Yet I still do not believe in zero corruption. Rather, I believe in the need to bring down corruption in public office to manageable level, let's say at par with the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Finland).

If we'll look at the 2009 Corruption Perception Index as issued by Transparency International, not even New Zealand (which has been the least corrupt country for quite some time now) was able to score a perfect ten.

But granted for the sake of discussion that zero corruption is possible. I bet that even if we give Noynoy his six sweet years, he still would not be able defeat corruption. No president can, not even by candidate Nick Perlas. Look, not even the 209 years of political history of the Cojuangco's and Aquino's made a difference. Why? That's because corruption is not a political problem. It's a cultural problem. And being such, it's not just a president's mission. It's everyone's mission. And for sure, it will take generations, not just a term or two.

The president is just here to lead. Unfortunately, a president only got six years to lead by example.

I don't want to grill the Cojuangco's and Aquino's too much. As far as corruption is concerned, may kasalanan din tayo mismong mga ordinaryong Pinoy. Yet for any candidate to claim that he/she can make zero corruption happen in six years (if it's attainable in the first place) is downright utopian.

And for me, making utopian promises to grab the wow of those who cannot distinguish dreamy claims from realistic ones is a form of corruption.

Why I am going to give him my vote?

1. He first proposed a study now, pay later program. I was thinking of this for years already and up until Gibo said it, no one dared to open up this idea.

2. He proposed to give a limited, but autonomous power to self-sustaining regions. This is needed, so that the national government can focus more on the depressed regions of the country.

3. He's more open to contemporary and modern means of giving progress to this country.

4. He is not walking behind the Aquino-Cojuancgo shoes. You won't top the BAR just by merely being a part of the clan. You won't handle the DND post, by the young age of 40, just by being a part of the yellow family.

5. The damn character. The goddamn campaign. He's just standing up straight, not bowing to the piles of mud thrown straight to his face.

Nicky Perlas is still a lost cause, he still needs to have that executive experience. I did not choose him because I don't want the presidential seat to be his training ground. But I bet he can be one of the real deals this country needs to progress.
