First Official Set Photo from IRON MAN 3
Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release “Marvel’s The Avengers,” production on the highly anticipated film “Iron Man 3,” directed by Shane Black, has commenced production in Wilmington, North Carolina. The production schedule will also include locations in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Miami, Florida and China.
Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Iron Man 3” returns Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,”) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (“Iron Man 2”) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Happy Hogan. Set for release in the U.S. on May 3, 2013, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” marks the second feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.
“Iron Man 3” continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka “Iron Man.” Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz.
The creative production team on the film includes two-time Oscar®-winning director of photography John Toll, ASC (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”), production designer Bill Brzeski (“The Hangover,” “Due Date”), editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Peter S. Elliot (“Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), and costume designer Louise Frogley (“Quantum of Solace,” “Contagion”).
Marvel Studios most recently produced the critically acclaimed “Marvel’s The Avengers,” which set the all-time, domestic 3-day weekend box office record at $207.4 million. The film, which is currently in release, continues to shatter box office records and is The Walt Disney Studios’ highest-grossing global and domestic release of all time and marks the studios’ fifth film to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.
In the summer of 2011, Marvel successfully launched two new franchises with “Thor,” starring Chris Hemsworth, and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” starring Chris Evans. Both films opened #1 at the box office and have grossed over $800 million worldwide combined. In 2010 “Iron Man 2,” starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the #1 spot in its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million.
In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.” “Iron Man,” in which Robert Downey Jr. originally dons the Super Hero’s powerful armor and stars alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008, and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million in its opening weekend. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released “The Incredible Hulk,” marking its second number one opener of that summer.
‘Iron Man 3′ Character Details & Potential Post-Credits Scene Spoiler
As the poster boy character for Marvel Studios and the first franchise to continue the Marvel cinematic universe post-Avengers, Iron Man 3 has a lot to live up to. Its predecessor Iron Man 2 is the weakest film in the series, but with a new director, higher expectations (and a higher budget), Iron Man 3 promises to kickstart Phase 2 of the franchise in a big way.
While Marvel President Kevin Feige and writer/director Shane Black describe the film as a standalone story, not weighed down by forced story threads for the next Avengers film, that certainly doesn’t mean it won’t contain plenty of connective tissues and/or new characters and details to be used in future Marvel films.
On the second episode of The Playlist’s new podcast, writer Gabe Toro shared a pile of details regarding upcoming plans and ideas from Marvel Studios for the next several years, beginning with Iron Man 3 which launches next summer. All of what we will discuss further below can be considered: Read More...
Iron Man 3 Could Feature Earth-Shaking Action
Recently, a handful of behind-the-scenes photos from Iron Man 3 hit the social news-sharing site Reddit showing construction on the now-familiar set of Tony Stark’s mansion.
As you can see from one of the photos below (courtesy of Latino Review), the pictures themselves were not altogether exciting. However, the follow-up rumor (also courtesy of Latino Review) was.
According to a tipster, the entire mansion set is “actually built on a very sophisticated gimbals system.” To save you a quick Google search, here’s the definition of a gimbal: “A device consisting of two rings mounted on axes at right angles to each other so that an object, such as a ship’s compass, will remain suspended in a horizontal plane between them regardless of any motion of its support.”
Typically, gimbals are used in film to simulate sudden motion. By now, you should probably get the point, but just in case, LR’s tipster spells it out: “This is a set up for total destruction. How do you fight a superhero? Hit him in the most sacred place….his home. Villains of ‘Iron Man 3′ hit Tony Stark and hit him hard enough for his mansion to fall into the Pacific Ocean.”
Will it play out exactly like that? Maybe not, but it’s probably a safe bet that a big set piece in Iron Man 3 will take place at Stark’s home. What a shame, too, since he probably just got done redecorating from his fight with War Machine in Iron Man 2.
