DanieL Matsunaga: Another Brapanese Makes Big SpLash in the LocaL ModeLing Scene

Three months ago, practically nobody in the Philippines had heard of the name Daniel Matsunaga. But his life changed after he appeared in Cosmopolitan Magazine's 2009 Cosmo Men supplement in September, wearing nothing but a naughty smirk.



His bold stint in Cosmo obviously caught the eye of Pinoys. Daniel now boasts a slew of commercials, print ads, and runway shows that any newbie would envy.



For his first TV exposure, he shared the screen with KC Concepcion in Close Up. Subsequently, he starred in a recent Sun Cellular commercial, and showed off his ripped upper body for the latest Solmux campaign.



It all began when Daniel was contacted by local agency Mercator Model and Artist Management. Daniel, along with his sister and fellow model Vanessa, jetted to the country to try their luck.



"I came because I heard that there's a good market for acting and there are better opportunities for models," the three-fourths Brazilian, one-fourth Japanese looker tells Cosmo.ph (click here for the interview). "The market is [more] open for commercials and better jobs than some other countries in Asia and Europe."



Daniel immediately felt at home in Manila. "It's nice place, nice weather. I like this rainy weather. It looks like Brazil sometimes." And, the people here are "very nice."



Daniel is a well-traveled model. "I've been to Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Holland, LA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Indonesia... everywhere!" he related. Manila is the latest pit stop in his long list of modeling milestones.



The hot Brapanese was actually a professional football player in Hong Kong, but for now, he'd like to focus on modeling. "Modeling [comes] first, 'cause I'm trying to do acting later. I'm learning Tagalog. I'm taking lessons. Football is just a second option if it doesn't happen."



Turning only 21 this month, Daniel certainly looks like he has a long, bright modeling career ahead of him!

Sinama sa malaking cast ng The Last Prince ang Japanese-Brazilian model na si Daniel Matsunaga. Una siyang nakilala sa isang toothpaste commercial kunsaan ka-partner niya si KC Concepcion. Ngayon ay naglalakihan ang mga billboards niya sa EDSA para sa isang mobile network at gamot para sa ubo.



Isang prinsipe na nagiging werewolf ang role niya sa The Last Prince at makaka-love triangle niya sina Aljur Abrenica at Kris Bernal. Nakapag-taping na si Daniel ng episodes at natuwa naman ito dahil first TV show niya ito sa Pilipinas.



"I thank God for everything and I want to say thank you to the people of GMA-7 for giving me this opportunity. I know it's very hard for them to consider me to be part of this, but they gave me the opportunity to work here. Thanks for trusting me.



"In The Last Prince, I play Prince Nicolai. I can be good but I can also be bad. I will be acting together with Aljur and he's okay. We've worked together before, last year in the Cosmo Bachelor event. He was number one, right?



"He's a great guy and I had the opportunity to talk with him and his partner Kris Bernal. They are both very nice people and very helpful.



"Kris, by the way, is a very nice girl. I met her when I had my second- day taping for the show. She is very friendly, very nice and such a beautiful girl," sey pa ni Daniel.



ACTING CHOPS. Pinaarte nga raw kaagad si Daniel sa unang TV role niya bilang werewolf na mai-in love kay Kris.



"In my role, I need to control my anger or else I turn into a werewolf. And it's a very bad werewolf. I need to rely on what I know in acting since I have been doing commercials.



"But when I get to meet Lara [played by Kris], things changed. It has something to do with love. But then, Prince Almiro [played by Aljur] will be the one to interfere. They have to watch the show to see what happens to the three of us."



Noong una siyang nagtrabaho sa Pilipinas, puro TV commercials and print ads ang ginawa niya. Ngayon ay bukod sa The Last Prince, kinukuha pa siyang mag-guest sa iba't ibang shows ng GMA-7.



"I get to meet new friends by working here. I really don't know a lot of people here. I only know people who I work with. Now that I am part of a TV series, I gain new friends and it helps me not to miss my family back in Brazil.



