At-least ordonio showed glimpse of brilliance during his rookie year, IDK for ross because during his stay with coke, he was under the shadow of cabagnot in his first conference and then traded for paolo mendeza and got injured from then on. Pero meron pa chance si ross to redeem himself especially with ryan gregorio who likes his team to run unlike with coach boyet fernandez who wants his team to play defense which i think is not the forte of c.ross.

Add to that mendoza's a poor ballhandler, a weak passer - and he's suppossed to be a pg! add to that he's slow of foot and terribly unathletic, we need not look far why SLR sucked for years when he was their starting pg.

Ross can be a very good defensive guard in the pba, eventually. he may never be a shooter, but his defense, slashing and finishing abilities can make him a factor in the league. the fact that he's 6'2 and has pg quickness is a huge advantage in his favor.

Ordonio didn't turn out to be the local kobe that most thought he would be, but he was an elite defender who was once on top of the league in both steals and blocks at the same time.

Powerade did say they'd consider an intal for anthony swap. if i were p'ade, i'd make a deal for either helterbrand or mike cortez. their PG line won't get them out of the wildcards.

ANY offer to Powerade for Sean Michael Anthony should be something tantalizing enough for the Tigers to even entertain it.

This was stated by Powerade coach Bo Perasol yesterday amid rumors some teams are eyeing the 6-foot-4 Fil-Canadian the Tigers obtained from Air21 on PBA draft day last Sunday.

"It must be something we cannot refuse," Perasol told Malaya in a phone interview yesterday.

Anthony, picked at No. 6 overall and then traded by the Express for a future first round pick, has yet to ink a deal with the Tigers but Perasol said the 6-foot-4 player will surely be signed up.

Among the teams widely reported to be interested in acquiring the services of Anthony is Ginebra, which is purportedly willing to give up Sunday Salvacion and Celino Cruz.

Perasol denied knowledge of any formal offer, but said such a package simply will not do, considering the two Kings reportedly fetch monthly salaries in the high-P200,000 while Anthony is starting in the P100,000-range.

"Hindi naman puwedeng one-sided kung ano man ang offer. Kailangan mutually beneficial, hindi ‘yung me isang aatras," Perasol said. "Besides, legit na 6-4 ito. He is a big wingman we sorely need and once he delivers, I foresee a very bright future for him."

Perasol got the chance to see Anthony in action in the Powerade tryouts that began last Tuesday. He was impressed with what he saw.

"Hindi naman automatic na magiging PBA star because offensively, medyo hindi pa skillful at hindi pa masyadong malayo ang range," Perasol added.

"But he is a good defender, a hard worker. What’s more, maganda ang attitude at iyun ang pinaka-importante. Kapag willing mag-trabaho, siguradong mag-i-improve talaga."

In a related development, Alaska yesterday signed up former slam dunk champion Elmer Espiritu to a three-year deal reportedly worth the league maximum of P8.7 million.

Tigers, Llamados also eyeing big men

ASIDE from Meralco, Powerade and defending champion B-Meg Derby Ace are also searching for another big man.

The Tigers are willing to shop around for a frontliner who could take the place of slotman Asi Taulava if and when the latter is permitted by the PBA Board to join the Smart Gilas team seeing action in the Guangzhou Asian Games in November.

The Llamados are on the lookout for a power forward who could augment their frontline in the absence of the injured Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris.

The two teams are merely following the lead of Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio, who the other day told Malaya he wants another big man to backstop centers Marlou Aquino and Beau Belga and power forwards Gabby Espinas and Dennis Daa.

"We haven’t really thought about replacements for Asi," related Powerade coach Bo Perasol. "Our options will definitely be in the free agents’ pool. We don’t know as of yet kung sino ang available."

Derby Ace seems to have the inside track as head coach Jorge Gallent yesterday bared team management is seriously considering Jerwin Gaco, formerly of Barako Bull, as partial solution to his frontline woes.

"We are thinking of getting him pero wala pang final decision," said Gallent. "Within the week pa namin malalaman kung papipirmahin siya."

Gallent and Gaco are no strangers to each other as they have teamed up with the Harbour Centre team in the PBL where they won six titles together.