Iron Man 3 Concept Art Shows A Stunned, Smoking Tony Stark
Someone is getting the jump on Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in this concept art for Iron Man 3, which currently is shooting in Wilmington, N.C. The image was shared with Entertainment Weekly, which says posters made from this shot will be handed out to fans at San Diego Comic-Con beginning next week. But we have it for you below. Check it out:
Artist Ryan Meinerding is behind the piece, which shows Stark about to possibly do battle with … well, we don’t know yet. The men with machine guns aren’t wearing uniforms we recognize from the Iron Man word yet. And Tony’s only partially in costume, which suggests he’s in a section of his headquarters, where he’d have access to one of the many new suits we’re rumored to see in the upcoming sequel.
But why is the piece of armor on his arm smoking? Is it malfunctioning? Are we going to see a potential new delivery method for the Iron Man armor, similar to the suitcase suit in Iron Man 2 or the remote-controlled, body-fitting suit Stark unveiled in The Avengers?
No clue. At least, not yet. It is interesting how Downey Jr. simply is Stark at this point. I hardly remember what the character looked like in the pages of the various Iron Man titles prior to the actor being introduced as cinema’s modern Stark. They are forever joined at this point.
And Stark might forever be joined to his armor in Shane Black’s sequel. As we’re learned, Iron Man 3 will follow the Extremis storyline, where Stark injects himself with a serum that bonds his signature armor to his body. That could be what we’re seeing here. We’ll no doubt hear a lot more about Iron Man 3 when Marvel hosts its Comic-Con panel next Saturday. We’ll report back everything we hear. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on the concept art?
Iron Man 3 Brings Tony Stark's Armor To Comic Con
It began with the suit that Tony Stark made out of scraps while in captivity. Then he improved the design, giving it a nice, sleek look. The armor was the upgraded again with a red and gold paint job and became the classic Iron Man suit. From Iron Man through Avengers the famous Marvel character has worn a grand total of seven different suits, some of them simple upgrades to the normal design, others with the capability to fold into a suitcase or be attached to Tony's body automatically with the help of a fancy bracelet. The suit helped the superhero nab second place in our costume rankings from last week, and today every single suit has been put on display at San Diego Comic Con.
Tonight is preview night at the geek fest and when the convention floor opened to eager fans Marvel Studios greeted them with a full display of all seven previously worn Iron Man suits. Those of you who have been closely following the film's development may note the similarity between the set up they have in the convention center and the first official image that was released from the movie, and my guess is that it was no accident
Iron Man 3 brings back stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau and introduces Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, and James Badge Dale to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shane Black is directing and co-writing the movie with Drew Pearce. The film is currently in production and will be released on May 3, 2013.
Stan Lee's IRON MAN 3 Cameo Revealed
The lads at Latino Review have scored yet another Marvel related scoop, as they reveal that Stan "The Man" Lee will make one of his regular cameos in the third Iron Man movie as...
A beauty pageant Judge! Yes, apparently Shane Black's Iron Man 3 will feature a beauty pageant of some description - most likely the Miss Chattanooga Christmas Pageant judging from a recent set pic - at some point in the story. The site report that Lee shot his cameo scenes yesterday, Tuesday July 10th.
Lee made perhaps his most memorable cameo to date in The Amazing Spider-Man in which he appeared as a school janitor listening to music on his headphones, oblivious to the Spidey/Lizard battle raging around him. Before that he was set to appear in a full scene with Chris Evans (Captain America) in The Avengers before it ended up on the cutting room floor. He appears only briefly in a montage at the end of the theatrical cut.
Vague New Potential IRON MAN 3 Scene Details
In addition to mild scene spoilers, a few set photos from multiple filming locations of North Carolina have been revealed for Marvel's Iron Man 3 anticipated installment! Check it out!
Gearing up for promotion at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Marvel's Iron Man 3 movie continued filming today in the small town of Kenansville, North Carolina. Beyond today's shoot, in which scenes involve a "Miss Chattanooga Christmas Pageant" at a Hamilton County Memorial Hall, I have stumbled across a few details for multiple upcoming shoots; potential spoilers ahead.
