Daniel Matsunaga set on bid to gain Filipino citizenship


Daniel Matsunaga’s heart belongs to the Philippines.

Since the Brazilian-Japanese hunk started working in the Philippines four years ago, first as a model and then also as an actor, he has often expressed his wish to become a Filipino citizen. Now, more than ever, he wants to live here for good.

“I really love this country, and I said it before, gusto ko maging Pinoy kahit wala akong Filipino blood. I may have a working permit but I reallty want to have that Filipino citizenship. I’ve been working on it and hopefully, they will allow me to be one,” he says.

Daniel already has roots in the country, courtesy of his sister, who is also a sought-after model.

“Aside from the fact that I am a resident here, I have a Filipino family already. My sister Vanessa married a Filipino two years ago. She’s now Vanessa Matsunaga-Sunga.

“It’s like my life is already here. My career is here and I want my whole family to live here. I miss Brazil, but I found a new home in the Philippines. I am praying that I would be able to fix everything in order to gain that citizenship,” he declares.

Until early this year, he thought he was on his way to taking after his sister. He had assumed his romance with actress Heart Evangelista was headed for the altar, which would have automatically qualified him for naturalization.

But the relationship suddenly soured, leaving Daniel famously heartbroken. For a while it also made him reconsider if he wanted to continue his career in the Philippines or just sulk and go back to Brazil.

But he soon realized that he loves this country too much. So he picked himself up and rededicated himself to his career.

He says now: “It was kinda good that it happened to my life. Kasi ngayon, single ako, I am very much more focused and everything. “I’ve moved on. Okey na ako. There are many opportunities for me to do, and I don’t want to turn all of that down just because I was heartbroken.

“I don’t want people to say that I gave up when a girl gave up on me. I want them to see na okey ako. I’m still alive and I am happy now.”

Surprisingly, Daniel is proud to say that he has remained on good terms with his ex-girlfriend. “We keep in touch. We’re not like enemies, we’re friends. Everything is fine naman with us,” he clarifies.

Nevertheless, he feels being single suits him. “No dating for me. It’s been a long time but it’s okay. I want to stay single muna. I want to focus on my work. I’m happy being by myself for now.”

Daniel has plenty of reasons to feel happy on the career front. Ever since he signed a non-exclusive contract with the Kapatid network two months ago, his television career has never been better.

Daniel is on three shows: the Sunday game show “Game ‘N Go”, the supernatural suspense thriller “Third Eye” and the fantasy series “Enchanted Garden”. He is practically on TV5 every day!

“Hindi naman the whole week—wala akong show sa Saturday. That is my rest day. I spend more time sa gym on Saturdays naman,” the model-turned-actor smiles.

He’s defininitely happier now with the opportunities that TV5 is giving him. He is honing not just his acting chops but his hosting skills as well.

“Masayang-masaya ako. Siyempre, ang daming opportunities. Ang daming tapings. Wala akong tulog, pero okey lang…masaya. Siyempre, bagong experience rin sa buhay ko, and I’m learning a lot. And I’m getting better, even ‘yung Tagalog ko. I am improving a lot every day.”

Asked to compare his current situation with his lot in GMA, Daniel says things are a lot different these days.

“GMA-7 has given me also a lot of opportunities. I started with them and I am thankful na nakilala ako because of what GMA-7 did to me.

“Pero dito sa TV5, it’s really amazing. They offered me a non-exclusive contract with guarantee. No words to say how happy I am dahil dami ng work ngayon,” he says.

Back in GMA, he was part of the cast of “The Last Prince”, “Grazilda”, “Langit Sa Piling Mo”, “Machete” and “Futbolilits”. But he remembers spending the majority of his time attending workshops.

“Dami kong workshops like ‘yung Tagalog, acting, singing, guitar. And in the shows I did, halos wala akong dialogue,” he says.

Daniel realizes those workshops helped him prepare for the challenges that he now faces regularly as a TV5 talent.

“I had a great time with GMA-7. I will always regard them as my first family in showbiz.
“But I have to move on and I found my second family with TV5. Masaya ako dito and I am thankful for the projects they are giving me,” he says.
