    Written by Cesar Pambid
    Tuesday, 06 March 2012

Narito ang status na post ni Ed de Leon sa FB tungkol sa ‘di umano’y estupidong promo slant: There seems to be a little confusion here. It is not true that the film made by GMA will be the first to be shown in the American commercial theater circuits. The first Filipino film to penetrate the American commercial theater circuit was Manuel Conde’s ‘Genchis Khan’ in 1953. It was distributed in the US by United Artist. Originally in Tagalog, it was dubbed with a narration by James Agee. The film was also shown in Paris in 1954, and was in the main competition category in the 1952 Venice Film Festival.

The first Filipino actor to ever be in an American film as the lead star was Fernando Poe Jr., in the film ‘Walls of Hell’ with Jack Mahoney in 1964, and then in ‘The Ravagers’ with John Saxon in 1965

Just for your info, and please don’t be fooled.

'The Road' Not The First Pinoy Film To Be Shown Commercially In US

MANILA, Philippines — RHIAN’S ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD: While she may be missed during press conferences for her new movie, “My Kontrabida Girl,” Rhian Ramos has been gracing the mall tours and other promotional activities related to the film, a romantic comedy opposite Aljur Abrenica which opens on March 14.

The young drama actress, who plays a screen villainess in “Kontrabida,” is also bracing for a Hollywood outing on May 9 when her most recent film, “The Road,” holds a red-carpet premiere at the Mann Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. Rhian is naturally most excited at the prospect of walking down the red carpet under beautiful spring weather. Set to traipse the same Hollywood walk are co-stars Marvin Agustin, TJ Trinidad, and Alden Richards, together with their director, Yam Laranas.

“The Road” has been picked up by an L.A.-based international releasing company, Freestyle Releasing, for worldwide distribution. Its first targets are the theatrical markets – as opposed to art houses – in North America and Canada.

GMA Films president Annette Gozon-Abrogar said that the film will be shown in 50 theaters across the US starting on May 11.

    • • •

NOT THE FIRST FILIPINO FILM: While “The Road” is literally breaking new ground in the international scene in the present century, it is certainly not the first time that a Filipino film has achieved a similar feat.

Veteran entertainment reporter Edd de Leon clears that as early as 1953, a Philippine-made film, “Genghis Khan,” made its debut in US commercial theaters.

The award-winning “Genghis Khan,” starring Manuel Conde and Elvira Reyes, gained good notices at the Venice International Film Festival that year. It was released internationally by United Artists.

This was followed by the showing in US theaters in 1954 of “Siete Infantes de Lara,” re-titled as “Sons of the Seven Devils.” Both films were directed by Manuel Conde, who sold them to Howard Hughes, then head of United Artists, according to de Leon.

“Genghis Khan” was also shown in commercial theaters in France in 1954.

    • • •

FPJ FILMS: De Leon recalls that in 1965, the Fernando Poe, Jr. starrer, “Ang Salarin,” similarly enjoyed a commercial run in US theaters under the heading, “The Man With A Gun.” FPJ’s international career landed him a starring role opposite Chuck Mahone in “Walls of Hell,” an American war film shot in Intramuros, Manila. FPJ also co-starred with John Saxon in an internationally released movie, “The Ravagers.”

A good number of Filipino-made films produced in collaboration with Hollywood production companies and directed by Cirio Santiago were also shown in American movies houses in the 1960s and ’70s.

National Artist Eddie Romero has his own share of internationally screened movies.

De Leon notes that even the Celso Ad. Castillo film, “Ang Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa” (retitled “Island in the Sun”) starring Gloria Diaz, was shown in commercial theaters in Hawaii and Guam in the mid-1970s.

    Written by Ronnie Carrasco III
    Friday, 09 March 2012

MASYADONG hardsell ang promo slant ng pelikula nina Rhian Ramos at Aljur Abrenica, na ginamit pampakilig ang kissing scene nila at the strike of 12 midnight nitong Valentine’s Day.

Sa tanggapin ni Rhian o hindi, ngayong “buhay” na naman sa Twitter ang dati nitong karelasyong si Mo Twister ay mahihirapang makatakas ang aktres from the ghost of her haunting past. No amount of trying-hard, diversionary publicity ploy can change all that overnight.