"I always miss my family when I work here or in any country. I always make sure that I go back to my family and spend time with them before I work again in another continent."



FEELS LIKE HOME. Nagsimula ang modeling career ng 21-year-old noong 15 pa lang siya. May older sister siya na modelo rin at nakapagtrabaho na rin sa Pilipinas.



Sa pamamagitan ng pagmomodelo ay nakarating na si Daniel sa iba't ibang bansa tulad ng Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Amsterdam, Germany, Paris and Spain para mag-photo shoot para sa iba't ibang magazines at fashion campaigns.



Nakarating si Daniel sa Manila nang papuntahin siya rito ng kanyang agency na Mercator (the same agency that manages Akihiro Sato, JC Tiuseco, Lemuel Pelayo and Victor Basa) at kaagad niyang nagustuhan ang Pilipinas.



"Manila is like home to me. It's an amazing place. The weather is amazing and the people are very nice just like in Brazil. Sometimes I feel that I'm in Rio de Janeiro."



Sinisikap ni Daniel na makapagsalita ng Tagalog. Nakapag-aral na siya sa ilang classes at nakapagsasalita na siya ng ilang Tagalog words. Malaking tulong daw iyon para sa kanyang pagpasok sa showbiz.

Latest addition sa cast ng The Last Prince ang guwapong Brazilian-Japanese model na si Daniel Matsunaga.



First acting role sa isang series ito ni Daniel na unang nakilala sa Close Up TV commercial ni KC Concepcion, at sa pag-rampa nang shirtless sa Cosmo Bachelor Bash.



Sa The Last Prince, gagampanan ni Daniel ang papel na Prince Nicholi.



"I can be good, I can be bad, it depends," ang sabi niya tungkol sa role.



Excited siya dahil half-human, half-wolf ang papel na gagampanan niya rito, tulad ng character ni Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black sa Twilight saga, at sabik na siyang gamitin ang werewolf prosthetics niya.



"This is really something new for me," sabi niya. "I hope that I have the opportunity to make everybody happy with my work."



Bukod sa pagmomodelo, ambisyon talaga ni Daniel na maging isang aktor din, kaya nagpupursigi siyang mag-aral ng Tagalog.



Pero, paganda man nang paganda ang karanasan niya dito, inamin din niyang nami-miss na niya ang pamilya niya sa Brazil. Kaya kapag nagkaroon ng bakante ang kanyang schedule, uuwi muna siya para magbakasyon, pero saglit lamang daw at babalik muli sa Pilipinas para harapin ang kanyang acting and modeling careers.

Sa set ng The Last Prince, may bulung-bulungan nang nagseselos raw si Aljur Abrenica whenever Kris Bernal would shoot scenes with ModeL-Actor DanieL Matsunaga.

"Seloso ka pala 'no?" Natatawang biro ni Kris sa kanyang leading man na si Aljur. "Hindi kasi kita sa prosthetics mo e."

Pero meron nga ba dapat pagselosan si Aljur sa kanyang karibal sa The Last Prince?

Aljur: "Ewan ko nga e. Parang natutuwa nga [si Kris] kapag kasayaw si Daniel."
Kris: “Ito naman, ang arte. Si Daniel kasi—"
Aljur: "Gusto niya talaga!"

Inaamin naman ni Kris na may crush siya kay Daniel kahit noong pang nag-cover siya ng isang event last year for Showbiz Central, the same event kung saan pinagkaguluhan si Aljur. At nilinaw ni Kris, "crush lang. Paghanga lang po," ang naramdaman niya para kay Daniel noon.

Nilinaw din ni Kris na gustong-gusto lang raw siyang asarin ni Aljur.

Nang akusahan si Aljur na hindi naman 'to nagseselos sa kanyang on-screen karibal, mahinang sumagot ang aktor: "kasi nasa eksena si [Daniel] e. Mamaya, wala ka na naman sa akin."

