    Wedding Gift: How much?

My dad was chosen to be one of the principal sponsors (12 pairs). The wedding will be held in Manila Cathedral followed by a recepcion in Manila Hotel. My question is magkano ba ang dapat na wedding gift? btw, three of us will attend the wedding.

    Wedding present.

Depends on how much your father can afford.

I was a ninong at a wedding in PI five years ago. I believe I gave P20k at the wedding.

I don't know how much rule of thumb is to give a wedding present for principal sponsors are but there's the assumption that principal sponsors need to give something major (whether in cash or kind) to assist the couple in the start of their married life hence their selection as principal sponsor. But of course that depends on what the sponsor can afford.

Usually the more expensive appliances, vacation trips or more generous cash amounts are given.

My parents have been principal sponsors a couple of times and they have given things like gas range, ref, AC, a complete set dinnerware set, etc. and cash.

Ten thou as a gift certificate from a houseware plus a bouquet of flowers, tama na yun, marami naman palang sponsors.

Btw the bride is my dad's inaanak sa binyag she is a doctor.

Wala naman rules kung magkano ang dapat mong ibigay, as long as makakatulong dun sa mag-asawa

@ TS- I think 500 USD is worth it naman for a doctor...

@BeerhandBop - hindi naman siguro yun "kumikitang" wedding..Come to think of it..it's held in Manila Cathedral..I'm pretty sure the amount spend to be held in that church shows that gifts are not measured by how fat your money is...

Diba Chinese ka? (I read it somewhere in PPP thread) I'm sure you're aware that most Chinese cared most is the "face"... giving money on wedding is like doing business pa rin... syempre the more money you give, the more face value you gain... As for the reciever part, parang may utang na loob ka na...

Remember in Chinese ways, the better you practice "guan xi" the better for your business..."Guan xi" is everywhere... it can be shown in weddings, birthdays, anniversary...

Oh well!!! I'm sure some well off Pinoy are practicing that as well...

Depending on how far ahead the wedding would be, why not give a gift that would go up in value/has investment value? Since the gift is a wedding gift--why not come up with a gift that provides for the married couple and their future family? Maybe a UITF or bonds or even accidental death life insurance (single payment/lump sum payment and one that doesn't require a physical)?

That way your gift helps provide for their future as they embark on their new life as a family...

We have this office mate dati na parang family na rin namin... His Korean, and for 3 years sobra sya stress sa paghanap ng gf..

1st year, his parents in Korea told him to look for koreans only
2nd year, parents told him na ok na rin Chinese
3rd year sa Pinas, finally nag give in parents nya and allowed him to date Pinay.

he even told us if we found a gf for him whom he will get married with, he will give that person a roundtrip plane ticket to Korea w/ pocket money... Well, after 3 years his friend introduced him to a girl (korean teacher yun girl) and they finally got married and it's held here in Manila...

Since his like family na rin sa amin and his parents wasn't able to attend, we bought some gifts for him...

    - beddings and comforter for queen size bed
    - kitchen utensils (pots and pans)
    - Kama sutra book (torpe kasi eh)
    - nighties for the wife

    o diba! complete!!!

...and his friend was given the roundtrip tour to Korea...

oh okay.. so he has a reason to be there, then. i think bigay nalang ng 20k... pero baket USD? why not peso gift cheque nalang?

".and his friend was given the roundtrip tour to Korea."

    ^ ninong/ ninangs

in a typical wedding nowadays.. there will atleast be 6 or more pairs... they're the ones who are expected to give the largest amount of gift value.

I had our wedding at Manila Cathedral as well.

This is a very simple, yet tricky situation.

It actually depends on the sponsor. How do you want to reflect yourself to the couple? If you are generous enough, you might as well give about 15-20K. I myself received 30K each from two godparents. This mostly applies if you are not that close to the couple but more on the couple's parents and the reason they took you as their godparents is because they see you as financially able.

Sometimes, it doesn't matter how much or whatever you give. On our wedding, we also received from one of our godparents an item of high value (not monetarily). It was a bible, with wedding dedication by the godparent. We asked this individual to be our godparent because he is a true example of a good catholic. He was a notorious crime lord during his youth and eventually changed his ways. He is now a preacher. We actually value this simple gift more than the cash we received. Well, money ain't bad as well.

I guess you need to get to know the couple first. Undeniably there are business-types of wedding nowadays.

So think which one would apply.

5 star hotel and then medyo nasa 60s na ang godparents
    ave 5k-10k-15k.

Kapag simple restaurant like Cabalen 3k to 5k. Yes nasa venue din yan syempre. Pero kapag close family relative mo yan kahit Kamayan pa yan or Manila Hotel at least 5k.

  18. #18

we have 5 pairs... lahat yun either wife ko or ako ang may kilala at kami nag ask sa kanila kaya siguro alam nila ang best gift for us hehehe
