THE RITE OF INFANT BAPTISM ADMINISTERED BY A BISHOP
source:forum.catholic.org
The INFANT is being baptised! Keep that in mind.
Bishop: asking the infant Name, "What do you ask of the Church of God?"
Godparent: Faith.
Bishop: Still asking the infant, "What does Faith offer you?"
Godparent: Life everlasting.
...
The Bishop, still wearing his mitre, blows gently into the child’s face, and says:
Go forth from him (her), unclean spirit, and give place to the Holy Spirit.
He traces the sign of the cross with his thumb upon the child’s forehead and breast, saying:
Receive the sign of the cross upon your X forehead and upon your X heart. Know that you are bound now by a heavenly rule of life, and let your conduct henceforth prove you fit to be a living temple of God.
Then, wearing his mitre, the Bishop touches the child’s ears and nostrils with his right thumb (moistened with saliva) and as he touches first the right and then the left ear he says:
Ephpheta, which is: Be thou open.
Then he touches the nose, saying:
To the sweet fragrance about you. As for thee, evil spirit, get thee gone; for God's judgement is upon thee.
Then he enters the baptistery followed by the godparents with the child. There, seated at the font, he addresses the child by name:
N., do you believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
Godparent: I do believe.
Bishop: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was born into this world and who suffered for us?
Godparent: I do believe.
Bishop: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting?
Godparent: I do believe.
Bishop: Emily, are you willing to be baptised?
Godparent: I am.
While the godparent hold the child the Bishop, wearing his mitre, takes baptismal water and pours it thrice over her head in the form of a cross, at the same time saying once only, distinctly and with attention:
N., I baptise thee in the name of the X Father and of the X Son, and of the Holy X Spirit
So, who was baptised? The child or the godparent?