More Pinoy Films Released In US Commercial Theaters Listed; Laranas Maintains Claim

CONTROVERSY OVER ‘THE ROAD:’ Have we just stirred a hornet’s nest when we wrote in this column the other day that GMA Films’ “The Road” isn’t exactly the first Filipino film to ever screen in mainstream commercial theaters in the United States and Canada?

Following a reaction from veteran entertainment journalist Edd de Leon that “Genghis Khan” is the holder of such a record as the film was shown across the US in 1953, veteran director Gil Portes has similarly put in his two cents’ worth on the matter.

Multi-awardee Portes says his own film, “Mga Munting Tinig (Small Voices)” also enjoyed theatrical release in the US and Canada after it was nominated as the Philippine entry to the 2002 Oscar Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. “Small Voices,” an indie film about poor children trying to get an education in rural Philippines and starring Alessandra de Rossi in the lead role, was distributed in North America by Warner Bros.

Portes reminds that another Philippine-made film, “American Adobo,” produced by ABS-CBN in cooperation with Unitel, directed by Laurice Guillen and shot entirely in New York, similarly had a theatrical run in the US. Other Filipino films that were allowed theatrical releases in the US and other parts of the world, such as Europe, include Lino Brocka classics like the Nora Aunor-driven “Bona,” “Bayan Ko,” and “Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag.”

    There’s more on Portes’ List.

    “Serbis” by Brillante Mendoza.

    “Macho Dancers” by Brocka.

    “Midnight Dancers” by Mel Chionglo.

The Filipino-directed but US-produced documentary film “Imelda.”

    • • •

REACTION SHOT: “The Road” director Yam Laranas wrote us an e-mail thanking us for having written about his film but maintained his and his producers’ stand.

Laranas said, “I am proud of ‘Genghis Khan’ and Manuel Conde’s legacy, but I stand by our claim, that ‘The Road’ is the first Filipino film to be released in mainstream commercial cinemas all over the US. It is not a marketing ploy, but this is fact.”

“The Road,” a multiple-star horror-drama starring Rhian Ramos, Marvin Agustin and TJ Trinidad in lead roles, opens in at least 50 theaters across the US and Canada for an entire week starting on May 11.

Julie Anne San Jose and Elmo Magalona prepare for their first, big-screen kiss
    Ruel J. Mendoza
    Saturday, March 10, 2012

"I am really excited about what's happening now.

"Kelan lang po I was just performing on television. Ngayon I'm doing a big movie," sabi ni Elmo sa aming interview sa kanya ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa story conference ng Just One Summer.

"It's happening so fast, pero I am enjoying it. I want to do good with what GMA-7 is giving me and my partner Julie Anne."

"Kami naman po ni Julie, we've worked [together] on TV so many times na and we know that the chemistry is there.

"We're always supporting one another and every time naman na magkasama kami, we always give our best.

"Gusto po naming i-share ang talent namin with so many people, lalo na ang fans ng JuliElmo who are always there to cheer for us and really show their support," ngiti pa ni Elmo.

WORKING WITH VETERANS.

"It's really an honor for us to be working with the likes of Ms. Gloria Romero, Ms. Cherry Pie Picache, Ms. Alice Dixson and Mr. Joel Torre.

Difference Between 'Released' And 'Commercially Released' Film In US Noted

    Moviegoer
    By NESTOR CUARTERO
    March 13, 2012

LARANAS VERBATIM: We have decided to run in full "The Road" director Yam Laranas’ disclosure to Bulletin Entertainment in line with our on-going discussion on Filipino films that have made it to the highly contested US mainstream market.

The discussion was sparked by Laranas’ pronouncement that "The Road," which is booked to screen in 50 commercial theaters across the United States and Canada starting on May 11, is the first Filipino film to achieve such a feat. The Laranas-directed horror drama has been picked up for world distribution by LA-based Freestyle Releasing.

Following is Laranas’ letter in full:

    "Dear Mr. Cuartero,

Thanks for the mention in your column!

