MANILA, Philippines—Mark your calendar—this year’s Independence Day will be President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Day.
The outgoing administration has laid out an elaborate set of activities for June 12, which, by all indications, all but threatens to push to the sidelines the primary spirit of the country’s 112th Independence Day celebration.
The highlight of the daylong celebration will be a 10-float parade costing about P10 million at the grounds of the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, Manila, to “showcase the outstanding achievements of the 10-Point Agenda of the Arroyo administration.”
Organizers will use the occasion as a last hurrah for Ms Arroyo, trumpeting the so-called achievements under her nine-year administration, according to the plan presented in Malacañang Tuesday.
