Confirmed: Apple Tablet In 2010 - the pc killer?

apple has consistently denied it will ever produce and sell a netbook product. pc netbooks have been exploding in sales and market sure due to its relatively low price amidst an economic crunch in the US.

high price is the key barrier for purchase and greater market share for macs but apple is uncompromising in their stand to offer only leading technology with premium quality at premium pricing. they have said they will largely ignore the significant growth in the netbook market because it doe not want to give up its philisophy.

this rumored and now confirmed apple tablet fits the apple marketing brand equity - a highly differentiated product loaded with the vaunted apple premium quality and industry leading design.

what should give pc makers pause is the projected price of $500 - $700 of the apple tablet. that price point is dizzingly attractive as it is seductively close to low priced pcs and not too much versus netbooks.

getting an apple/mac at $500-$700 with apple quality, superior ease of use and industry leading design will get a slice of the netbook market but is a sure thing in getting a big slice fo the pc market.

is apple set to launch the pc killer?

    Confirmed: Apple Tablet In 2010
Posted by: Peter Burrows on May 21

A source familiar with Apple’s product plans says that the company plans to introduce a tablet-based device in early 2010. This is consistent with the report from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster this morning suggesting precisely the same thing. Here’s the body of Munster’s note:

Signs Pointing To A New Mobile Device. Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents (see here) relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise.

Specifically, we expect this to result in a larger (7”-10”) touchscreen tablet that will launch in 1H CY10. Additionally, Apple’s consistent message that it refuses to launch a “cheap” portable netbook, and its desire to differentiate itself in a maturing market before it’s too late (similar to the timing of iPod and iPhone), plus its gradual addition of multi-touch technology to all of its core products (iPhones, iPods and Macs) leads us to conclude this product will be a touchscreen tablet (not a netbook).

No Netbook On The Horizon; Tablet A CY10 Event. We expect Apple to fill the gap between the iPod touch and the MacBook with a new tablet device (not a netbook) priced at about $500-$700. Apple will likely leverage its multi-touch patents to differentiate its product from the typical netbook. We are anticipating a new category of Apple products with an operating system more robust than the iPhone’s but optimized for multi-touch, unlike Mac OS X. The device’s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple’s mobile OS and run App Store apps, or it could be a modified version of Mac OS X. We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently, but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10.

Apple’s Timing In Entering New Markets. Apple launched the first iPod in Oct-01, three years after the first portable MP3 player was on the market. Likewise, the iPhone debuted in Jun-07, five years after the first BlackBerry with email and mobile phone capabilities. With both products, Apple designed devices that were differentiated enough to gain significant market share despite its later entrance into the markets. We believe Apple is observing the netbook market in a similar way, and will eventually enter with a tablet, a premium mobile computing device.

the question is will a 7" to 10" tablet with a price of $500 to $700 with apple premium quality, superior ease of use and functionality and industry leading design be able to take market share from netbooks or from pcs?

i think the price difference between a netbook and this apple tablet will still be too wide for the apple tablet to be able to remove market share from netbooks.

the apple tablet will be superior in functionality and superior versus netbooks but its price may still be a deterrent to convert that market in a significant way.

but compared to pcs, because it is an apple, it may attract more pc users. its price will be closer if not superior versus regular-sized pcs. assuming they will put in the same premium quality, superior ease of use and industry leading design, at that price it will attract a significant market share of pc users.

If Apple is building a touch-screen tablet as imagined by a recent analyst report, then the computer maker could find a strong market among consumers willing to pay more for a device that's easier to use and more functional than today's netbooks

    ---

Evidence pointing to such a device is coming from Piper Jaffray component contacts in Asia, as well as from recent Apple patents related to multitouch technology, comments to financial analysts in April by chief operating officer Tim Cook, Apple's acquisition of chip designer P.A. Semi, and recent chip-related hires, Munster said. "It is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise."

If Apple is working on such a device, then it could find a solid market. Despite their cramped keyboards and frustratingly tiny touch pads, netbooks have become the hottest-selling segment of the computer market, accounting for nearly a fifth of all laptops shipped in the first quarter of this year, according to DisplaySearch. While shipments of more traditional laptops and desktops have fallen in the economic recession, netbooks have experienced double-digit growth.

Part of the appeal, particularly for cash-strapped consumers, has been price. Netbooks typically sell for as little as $300, with most priced at less than $500. But price is only part of the story behind the popularity. The skyrocketing growth indicates that many people are buying because of the convenience of having an Internet-enabled computer that can fit into a pocketbook.

People who aren't just looking for a cheap laptop, and are willing to pay more for innovation, are a prime target for a design-focused company like Apple.

