry you," we say, "I'm so happy I married you."
To celebrate our anniversary, we plan to go back to Las Vegas where we got married the first time. Maybe we'll get married again for the fun of it in front of Elvis. Or maybe not. All I know is that if Gabby asked me to marry him again, I'd say yes."
