Bangkok-Nong Khai high-speed train project to be completed late 2015

BANGKOK, Nov 27 -- A high-speed train project, a planned joint investment project between Thailand and China, which will link between the Thai capital and Nong Khai province bordering Laos is expected to be completed in late 2015, said Supoj Saplom, permanent secretary for Thai Transport Ministry.

Mr Supoj said after a meeting of the working committee on Friday that the meeting had discussed on preparing a draft of memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the joint venture project. The draft is expected to be ready in early January next year and forward to the cabinet for its consideration later the same month before it is submitted to the parliament for its consideration and approval in February.

The parliamentary process is expected to be completed in March while construction could start in 2011 and furnished in late 2015, Mr Supoj said.

Initially, the Beijing investment on the project between the two countries will be on a 50-50 per cent basis while the Thai finance ministry is responsible on investment details of the project.

Two more senior Thai officials -- one from Finance Ministry and the other from Foreign Affairs Ministry -- have been appointed to join the working committee as the entire process involves a joint investment between the two countries.

Distance between Bangkok and Nong Khai is about 640 kilometres. Previously, the scheme involved on constructing a high-speed train with dual rail track at construction costs estimated at Bt180 billion. But the costs could be lower between 20-30 per cent after the system is switched to a standard gate high-speed train system. Upon completion, the rail system could lower goods transportation costs as well as boosting tourism between Thailand and Laos.

Thailand's joint parliamentary meeting on Oct 26 has approved a proposed draft framework of Thailand-China negotiations to construct a high-speed train system in Thailand.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva met his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao on Nov 12 and the latter agreed to speed up negotiations to construct a high-speed train system in Thailand.

The Chinese premier said the discussion should begin with the details of the routes and format of joint investment, according to Mr Abhisit. (MCOT online news)

im here in lp right now. about the train from nong khai to thanaleng hindi ko naabutan kasi delayed ang train from bangkok to nong khai. isa malayo pa rin ang thanaleng sa border entry ng laos kung mag bus ka. from nong khai sakay ka tuktuk mga 5 mins lang to thai immigration then mga 5 mins bus to laos immigration. then mga 20 minutes to vientiane proper.

but, malayo pa ang Vientiane city proper, mga 10-15mins away pa. so you need to take a shared van, or skylab (tuktuk).

^^dami palipat-lipat ng transpo, if via bus to Vientiane.

kasi kung via shuttle train, pagbaba mo ng station nandun na agad ang immigration ofc, and off you go to VTE town proper na by van/tuktuk.

please share some pics of LP

just wanna ask if 1 day in vientiane is enough to visit major attractions?

    my tentative iti will be...
day 1 sleeper train from bangkok to vientiane
day 2 whole day in vientiane then back to bangkok via sleeper train

    is this feasible? thank you.

I rent a bike. Love Laos, it's very laid back.Luang Prabang will always be the number one place in Laos. I spent expensive airfare just to see it and it's more than worthy.a UNESCO town, what else can I say? Bangkok Air or Lao Air flies daily from Bangkok.

quite expensive, indeed. no luang prabang for now but maybe some other time... when i have the luxury of time and budget. thanks for the info!

Hello Alice! I just went to Laos last month. And my answer to your question is Yes! Maliit lang naman ang Vientiane so I think one day would be enough to go around. We also went to Laos via the overnight sleeper train from Bangkok. But we spent 3 days in Laos kasi nagpunta pa kami sa Vang Vieng. Bale 2 days in Vang Vieng kami then 1 day kami sa Vientiane. After that bumalik na kami sa Bangkok also via the overnight sleeper train. I loved Laos! It's really worth visiting. I'm glad to hear you're also going there.

Pero within the city lang yan. I'm not sure kung magkano yung bayad kung mas malayo yung distance. I documented my trip to Laos by the way so if you wanna see some pics here are my posts about Laos:

All the best to your trip! And don't miss the French foods in Laos. Ang sasarap ng foods sa Laos. hehe

Thanks! Actually, nung nagpunta kami sa Bangkok bumili lang kami ng train tickets to Nong Khai on the day itself. We wanted to buy train tickets for a non-AC berth (only with fan para mas tipid) but we were informed that it was all sold out. Buti nalang may natitira pang AC berths kaya yun nalang ang binili namin. That's the reason why bumili na rin kami ng return tickets (Nong Khai-Bangkok) sa Hualumpong train station para sure na kami na may masasakyan kami pabalik ng Bangkok This time we got into a non-AC berth. But if you are not on a tight budget, then I think the AC-berth is a lot better and cleaner than the non-AC berth.

Andun ako sa Laos last late January.
