at 9 months - your child should be able to make sounds kahit hindi intelligible. these are called vocalizations (aaaah, oh, eee). after that babbling naman (adadadada, abababa, etc.) by 1 year of age, the child should be able to say "dada", "mama" or "papa" or any two-syllable word. and yes, if a child is normally developing, more words are learned while he grows older. by 2 years old dapat mga -word sentences kaya na niya kahit medyo bulol. example - "mama, bas ako" (mama labas ako).
pero children have different rates of developing so just because your child cannot say 1 word at 1 year old ay abnormal na siya or may developmental delay. merong mabilis ang development, merong slow and then later bibilis.
plus, verbal or spoken language is just one aspect of development that we look at in assessing whether a child is developing well or not. there is a thing called Receptive Language which looks at whether the child has normal comprehension. does he understand what you ask him to do even if he cannot speak? does he use gestures or non-verbal forms of communication such as pointing? these are under receptive language.
you seem worried. what can your child do at this point?

My older daughter was still speaking her own language at that age
As long as he is babbling and trying to imitate sounds, that should be ok... just keep talking to him, tell him what things he's playing with or looking at are called, and don't park him in front of the TV but engage him in active conversations even if his responses are still gibberish![]()
also... run commentariesas you go about taking care of him, talk about what you're doing and why and what's next etc
he will get used to the sound of the words and it will help later when he's ready to verbalize himself

My son is 2 and a half years old and he still won't talk.I mean, I know he knows how to say 'mama' because he does (rarely though, and just to get a giggle out of me, I'm sure) but that's it. I'm just waiting patiently. X3
I was supposed to make a thread about this too, yung nephew ko (my kuya's kid) is turning 2 thus coming july nagwo-worry din ako kasi di pa rin siya nagsasalita. Though as aileenedms said, my nephew is already making some "babbling" sounds.
nakikipagusap siya sa amin pointing at things with his babbling talk as if he's trying to say or tell us something hehe.
Iba iba talaga ang developments ng bata. Kaya mahirap din magcompare. The pedia naman should be able to answer your questions regarding sa dev't ni baby.
May mga nagsasabe na pag babae, mas mabilis matuto magsalita than boys.
It would help kung laging nakakausap yung baby para meron cia palageng ginagaya.
kaya ako na worry kasi pedia nya ng bring up netong concern na to hay.. sabi nya bakit daw hindi na dagdag dagaan yun mga spoken words ni baby ko mama papa... yaya ganun lang.... hay... next pa ulit check up namin kaya na praning me ...
he could point to things that he wants and pag inutusan not lagi but most of the time ginagawa naman
he do some baby sign language that's how he communicate with us
he sign for book, milk, flowers, water etc...
hay.... buhay talaga ng isang ina ehehhe
according to my pedia by 1 yr the baby should already have at least 10 words. then by 2 yrs he/she should be already putting words together into a phrase like "want milk". if you're worried you should ask your pedia, mother's instinct is really spot on sometimes![]()
my nephew (turning 2 years old this coming July 23) already knows a few words and sounds already haha.
he can say "daddy", "Ellie" a character from Pocoyo. He can also imitate the sounds of dogs, cats, monkeys, snakes and cows haha. But for his "conversations" with us he still does the babbling talk
so adorable! how time flies. they grow up so fast!