Na siya namang sinagot ni Kris ng: "ang kulit. Kaya pala kapag ka-eksena ko si Daniel, hindi siya tumitingin masyado. Wala siya sa eksena."

Pero ano nga ba ang totoo sa dalawa? Kris teases, puwede niyo raw tanungin sa kanila sa kanilang live chat! That's this February 2, 2010, mula alas-2 hanggang alas-4 ng hapon.

Dalawang bagay ang masasabing claim to fame ng Brazilian-Japanese model na si Daniel Matsunaga. Una, ang Close Up TV commercial ni KC Concepcion, kung saan siya ang leading man ng aktres. Pangalawa, ang pinag-usapang pagrampa nito nang shirtless bilang isa sa mga hunks sa Cosmo Bachelor Bash kamakailan.



Nang magkaroon ang PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ng pagkakataon na makausap siya, ang kanyang bungad ay ang pagkakatulad niya sa kaibigan at co-Mercator model na si Akihiro Sato. Ang sabi ni Daniel, "My mom si Brazilian and my dad is Japanese. I'm a Brapanese!"



Dagdag pa niya, "I've been here in the Philippines for three months, it's my first time. Nice place, nice weather."



Napadpad niya sa Pilipinas dahil sa isang social networking site. "My agency, Mercator, they just contacted me thru the Facebook," ang simpleng kuwento ng 21-year old male model.



WORKING WITH KC. Siyempre, inusisa namin si Daniel tungkol sa paggawa niya ng TVC with KC.



Ang description niya sa Kapamilya actress, "She's nice, very pretty and very friendly. I first saw her in person in the shoot."



Bago sila nag-shoot, ani Daniel, kilala na niya si KC bilang isang sikat na celebrity sa Pilipinas. Madalas na rin daw makita ni Daniel ang mga photos ng dalaga sa mga magazines.



"Yes, even in the casting, they told me there was this girl, a superstar here, and that we will be together in the commercial. I was like, 'Oh, really?'" ang pagpapatuloy niya.



Given the chance, liligawan ba niya si KC?



Ang matipid ngunit mabilis niyang sagot: "Of course, who wouldn't?"



COSMO BACHELOR. Inusisa rin ng PEP kung paano nakapasok ang baguhang tulad niya sa prestigious list ng Cosmo Men centerfolds.



Aniya, "I did casting and audition. I had to work with them for a magazine shoot, then I did pictures with them, and they liked me and they asked me to do a centerfold."


Hindi pa man siya gaanong kilala, napatili na ang mga tao sa NBC Tent sa The Fort, Taguig City, noong rumampa siya sa Cosmo Bash noong ika-10 ng Setyembre.



"I was wearing jeans, I just removed the top. We were supposed to be guys who just came from prison. It was really nice, a different experience for me, and it was really, really crazy."



Ang modeling career ni Daniel ay nagsimula sa Brazil, kung saan modelo rin ang nakatatandang kapatid.



"I was a model, I started 15, too young, e! I started in Brazil around 15 and outside Brazil, I started at 16. [My sister] started first, then I followed her steps. She's older, she's 23, she's also here in the Philippines right now."



At dahil sa pagmo-modelo, naikot na ni Daniel ang maraming lugar sa iba't ibang panig ng mundo, tulad ng Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Amsterdam, Germany, Paris at Spain.



AMAZING MANILA. At kahit malayo siya ngayon sa bayang kinalakhan niya, masaya si Daniel. Manila raw "feels like home."



"It's an amazing place, amazing weather, amazing people...[It] feels like home, feels like Brazil sometimes, like Rio de Janeiro. It really looks like the same. Everybody's nice, just like in Brazil, everybody's feeling great. Sao Paulo is like Makati."



Good news para sa mga kababaihan, ver-r-ry single and unattached si Daniel.