In my humble opinion, there is a HUGE difference between being "released" and COMMERCIALLY RELEASED IN THE U.S. MAINSTREAM THEATRICAL AND VIDEO-ON-DEMAND MARKET. We are the latter and we are the first. It is a claim that we make, not to compete with other local producers or filmmakers – we are only stating the facts.

"Mr. Portes’ ‘Little Voices’ is not MPAA rated so it is not considered mainstream. ‘Crying Ladies’ was released in more or less 5 cities in the U.S. ‘Serbis’ similarly had a limited release.

"I will let the North American PR and Marketing campaign of GMA Films’ "THE ROAD" speak for itself in the days to come. That way, Filipino film enthusiast will have the opportunity to compare the scale of this mainstream release compared to what Mr. Portes claims.

    Thanks again sir!

    Best,

    Yam"

    • • •

PORTES REACTS AGAIN: In his own inimitable, spitfire-fashion reaction shot, Gil Portes requests GMA Films not to belittle the Filipino-made "art" films that paved the way for their "commercial" film.

These films, according to Portes, won awards and gave recognition to this country.

He continues: "I sincerely hope that ‘The Road’ will create thunder in the US, so we can all celebrate in the resurgence of Philippine cinema. The great Filipino directors who started all this who are now in the after life must be celebrating this momentous event. It is my hope that we who are still struggling to be recognized abroad be accorded the same luck soon."

As an aside, Portes says he can’t stand people who belittle his work. "My films and the other films depict social issues that are absent in their films," he adds.

Portes then puts in a poser, wondering if "The Road" will be shown at the Zegfeld Theater, said to be the most prestigious cinema in New York.

    My Kontrabida Girl
    ♣♣/♣♣♣♣♣

I guess the reason why I have given this only 2/5 is the lack of laugh out loud moment in the cinema. I came in with high expectations because I found the teasers rather funny, but after seeing the whole movie it seems that there were only two or three scenes where the audience really laughed, modestly. The rest of the time there was either just stifled laughter or indifferent silence. It is weird that way. It is not a Derramas comedy that makes people laugh out in unison over some absurd scene replete with slapstick comedy, which means it should be something good and out of the box. However, most of the jokes fall flat and most of the time the delivery seems unnatural.

Another strange thing is that the director is actually the one who directed Zombadings. That one was indie and more or less shot with less budget but turned out to be a hilariously entertaining movie despite the otherworldliness of the story. It is weird that this movie fails in that aspect in spite of dealing with a story that should really have been more relatable. Perhaps it is because of the love story which steals most of the screen time, or the lack of chemistry between the leads. Or both. They really should have just focused on the “kontrabida” herself and her line of work and gone the same way Ang Babae Sa Septic Tank did, not in terms of storytelling but rather on its style as a playful jab on the local entertainment industry. That way this could have easily become a cult classic. Instead, it ends up as a typical romantic comedy which is not really that funny.

Rhian Ramos has the looks and could practice more on the delivery but she does not seem to have the presence, or the comedic timing to pull off this role convincingly. She is actually more effective in that blooper scene where she and her PA switch roles. Again, weird, because they really do a good job in making her look feisty, but still there seems to be something lacking. Marian Rivera or Lovi Poe would have fared better and would have added some spark to the character had they been chosen instead. Rhian had a better performance in The Road, despite the shorter screen time.

Aljur Abrenica is actually good in those scenes where he is angry, which seemed natural. However, his character’s naivety here seems to have been abused to evoke laughter that the trick gets old fast and you get the feeling that they just created the character to be like that to make up for the scarcity of witty punch lines.

Pinoys love their “kontrabidas” and by that observation alone you would probably think that this movie would really be a hit. It is just too bad that the director does not capitalize on this. This could have easily been a cult classic if they played their cards right, if there were more moments of camp acting meant to criticize the rather one-dimensional characterization of villains on Philippine TV. Instead, the comedy aspect takes the backseat and is easily hindered by the contrived love story that becomes the focus of the movie after half an hour or so.

Like the case of Sam Pinto na may iilang nilalang diyan na gusto siyang ilaglag sa casts ng Boy Pick Up topbilled by Ogie Alcasid. For us mas may “K” siyang di hamak kaysa ipinagmamalaki n’yong Solenn na ‘yan. Mga insecured gyud!
