Mariah Just What Idol Needed: A Real Singer
Posted by Jonny on Tuesday, 24-Jul-2012, 7:21PM EDT

With the pop diva officially joining the aging competition, 'Idol' scores itself a wealth of credibility

Singer Mariah Carey finally validated weeks of rumors that she'd be joining Fox's long-running "American Idol" talent competition show when she revealed to reporters by speakerphone at the Television Critics Assn. press tour Monday morning that a deal had been finalized.

So what does this mean for the show that has already seen six judges, including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and multitasking pop diva Jennifer Lopez, vacate their posts over the years?

With Carey aboard, "Idol" scored itself a wealth of credibility for its 12th season, a particular credibility it's lacked from Day 1, by doing something incredibly simple: hiring a singer widely recognized for her singing.

When "Idol" debuted in 2002, the show cemented itself as a star maker after it crowned Kelly Clarkson its inaugural champ. And throughout its groundbreaking 10-year run, the singing competition has garnered stratospheric ratings and notched many hit songs for its star-studded legion of finalists, including Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia, Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson.

But for a show that's always been about finding a formidable vocalist, the judging panel has always skimped on offering a true vocalist to offer critique and artist development.

Nearly two years ago when Lopez signed on the dotted line, I analyzed why bringing her to the show was a good thing, which I will still defend.

Lopez, like the series' original sole female judge Paula Abdul, brought much-needed pop star pizazz to the series.

Lopez's arrival came at what was then the show's major tipping point: acid-tongued judge Simon Cowell had exited, ratings had dipped and the show had an incredibly awkward season that brought on comedian/talk show host Ellen DeGeneres as a judge and failed to excite viewers.

While Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson (who co-manages Carey's career and has long produced and played on her albums) offered the always valuable and appreciated industry perspective that would prepare finalists for the rigors of the music biz, a singing competition needs, well, a real singer.

In defense of Lopez joining the show, I have previously acknowledged she lacked the powerhouse pipes of her peers, something she's never hidden. But her prowess, which has afforded her an impressive chart profile, is that of a total package. That was always Lopez's strength -- she had the catchiest hooks, the edgiest looks and the best videos -- and she offered plenty of solid advice about harnessing that stage presence, often more deftly than her male counterparts.

But Carey, who has previously been one of the show's great guest mentors and had a week dedicated to her, offers a rarity to these competitions: bringing in a vocal giant with a wealth of experience when it comes to developing both star appeal and technical ability.

This is a combination that NBC's "The Voice" mastered when its American adaptation tapped Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee-Lo Green and Maroon 5's Adam Levine as judges/mentors. It's a factor that has always stunted "Idol's" full potential.

Despite "Idol" having proved itself a viable talent seeker, "The Voice," which has yet to find a star, is an aspiring singer's dream as it provides a genre-crossing roster of judges, who each bring on another superstar to help mentor contestants.

Sure, "Idol" has always been entertaining, but it's been hard for a lot of viewers to accept folks like Lopez, Abdul and DeGeneres offering vocal criticism.

Carey's track record outshines that of judges on other panels, including Aguilera and Britney Spears, who will make her judge debut on "Idol's" competitor, "X Factor," in the fall.

During her more than 22 - year career she's amassed 18 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, tying Elvis Presley among solo acts and just behind the Beatles, who had 20. With 63 million albums sold she is the No. 3 bestselling female artist in the U.S., according to the Recording Industry Assn. of America.

While 'Idol" helped bring Abdul back in front of the public eye, and gave Lopez's career a boost, Carey isn't in search of a "big comeback." That moment came with 2005's career - resuscitating "The Emancipation of Mimi."

Her last studio album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" opened at No. 3 and she went on her first tour since 2006. Carey then garnered rave reviews for her role in "Precious," notched another high-selling holiday album with 2010's "Merry Christmas II You" and launched clothing and perfume lines. Oh, yeah, like Lopez she also became a first-time mom when she gave birth to twins with husband Nick Cannon, who happens to hosts NBC's competition show "America's Got Talent."

"Idol" just scored a coup that could once again revive the aging competition. For those doubtful of how entertaining Carey will be on live television, just watch any of her deliciously over-the-top HSN appearances to see how loose and lively she gets without a script. Hopefully Fox puts champagne in her Coke cup for maximum fabulousness.

"Yay! I am so excited to be joining "Idol," the singer said in her brief remarks. America, you should be too.

Lyrical Advice for American Idol Contestants
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 25-Jul-2012, 11:18AM EDT

Many thanks to Rey Ann for letting us know about this cute blog entry from Metro Lyrics, which compiles what they imagine is Mariah's "lyrical advice" to "American Idol" contestants.

Mariah Carey is a singer, songwriter, mother of twins, and a known super-diva, so we imagine that for contestants auditioning in front of her on next season’s American Idol, it won't be a cakewalk. It's got to be pretty nerve-wracking performing in front of somebody with a five-octave vocal range and a two-decades long career but we’re here to offer you some advice straight from the horse's mouth (not that the adorable Mariah even remotely resembles a horse). Here are some pieces of advice Idol contestants should follow if they want to impress Mimi...