The Llamados are reportedly working on a deal with Ginebra for 6-foot-6 Billy Mamaril but they are still searching for a third team to make it happen.

Derby Ace and the Kings are sister teams and are barred from directly trading with each other.

Gallent denied knowledge of any deal in progress, but admitted Gaco will be a big help in their title-retention bid. "Jerwin will be a big help. He will be the banger inside and get those loose balls," he said.

Gaco saw action with Barako last season, playing 15 games and averaging 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds. He was reportedly headed to the Philippine Patriots for the ABL, but may opt for the PBA if signed.

The 29-year-old forward also had a stint with the Laguna Stallions in Liga Pilipinas before bringing his act to the Energy Coffee Masters in the Fiesta Conference, when the George Chua-owned franchise tied up with Harbour Centre.

Derby Ace selected a pair of big men in the last rookie draft in Pari Llagas and Val Acuna, but the former UE stalwarts are not expected to make an immediate impact for the team.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) heeded the call to strengthen the national team for the coming Asian Games by giving unanimous approval to the request of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to have two PBA stars reinforce the Smart Gilas team.

In a planning meeting held in Bangkok, Sunday, the PBA board voted to allow Asi Taulava of PowerAde (formerly Coca-Cola) and Kelly Williams of Talk ‘N Text to join the national team for the Asiad campaign.

But the third PBA player sought by Gilas coach Rajko Toroman – James Yap of Be-Meg Derby Ace – begged off saying he has to settle some personal issues. Yap also is recovering from a minor surgery that involved removing a polyp in his nasal passage.

The PBA did not close the door on a third acquisition by the SBP and said it will consider a replacement for Yap so long as the player and the team agree with the terms and condition of the basketball association.

Toroman has long been seeking PBA reinforcement after noting that the current Smart Gilas lineup does not have the size and firepower to adequately stand up to the opposition.

Toroman earlier said that the inclusion of the 6-foot-9 Taulava, who had a previous stint with the team in the Stankovic Cup in Beirut last August, and the 6-foot-7 Williams will definitely improve their frontline.

Yap would have been a perfect addition for the team, taking the role of a shooting guard, which the Gilas team sadly lacks.

PBA Chairman Rene Pardo of B-Meg Derby Ace said it was Yap who personally begged off.

Yap, the reigning PBA Fiesta Cup most valuable player awardee, was dumped by his superstar wife, the popular TV host/actress Kris Aquino, who announced she was separating from the player because of possible irreconcilable differences.

Newly-appointed PBA Commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud announced the decision late Sunday in Bangkok where the PBA board held its planning meeting that was originally set in Hong Kong but scuttled due to the hostage crisis.

With Yap out, Toroman, sources said, is reportedly considering former RP team players Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel Beer and Renren Ritualo of PowerAde as replacements.

Both are shooters like Yap.

With the PBA and the SBP back as partners, Salud hopes the working relationship does not intrude into the PBA program in a way that its top players are subject to regular stints with the national team.

“We’ll sit down with the SBP. The PBA has aired its concern with its specific role with its long term program,” Salud said, adding that PBA players will not spill over to playing in lesser events like the Southeast Asian Games.

The PBA board also approved the inclusion of TNT mentor Chot Reyes as special assistant to Smart-Gilas in the Asian Games campaign.

Meantime, the board also approved the refined rules proposed by Salud, which includes using the maximum 14-man lineup in every game, instead of the previous 14-man unit but only 12 players were allowed to play.

The “no-harm, no-foul” brand of officiating will likewise be implimented.

The PBA will return to its original three-conference format this 36th Season beginning with the All-Filipino conference Philippine Cup on Oct. 3.

The two other conferences are reinforced Commissioner’s Cup and Governors Cup.

Another major trade is reportedly being worked out by four teams with Asi Taulava finding himself donning a Ginebra jersey.

Tigers head coach Bo Perasol said that as of now, the team is open to trades. “If ever we trade Asi, we want a big man also in return like Dorian Peña or Enrico Villanueva,” he said. Kings forward JC Intal is also said to be part of the multiplayer transaction.

Ritualo is only effective against teams that have not scouted us. Just put a bigger guy on him and that's it. Hontiveros, on the other hand, can create his own shots and plays better defense.