Kuwento niya sa PEP, "I don't have a girlfriend. Before I had, she's Brazilian, she's a model also, she's in Brazil. I don't have anymore."


Another good thing, hindi rin daw imposible kung kung Filipina ang susunod niyang girlfriend.



A TASTE OF LOCAL SHOWBIZ. Isa ring Brazilian ang una niyang nakatrabaho sa telebisyon, model-host na si Daiana Menezes.



Nagkakilala na raw sila dati sa isang modeling gig. "We met in Thailand in 2005 when I went to Thailand, she was also modeling there that time. Here, we did a TV show [guesting], we had to dance in Eat Bulaga."



Isang Brazilian dish naman ang nagbigay-daan sa kanya upang makapag-guest sa isang show. "I also cooked in a TV show, I cooked a Brazilian dish in the Sweet Life show," aniya.



MORE DETAILS ABOUT DANIEL. Football ang kanyang sport.



"I used to play professional football in Hong Kong and Brazil, all my life I played football. I stayed in Hong Kong for two years to model, I stayed there the longest, I was eighteen years old then."



Tatlo silang magkakapatid: "I have a sister, who is also a model; and a brother in Brazil, he's 16, he's studying."



Hindi pa raw siya nakakatapos ng college, at may plano siyang ipagpatuloy ang kanyang pag-aaral.



Bukod sa pagiging modelo, ambisyon din ni Daniel na maging isang aktor.



"I like to act as well. I'm learning Tagalog as well. I just had six lessons, just the basics, like kumusta, mabuti, bukas, ngayon, kahapon, magandang gabi."



At nang tanungin siya tungkol sa mga paborito niyang showbiz personalities: "I like Robin Williams, Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie. I like Will Smith."



Hindi pa alam ni Daniel kung gaano katagal siyang mamamalagi sa Pilipinas. Depende raw ito sa mga opportunities na darating sa kanya. "It depends on the job. I'm sure I'm going to stay here for a while coz I still have a lot of plans," pagtatapos ni DanieL.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HIM: Romancing KC Concepcion for a Close Up toothpaste ad (a job he snagged the first week he got here); acting refreshed (while conveniently baring his chest) in TV ads and MRT billboards for Solmux chewable tablets; enjoying Nova multigrain snacks; and a host of other assignments. WHERE HE COMES FROM: DanieL grew up in BraziL, the capital of Brazil. Daniel calls it a “monumental” city because of the city’s monuments, saying that “the history of Brazil is in Brasilia.” The son of a half-Japanese father and pure Brazilian mother, Daniel has a brother and a sister (with whom he travels on his modeling assignments around the world). And, sorry to tell you ladies out there, his girlfriend is also part of his entourage.

HOW HE BECAME A MODEL: His sister Vanessa, who started modeling first, got him into the business at age 15, when her agent spotted him at his high school. At 16, he started traveling to Europe, South Africa, and Asia, putting his dreams of becoming a biologist on hold. One passion he has not let go: soccer. At one point, he was a professional soccer player in Hong Kong. “I’ve been playing since I was in my mom’s tummy,” Daniel laughs.

WHY MANILA? Originally, when Daniel arrived in Manila, he saw it as just another stop, no different than any other modeling market like Bangkok or Holland. But when his face started appearing on television and billboards, he was amazed at how quickly people picked up on who he was: “People were very nice, they start to recognize you. I feel very at home here. And the media here is very fast.” Case in point: On his second month here, he was selected as one of the centerfolds for the annual Cosmo 69 Bachelors issue, and his appearance at the accompanying Bachelor Bash has only fanned the adulation.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HIM NEXT: After five months here, Daniel has set his sights on the next step—and for models, that’s acting. He has already met “three or four times with the women of GMA.” (It’s true—the top executive positions in GMA Network are all occupied by women.) But he has a laidback approach to what life throws his way: “I continue with my modeling…if the opportunity to do movies comes, I will do my best.”