    1. (Don't) Touch My Body

The lyrics make it seem like Mariah's asking somebody to touch her body, but if you’ll recall the music video, it was all just a creepy fantasy in the mind of her tech-support guy. We don't recommend for contestants to touch Mimi, because she’s a glamorous and high-maintenance diva, ok?

    2. Don't act too Obsessed with her.

Listen, she knows she's adored by millions of people and that tons of guys and girls would kill to be with her, but as she states in her lyrics, don't be up on all the blogs sayin’ you met at the bar. Be respectful, courteous, and not too familiar. Also it'll help if your voice is really really good...

    3. Don't sing Hero

Ok, so this isn't exactly something Mariah has ever said not to do but think about it for a second: "Hero" has got to be the most overdone Mariah Carey song on any singing competition show ever, right? Plus, good luck measuring up to her killer pipes in that song.

    4. Do mention Butterflies

If you're a Mariah Carey fan then you will be familiar with her absolute obsession with butterflies. She has an album and a song named "Butterfly" and her logo incorporates the pretty insect. When you're telling the judges about your story, casually mention your transformation from a shy tween (perhaps liken the experience to being in a "cocoon") to a confident, shining singer/songwriter/butterfly. She'll eat it right up.

Mariah Carey Scene Will Open "The Butler"
Posted by Jonny on Wednesday, 25-Jul-2012, 4:05PM EDT

Lee Daniels’s "The Butler" started shooting yesterday in New Orleans. And there’s a lot of news I can tell you EXCLUSIVELY about this film starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. First of all, Quincy Jones has signed to compose the soundtrack. That's a big big deal. And now I've heard that Daniels will film a scene for the opening of the film with Mariah Carey and Vanessa Redgrave far removed from the White House setting of the rest of the film. It sounds pretty cool, but I’ve been asked not to give it away.

Mariah is already said to be complaining about her makeup, which - as in "Precious" - she will be de-glamourized. And there’s more: because Liam Neeson is shooting Paul Haggi'’s new film in Italy, he had to drop out of the role of Lyndon Johnson. So Liev Schreiber steps in. (The role of Lady Byrd is said to be minor.) And Olivia Washington, daughter of Denzel and Pauletta Washington, will make her screen debut as a civil rights activist. So far the only actress I'd like hear is in "The Butler" but isn't is LaTanya Richardson. Lee - find her a role!

"The Butler" will be Daniels’ first PG-13 movie after more adult fare with "Monster’s Ball," "Precious," and "The Paperboy," his wild new movie that opens this fall with an Oscar tipped performance by Nicole Kidman.

    Mariah's Idol Rider "Standard"
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 26-Jul-2012, 8:27AM EDT

From the New York Post regarding Mariah's American Idol rider:

A source close to Carey says she won't require anything out of the ordinary on Idol, and adds that the show itself has many of its own branded requirements for stars to use the products of certain sponsors. "It's all standard stuff, nothing out of the ordinary," the source said of Carey's Idol requirements. "It's not like they'll need to put a new roof on the building. It's standard lists, whether it's for water, soda, veggies, snacks. It's all fairly normal."

Ryan Seacrest to Mariah Carey: "You'll Fit Right In"
Posted by Jonny on Thursday, 26-Jul-2012, 11:41AM EDT

Simon Cowell may think Mariah Carey is too "sweet" for the rigors of "American Idol" judging, but that's not Ryan Seacrest's take on it at all.

"I actually called her last night and I said, 'So welcome to the family,'" the "Idol" host, who is assisting NBC with its Olympic coverage, told TODAY's Matt Lauer in London Thursday. "I said, 'What are you going to be like on the show? She said, 'You know how I am: I'm very honest. I say what I'm thinking.' I said, 'Great. You'll fit right in.'"

Carey will be taking the seat of departed Jennifer Lopez, and Seacrest said, "We're sad to see her go." But the big question now is who will take over the chair once occupied so flamboyantly by Steven Tyler.

"I've heard rumors of Brad Paisley, I've heard rumors of Pink, I've heard rumors about all kinds of people. And the way that it works is we read about the rumors and about an hour before it's confirmed I get a call saying, 'Guess who's on the show.'"

Nick Cannon: Mariah Will Be "Raw and Uncut" on Idol
Posted by Jonny on Friday, 27-Jul-2012, 8:00AM EDT

Watch out Simon, Mimi is about to be unleashed!

According to Nick Cannon, his wife and new American Idol judge Mariah Carey will be the most fierce face to ever sit at the judges' table - but even tougher than Simon Cowell?

"She's very serious about music and singing. She'll probably be the toughest judge that's ever been on [the] show," Nick told Access Hollywood backstage at Wednesday's America’s Got Talent.

In addition to her strong opinions, Mariah will also show off another not-often-seen side.

"She's going to be amazing... people don't know my wife's sense of humor," Nick continued. "They're about to get the whole Mariah Carey, raw and uncut! And see the woman that I fell in love with."

But will she drop the diva behavior, for example showing up to work on time - as ?Idol is a live show for a majority of the season?

"Nah, that ain’t happening," Nick joked. "It's Mariah Carey time!"

American Idol's Season 12 returns to FOX in January.