According to Star News Online, filming next week is expected pick up in Oak Island, North Carolina. And the town manager, Tom Hogg, seems to know what the scenes will involve. “As I understand it, filming will be of people jumping out of perfectly good airplanes,” he said. In addition, Twitter/Instagram user Seanaldo86 stumbled across some "odds and ends" from the set while filming was underway in Wilmington.
As the prop label reveals (picture above), it seems one of Tony Stark's high-rides wheels will be swiped from him. Could these be apart of a bigger plot in the movie? Most likely. What do you think?

The Mandarin Confirmed As Iron Man 3 Villain
Marvel Studios is proving why they are the top dog when it comes to Hall H presentations (and why Robert Downey Jr. is the undisputed King of Comic-Con). Downey took to the stage to present Iron Man 3 footage, which Eric will recap in great detail in his live blog (it looked amazing), there was one huge news: Sir Ben Kingsley is playing The Mandarin.
The explosive footage that they showed concluded with shots of Kingsley’s hands wearing the rings. Then it pulls back a little bit further to show the actor stroking his grey beard. Then he ***** a handgun, even though he’s sitting in an Oriental chair. It’s very quick, but it confirms what we expected. Kingsley is The Mandarin in Iron Man 3.
“We’re halfway done,” Black confirmed on the shoot, then calling Kingsley “lovely” and doing a great Sir Ben impersonation. “This guy is The Mandarin.”
Stephanie Szostak Rounds Out IRON MAN 3 Cast
It seems the latest addition to the cast of Marvel's Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 installment has been revealed, amid SDCC, to be French Dinner for Schmucks actress Stephanie Szostak.
Apparently exclusive footage and plot details surrounding Marvel's anticipated Iron Man 3 film isn't the only thing revealed amid San Diego Comic-Con. Deadline has quoted The Devil Wears Prada French-American actress Stephanie Szostak disclosing that she has a role in the Shane Black-directed threequal.
“It’s a thrill to be part of the incredible Iron Man franchise,” she said. “Production has been incredibly exciting.”
As of now, there's no word on who the actress will be playing. Anyhow, Stephanie Szostak has also appeared in Dinner for Schmucks, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and The Sopranos. And she recently landed a role in the upcoming R.I.P.D movie opposite Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. What do you think she'll play?

New ‘Iron Man 3′ Set Photos: Tony Stark Flies to the Rescue
The photos that have been snapped on the Iron Man 3 set have, on the whole, hinted at a a lot of problems for Tony Stark in this threequel. Without spoiling anything, we’ve seen former Iron Man friends being given a fresh makeover, as well as set equipment that indicated – before it was confirmed by concept art and Comic-Con 2012 footage – that Stark’s Malibu home was going to be undergoing some pretty destructive renovation when the bad guys came calling.
Today we have new Iron Man 3 set photos, and they seem to indicate that the criminal organization Tony is up against will be wreaking havoc all over the place – even in the sky. scroll down if you want to know more – but be warned POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOLLOW!!!
These photos seem to capture a scene in which Iron Man is flying through the air carrying a bunch of people he’s saved – people in business suits, military uniforms and airline personnel outfits. This suggests that some important airborne object – Latino Review is speculating it could even be Air Force One – will be under attack by the now-confirmed Mandarin’s (Ben Kingsley) forces, which will include cybernetically enhanced henchmen played by James Bade Dale and Ashley Hamilton.
Check out the images below:
The Iron Man 3 Comic-Con 2012 panel has shown us that director Shane Black definitely has something different in mind for the threequel; early rumors we heard that it would be something more akin to a high-concept espionage film, rather than a standard superhero film, seem to be accurate in the best way possible. We say all that to say: feel free to set the bar of expectation high for this Marvel movie.
Iron Man 3 will in theaters on May 3, 2013.
