Sid Lucero: From bad to good

MANILA, Philippines - Sid Lucero is very good when he’s playing a bad guy. Think Dahil May Isang Ikaw, Sugo and other projects.

But Sid in a good guy role? Who knows? Sid himself doesn’t.

That’s why he bristles with excitement when he reports on the set of ABS-CBN’s newest afternoon series Magkano ang Iyong Dangal?. This time, Sid is not the crook or devil incarnate. The award-winning Sid makes a 180-degree turn as Nilo, a smart, principled guy who protects his friend Carmela (Bangs Garcia).

The career risk is calculated.

“It’s a difficult role. Playing a protagonist in a story that doesn’t revolve around romance for a change is a challenge,” he says.

Playing screen villain, Sid goes on, gives him lots of room to explore. A good guy, role on the other hand, is not as flexible.

Meantime, the question as to whether the public will accept him in a goody-goody role or not hangs over Sid like the sword of Damocles.

He’s not that worried, though. Sid is more worried about the big no-no called typecasting.

“My goal is to have as many roles as possible,” he says. “I’ve turned down roles which I think are repetitions of what I’ve done.”

Feeling that he’s done a good job at the end of the day is more important to Sid.

“I love my job,” he declares. “If I have to change my physique to play a character that doesn’t fit me, I will.”

The deluge of praise he gets along the way is just icing on the cake.

“I appreciate the good words,” Sid explains. “But I don’t let them get into my head.”

Sid downplays the fact that Chito Roño, his director in Magkano ang Iyong Dangal? was so impressed he created a role especially for the actor in the movie musical Emir.

“I don’t think he created a role for me,” Sid protests.

Still, he’s now in Morocco to shoot Emir, which revolves around the story of OFWs.

Sid says he is cast in a supporting role. But that doesn’t mean he should relax. Like any serious actor, Sid pours his heart and soul into any role. It doesn’t matter if it’s cameo, support, or lead, or whether it’s shown in the biggest theaters or not.

“I really feel pressured (about Emir),” he admits.

Sid doesn’t feel pressured, though, when it comes to following in the footsteps of cousin Ryan Eigenmann,who will marry his long-time girlfriend next month.

True, Sid has been going steady with Rozie Delgado, his girlfriend of six years. But wedding bells are not about to ring anytime soon.

“I have to prioritize,” states Sid. “How can I think of myself being with someone if I’m not even done with myself as an individual?”

Rozie, who comes from the Laurel showbiz-political clan, understands and gives him all the space he needs.

They’ve weathered attacks on their relationship from fans who frown on the romance. The scathing comments hurt at first. But things changed when Rozie directed a film (she has a degree in Film Studies). She started to understand that fans don’t want their idol to end up with someone else other than his/her leading man or leading lady.

Rozie also knows the need not worry when she sees Sid kissing Bangs in Magkano ang Iyong Dangal? (which premieres tomorrow, Jan. 25 after Wowowee on ABS-CBN).

He may be attracted to Bangs and they may be at ease with each other, but romance outside the cameras never crossed his mind.

“I haven’t fallen in love with my leading lady. That’s a boundary you should never cross because professionalism is important,” he relates.

In other words, Sid doesn’t mix business with pleasure. It’s part of his work ethic. And it’s getting him to places he has never been before, to roles he never imagined he would play.

That, for Sid, is enough reward.

Sid Lucero portrays reluctant angel

MANILA, Philippines—Last weekend, we visited the Hospicio de San Jose shoot of Doy del Mundo’s feature film, “Paglipad ng Anghel,” produced by De La Salle University as part of its upcoming centennial celebration. On the set, the sickly old woman played by Anita Linda was being carried by Sid Lucero to a taxi. The latter plays Gabby, an accountant who is innately good. His goodness becomes a burden when wings literally grow on his shoulders—and he becomes a reluctant angel!
Scholars

Sid had taken a Technical Theater course at De La Salle-College of St. Benilde. He confesses, “I came from a lot of schools. I really wanted an arts course, that’s why I moved to CSB. I used to think so highly of myself—I was proud. CSB gave me a sense of humility. I walked down the corridors with my head down. Half of my classmates were scholars. So, I learned how to get along with people from all walks of life.”

During our interview, Sid hadn’t slept for 24 hours, because he came straight from the taping of his television series, “Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal?” Since his first film appearances in Lav Diaz’s “Heremias” and Adolf Alix Jr.’s “Donsol,” Sid has certainly gone places, having won the Urian Best Actor prize for his performance in “Selda,” then crossing over to the mainstream TV industry. His career skyrocketed after he was cast as Red on the hit TV series, “Dahil May Isang Ikaw.”

How did he cross over from independent films to mainstream? Sid beams: “It just happened. But, making indies is an artistic outlet and a passion. On the side, you try to make some money by selling yourself on TV.”

The actor, whose favorite films are “Orapronobis” and “Oro, Plata, Mata,” has one dream—to become a director. He explains: “I love rebel filmmakers who make their own statements—I always cheer them on! I admire those who make movies not for the sake of money. The productions of the ’70s and ’80s had many important things to say. Now, it’s all fantasy. I want our people to watch the acclaimed films we show to the rest of the world.”

Sid Lucero: Competent actor, effective villain

Every time I have a chance to watch local programs, I watch Dahil May Isang Ikaw for two reasons: one, it has a compelling story thread, and even as it finds itself meandering every now and then, it is not as bad as most local TV drama series; and two, Sid Lucero.

The one-time fledgling actor seems to have finally found his niche as a performer. I think he is the best actor of his generation, surpassing even the talent of his own father… Mark Gil.

While I love Sid as a person, I can’t do the same for Red, the character he plays in the series. In fact, Lucero’s transformation of Red from an empathetic character into a hideous man seemed too way calculated I was caught off guard.

Many may say it was manipulative, but Lucero knows exactly when he would turn Red into a despicable man. Apparently Red has forgotten that his adopted family, especially Tessa (Lorna Tolentino) and Miguel (Jericho Rosales) did everything to take him off the streets and away from the evils that consume people living a low life, all because of one woman.

In last Tuesday’s installment, he nearly killed the man who treated him like his own brother, the man he so envies because Miguel has got Ella (Kristin Hermosa), the former street girl named Angel that he didn’t like until he has seen her grow up and blossom into a pretty woman.

The series would have fallen flat on the ground had it cast another actor to play Red, and it would have become a run-of-the-mill drama series, as most are on local TV channels.

I just hope producers will cast Lucero in more meatier roles, not necessarily odious.
