After blowout win, Meralco import Mario West rushes after Ogie Menor

Shortly after helping his team record the most lopsided win this conference, a 106-77 bashing of the Air 21 Express on Wednesday night, Meralco import Mario West caused a commotion that overshadowed the game.

As soon as the final buzzer sounded, West rushed to the Air 21 locker room to confront Ogie Menor, who was ejected in the third quarter for his hard foul on the import.

Television cameras caught West having to be physically dragged away from the Air 21 locker room by teammates.

Unable to find Menor inside the locker room, West trained his sights on Express guard Wynne Arboleda, who said he tried to ask the import to leave his team’s dressing area.

“Nagkatulakan pa kami eh, kasi siya naman yung nauna,” Arboleda told InterAKTV. “Hinahanap niya si Ogie, tapos nakita niyang wala. Nung mayroon nang mga umaawat, tinulak niya ako, kaya ako gumanti rin ako ng tulak.”

Meralco Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio and team manager Virgil Villavicencio said West went to the dugout looking for Menor to apologize.

“He’s a very friendly import,” said Gregorio after the game. “He went there to try to shake the hand of Ogie.”

“He was there looking for Menor and wanted to shake his hands. Mario even apologized to us, so we believe everything is OK there,” added Villavicencio.

Arboleda, however, didn’t buy the team officials’ explanation.

“Iba yung tingin nung import nu’ng pumasok siya sa dugout. I don’t think mag-aapologize siya. Tumakbo siya papasok then nilundag niya pa yung bakal na nagdi-divide sa teams,” said Arboleda.

Mario West had the sympathy of the fans from the Ogie Menor fracas. But Ryan Gregorio and Virgil Villavicencio simply couldn't contain themselves by coming up with a nonsense alibi.

These are times when you want Ryan Gregorio to simply shut up. They already have the upperhand when it comes to generating sympathy from the fans, yet, Ryan has to say something stupid to lose whatever goodwill established...

Meralco zaps Air 21 to boost semis bid

Mario West pumped in 34 points, alongside seven rebounds and seven steals, in an all-around performance that sparked Meralco’s 106-77 beating of Air 21 in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday night.

It was the third win in seven games for the Bolts, who needed to sweep their remaining games to avoid complications of making it to the semifinal round.

For Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio, a sweep is the only way to get them to the next level.

“The goal is to have clear passage to the semis, so sweep is required,” said Gregorio. “It’s a daunting task, but workable. We’ve been in this situation before, now we have to give ourselves a chance.”

The match was all over right from the opening period.

A dizzying 21-0 run by the Bolts shoved Meralco’s lead to 19, 25-6, 2:52 left in the first period.

There was no looking back from the Bolts who remained in eight place but managed to close in on teams from fifth to seventh places.

    The scores:

    Meralco (106) – West 34, Cardona 15, Taulava 11, Mercado 9, Macapagal 9, Bulawan 6, Reyes 6, Hugnatan 6, Ross 5, Yee 3, Aljamal 2, Ballesteros 0, Daa 0, Artadi 0.

    Air 21 (77) – Graham 36, Ritualo 12, Isip 10, Arboleda 6, Omolon 5, Sena 2, Espiritu 2, Menor 2, Faundo 2, Bagatsing 0, Salamat 0, Sison 0, Escobal 0, Hubalde 0.

    Quarters: 34-12, 64-35, 82-62, 106-77

    west to apologize to menor???

he doesn't have to sya ang na-agrabyado

BS yung explanation ni RG at triple V

I've heard what Mario West said during an interview with Jason Webb. He said that after the game he was rushing to the Air21 dugout just to see Menor and not to confront him but instead asks Menor what happen and also asks him if he's (menor) ok who apparently not in their duigout but having a coffee outside. But according to some air21 crews who tried to cover the door of air21 dugout, why is it that Mario West did not talk to these individuals who are covering the door and tell them that he just want to see Menor and asks him if he's ok?? But instead he is forcing his way to the dugout w/o saying anything......

Tinalon pa 'daw' ni West yung bar na nagse-separate sa magkabilang team para lang makita kung ok si Menor. Ganun sya ka-excited mag apologize kay Menor?

Yes, that's the sole logical answer - to avoid incurring a suspension from Salud brought about by his "invading" the Air 21 dugout after the game. Gregorio and Villavicencio realized that this could aggravate the circumstances that will lead to Salud's possible suspension on West.

My beef with this alibi though is that it's plain and simply BS and illogical. I don't know where that rationale came from. One thing they can be assured though, Salud has shown a lot of latitude and liberalism when it comes to these situations so I doubt if West would be suspended. A fine probably but not big enough to match the P10k slapped on Menor.

probably a summary of Menor's childish act in PBA :P

Mercado’s late eruption pulls Meralco past Powerade

Sol Mercado erupted for 15 points in the fourth period to lead Meralco to a 91-78 victory over Powerade in the PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Scoreless in the first three quarters, Mercado led the Bolts’ decisive rally to pull away from a tight game and notch their first back-to-back wins in the tournament.

“I just told him just to be patient. True enough, Powerade’s defense loosened up in the fourth quarter,” said Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio of his prized guard.

“It was a great win for us. With other teams falling down, we are encouraged that our destiny lies in our hands. We need a victory over Barako Bull on Sunday to have a clear passage and finally nail one of the six slots,” added Gregorio.

Mario West had another solid performance for the Bolts with 29 points and nine rebounds and was responsible for limiting Gary David, the PBA’s leading local scorer, to 20 points.

“Our import takes pride on defending,” said Gregorio. “I told him for the game, he’ll be guarding the best scoring local player in the league. But Gary David is not Tyreke [Evans], nor Dwayne Wade nor Lebron James. These are the players (West) used to guard in the NBA.”

David got his shooting rhythm in the third quarter, when he exploded for 11 points to put the Tigers within striking distance, trailing by only two points, 68-66, going into the fourth period.

But it was Mercado who stole the show in the final period, leading 16-3 exchange to build an 84-69 advantage for the Bolts with 4:22 remaining.

Powerade failed to respond, absorbing its second straight defeat that dropped its win-loss record to 4-4. The loss also ruined the return of Nic Belasco to the PBA.

The 38-year old Belasco had 4 points and 4 rebounds in 14 minutes for the Tigers. Omar Sneed led Powerade with 23 points and 17 rebounds.

NBA defensive stopper Mario West uses experience to slow down Gary David

NBA veteran and Meralco import Mario West has guarded some of the best players in the world.

“I’ve guarded Kobe [Bryant], [Kevin] Durant, and Carmelo [Anthony],” he told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

On Sunday, West used that experience to shadow the PBA’s best scorer, Gary David, and lead the Bolts to victory over the Powerade Tigers.

Meralco star guard Sol Mercado credited West’s defense for limiting David, who came into the game averaging better than 26 points per game.

“He blocked him twice and he was able to shut down Gary a lot of times,” said Mercado. “Mario was bigger, stronger and faster and he was successful in defending the top local scorer in the league. He won’t be able to play in the NBA if not for his defensive prowess. That was the main reason he was able to play in the big league.”

David scored 20 points, but had a difficult time because of West’s defense in the first half.

Still, West praised the Powerade superstar. “I like his game. He’s one of the best players in the league and he’s a good player coming off screens,” said West.

“But tonight, I tried to limit his touches as well as his production.”
