Review: Men In Black 3 (2012)

“Men in Black 3” comes 15 years after its original installment and 10 years after its sequel where nobody ever expected to get a follow up after. I, for one did not. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant reminder that Will Smith is still very much alive to do movies.

This third film based on Lowell Cunningham's comic series had Agent J (Will Smith) travels back to 1969 where he met the younger Agent K (played this time by Josh Brolin.) His mission is to stop the alien criminal Boris from assassinating the young Agent K that would change the course of history.

I am not a fan of the franchise but I remember enjoying the first two films somehow. I just loved the dynamics between Smith and Jones in the previous installments. This time though, Smith does not have a lot of sequences with Jones, which is a shame because they really have a great chemistry. Brolin isn't a bad replacement though; he's pretty quick and spot-on as the younger Agent K.

Another problem I have was the establishment of Agent O's (Emma Thompson) character (also played by Alice Eve.) The scenes were not enough to establish K's softer side for "them." Jemaine Clement who played Boris the animal was a-okay. He was "fierce" enough I guess but does little to be a threatening villain.

This film also goes a little backward in terms of special effects that it almost seemed unreal. I don't know maybe it just me or it's the effect of 3-D but it felt distant somehow. The film isn’t bad at all but it’s missing the spark of the previous installments that may have made the film a bit lackluster in providing a spectacular comeback sequel.

    Rating: 7/10

    Director: Barry Sonnenfeld

So far, the best MIB series. The creativity, the story, everything. At first I was like 'it would be another alien killing movie with comedy twist' but it exceeded my expectation. Total worth the money, total worth the time. Movies nowadays are brilliantly formulated. Worth an Oscar award

    ganda ng mib, kakatouch.

The alien-related comedic scenes were corny as expected (never really found the green lizard thingies or Frank the Pug funny) but Josh Brolin's portrayal of K was spot on and hilarious. The ending was also good (and a major tearjerker) and makes you re-evaluate the events of the first MIB.

    My lips are a 25.
The effects look like a bad B movie, but I appreciate the retro-ness of the aliens in 1969. Sequined space suits? Of course!

Also, the ending puts this series into full circle, making you appreciate the J and K's bond even more.

Better than I expected! Agree Josh Brolin's performance was good, spot on Tommy Lee Jones but not a caricature!

And yeah the ending was predictable for me but the execution definitely moved me, didn't expect that.

Just finished watching the movie. Great twist at the end. I like the Griffin character the best. Ang galing ni Josh Brolin as the young K!

As usual, with all time travel movies na napanood ko, lagi akong nalilito.

But I still liked the movie.

Yung Boris na kalaban ni J is yung 1969 Boris kaya di pa niya alam mag time travel nun, until Boris met Obadiah...[spoiler end]

I enjoyed this and had more fun than I initially thought I would. What I really like about these Men in Black movies is that the whole premise is so "out there" that it's easy to buy into the movie's absurd story and Men in Black 3 continues this trend.

I am a sucker for Time Traveling plots and Men in Black 3 has a lot of fun with this. I like the 60's retro look from the automobiles, to the hair, and the costumes.

Also brilliant casting by having Josh Brolin as the young "K". Watching No Country for Old Men you could kind of see the similarities in tone and demeanor with both Brolin and Jones so it was nice for MIB3 to play around and experiment this and what they got was Brolin perfectly nailing Tommy Lee Jones' "K".

Some of the plot twists were pretty cool as well, though I think the film took itself a little too dramatic and seriously at that point.

Like the other MIB film's it's never about the climax but its about the mystery of solving a riddle to get to the story's final destination. In other words I had more fun earlier on than I did at the end of MIB3.

Still I had a blast with MIB3. It's a movie that easily sells the idea pure fun and entertainment.

    B