    ------

Given the current projections for netbook sales, getting a device out sooner than later would seem advantageous. As the economy improves, growth in netbook shipments is expected to slow year over year from more than 68% this year to less than 40% next year, eventually falling to slightly more than 13% by 2013, acccording to iSuppli.

Once price become less of a factor, then the market for a more innovative, albeit pricier, device is likely to grow.

i think part of the the problem of the pc market is not much game changing innovation has happened in the market. the pc market has added blue-ray, removed the disk, had wi-fi but its still basically the same product.

adding to that is the recent failure of microsoft in vista where it gave pc users a ton, several tons of headaches. that microsoft screw up gave pcs a remarkkable trach on its face.

the only real "innovation" in the pc market is the netbook. but even in that, its really not an innovation as it is not moving forward but it is a moving backward. came with the lower price and smaller everything was less functionality,

microsoft was also too slow to develope a dedicated OS for netbooks, making its use involving a significant loss in functionality.

the netbook has flourishd but it is clearly white space for apple who has the ability to give industry leading functionality and ease of use.

Easier to use is a bit presumptuous at this point. I mean, I love my macs but Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my netbooks just blew me away. Canonical is making a strong push to make UNR the de facto OEM linux distro on the netbook.

More functional is rather relative, too. I don't think Apple will be getting a proc any faster than what the others have. Besides the fact that they will encounter the same problems as other netbooks (space, heat, battery life, among others), putting any other sort of innovation on a thin client will be a daunting task. There are quite a few tablet netbooks out there already.

Microsoft is currently the undisputed commercial leader in haptic, or "multi-touch", interfaces. Unless Apple buys out Perceptive Pixel from under Jeff Han's micromanaging fingers, there is almost no chance of them overtaking MS in this technology.

The guy from information week is talking out of his a55. A better economy will actually result in more netbooks as you will have a broader installed base of people by then who're willing to do your marketing for you and are possible repeat customers. He also conveniently forgets to correlate his theories with this other iSuppli projection, along with this other one as well (which happen to be fairly recent, too). In any case, iSuppli has been wrong before.

I don't think an Apple tablet with the computing power of a netbook would be able to destroy the PC. It just can't.

    Confirmed? More like "confirmed rumor."

It's not confirmed until Apple makes an official announcement.

    Good luck killing the netbooks.

i think part of the the problem of the pc market is not much game changing innovation has happened in the market. the pc market has added blue-ray, removed the disk, had wi-fi but its still basically the same product.
And Apple added the un-safe "MagSafe", unibody aluminum, multitouch trackpad to Macs and it's also still basically the same product, too.

    What did I miss?

So a higher price is a requirement for one to be an "innovation"?

Like the expensive Macbook Air with the power and functionality of a netbook?

Like how Apple is too slow to patch a very basic security flaw?

Significant loss in functionality? What's wrong with Windows XP in netbooks? Other than the missing optical drive in netbooks (which is also missing on the $$$$$$$$-priced Macbook Air), what are these "significant loss in functionality" of netbooks you speak of?

Most of the netbooks available around have virtually identical specs already (with a few cosmetic differences). Apple would have to pull something totally different out of their asses to get people to buy their "tablet".

They better hurry though, Asus, MSI and Acer have already been churning out different models of netbooks for the market (meron na nga Asus na touchscreen) baka pagdating na nila w-ala na silang market share (with the exception of Mac fanbois though)....

Apple going for 500-700USD? That's somewhat unbelievable. It's like selling brand new ipod shuffles officially for less than 50usd.

a key question on this plan of an apple tablet is the keyboard. how will they design this? will it be a portable keyboard or will it be like the iphone/touch? or a combination of both. aside from the issue of a touchpad not have any tactile feel like a keyboard, some things you can do with a keyboard you can't do with a touch screen. there is also the issue of fatigue. working on a touch screen for long periods of time will be much more tiring than on a keyboard.

it would be interesting how apple will address these questions and the way they will tackle them from a physical and software design standpoints. apple is best know for brilliant design and ease of use - it will be a marvel how they will tackle these.

the apple tablet will most likely incorporate the excellent learnings they have gained from their ipod and iphone successes. it will not be surprising if they incorporate some of the iphone and ipod components, functions and other business models like the itunes annd app store.

for sure apple will use the app store for their tablet ensuring an industry leading robust menu of apps. it will most likely be the most widely application supported tablet in the market with the coolest and mose useful apps.

the app store and its offerings would have grown exponentially better in quality and number by the time the tablet will be launched in 2010 with the expected launch of the OS 3 this june.

the apple tablet can be the most exciting tablet in the market when it launches.

I wouldn't want to put my grimy fingers all over a 10" touch screen. I prefer the clickety-clack of the keyboard...

I think Apple will just release a 10" version of the Macbook and say in their advertisments that it's not a netbook....
