Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting, Quo Vadis?

It is common practice in some Accountancy Schools, that those who pass the retention policies in the B.S. Accountancy, are down-graded to this course?

What do you think of this course? What are the career options of those who graduate with this degree? Considering the curriculum content of this course, is there a bright future that awaits its graduates? How can we improve this program to make it's graduates productive contributors to commerce & industry.

    Please share your insights.

actually my students kept on asking me what is the difference between a management accounting graduate with that of an accounting graduate, i simply tell them at present, it's the CPA license. based on my opinion, i feel that presently wala pang masyadong acceptance for management accounting graduates dahil lumalabas na they lack the other requirements for an accounting position, e.g. auditing subjects.... and for most employers given the chance to choose two applicants, an BSA and a MA graduate, most probably they would choose the BSA graduate.... in addition, medyo nakukulangan ako sa MA curiculum!

What is their employment prospect when compared to those who took the BSA? Are they equally employable? Or do they end up as accounting clerks?

    Hi Paz,

Suggest ko incorporate niyo ang body of knowledge ng CMA-USA and CIMA-UK sa BSMA niyo with emphasis on decision making. Ang tawag sa management accountant in some big companies ay business partner. Dahil sila ang kanang kamay ng mga operating unit heads when they make decisions.

Magkikita uli kami ni Peng ng CIMA-Malaysia this January. Hopefully we can come up with a good arrangement with them to promote CIMA to the academe & the industry.

Sa school namin dati wala ng MA, pinalitan ng Accounting Technology. Are they the same? May mga kilala ako n graduate ng MA, they work as clerks.

to all fellow educators here specially those who are in the position to recommend, Management Accounting seems to be a promising career but as of now, sad to say medyo kulang as in walang definite direction as to where they will be positioned in a company, or is it that i lack the proper knowledge regarding this, in this case, kindly enlighten us more regarding this promising field! cheers

For those interested in getting CIMA books, Mutual Books (contact person: Ms. Chet Nicdao) is the distributor. They are also the distributor of most Accounting books from Wiley & Cengage.

    Employability of BSBA-MA

in my experience, the graduates were easily employed as accounting clerks and audit staff. some took the CB exam and some enrolled sa MBA program.

may retention policy din kasi ang MA dito sa MSEUF and di pwede na may 3 sa accounting subjects.

will try to incorporate the CIMA body of knowledge to enhance the program. thank you, larry for your suggestion.

Wow, if ever, yours is the first school to incorporate a world-class body of knowledge into your curriculum. Sama mo na rin body of knowledge ng CMA-US. Para your students can take either of the two certifications.

Just want to share... When I was still dean of CKSC, simple lang ang retention policy namin, one qualifying exam before going to second year of BSA, then repeat the subject if you fail to get 75% in a base-zero grading system. I let students decide if they want to shift to other courses. So far maganda naging results, napasama kami sa top 10 accountancy schools for 2002-2006 PRC listing.

Honestly, I don't believe in a very stringent retention policy. A body of knowledge can be mastered once "learning skills issues" are addressed, although some students take 2 terms to master the financial accounting subject. Para kasi sa akin ang dapat na performance measures ng isang good accountancy school is not passing percentage sa board exam kundi number of CPAs produced divided by number of freshmen enrolled from the same batch.

Madali naman kasi magtanggal ng students sa BSA program, magpa departmental test/exam ka lang ng topics kahit di naituro ng mabuti ng isang professor you can already identify those who will not make it. But seriously, is it entirely the student's fault if they fail because of some deficiency in teaching?

If you apply the Cost of Quality concept, mapapansin mong dumarami ang mga schools na ang taas ng Quality Cost, specifically Internal Failure Cost. I define Internal Failure Cost as Number of Students who were not able to graduate with the BSA degree dividend by number of freshmen accepted into the program.

Sana lubusang maayos ang accountancy programs sa Pinas, whether BSA or BSMA. Para tuluyang maging world-class ang Pinoy accountants, mapa BSA or BSMA graduates man.

i really love reading exchanges between CPAs in the academe, na iincorporate talaga nila ang profession where they excel most,

clue: san ba naririnig ang internal failure cost?

to dean pazbobadilla and sir larry, i am personally benefited by these exchanges, so we hope sana dumami pa ang educator dito sa PEX and be active likewise!

    cheers to all of us!
