I dont think Filipinos are "obsessed" with malls.
I think since most Filipinos cant afford expensive homes, why not spend time in expensive malls? Malamig na, mabango, at maraming tao (masaya).
When your trainer said that Filipinos are "Obsessed" with malls, is that a bad thing? And if it is, why is it a bad thing?
Baka very basic amenities ng malls nila.
Tsaka dito sa Pilipinas, when we are tired of malls, ang dami nating outdoors na puede puntahan. May mga beach pa. Sila ba, maraming ganun?

London has very good security but be extra cautious when passing by parks and other open spaces.
Sa US nga Walmart and Target stores are hangouts by teenagers way up to 2am. Parang ginawa mong tambayan ang Makro or Pricemart.
The Irony is, third world country ang pilipinas.
Malls provide the cheapest form of escape.
Madaming ganito dba?
I barely go to malls if not for sunday mass (Galleria, yung EDSA shrine). I go to Trinoma whenever I have time just after dismissal time, being that UST's pretty near trinoma, and other malls as well.
I'm not one of those people na pupunta lang sa mall para magpalamig. I always make sure my time inside a mall would be worthy the effort of taking a bath, wearing clothes, bearing the heat from commute, and the money and time spent. Nowadays, I go to malls to watch movies or updating myself with the latest sales and prices for the things I would probably buy the next time I visit.
libre aircon
libre mangarap (window shopping)
libre tubig (sa may foodcourt)
libre cr (swerte pag may tissue)
libre security (pwede magtext ng walang inaalala)
libre lasa (free taste sa mga promo)
libre basa (bookstore sa loob ng mall)
libre entertainment (lalo na pag weekends daming pakulo minsan may artista pa...)
libre tambay (walang sisita sayo at magpapalayas kahit gaano ka pa katagal sa loob)
in short... basta libre patok! =)
Kaya pumupunta sila sa mall, kasi duon nga naman sila "makakahinga", malalamigan at malinis pa ang paligid nila as oppose to where they live.
i once watched a 2 hr movie once and i slept inside the theater for about 4 hours. masyado kasi akong maaga sa meetung namin nun so i decided to watch a movie first. i finished it, eh masyado pang maaga so naisipan ko munang umidlip, di naman reserved tickets ang kinuha ko, at di pa ata uso noon yung naninita kapag ayaw umalis (nasa pinaka taas ako so di ako napansin)
di ko lang maalala yung film, pero i'm sure it was a drama film. kasi kung action yun, baka di nako nakatulog! haha
Wala namang masama. But I hoped there were more parks and other recreation than malls. I mean the point of irony the TS i get ('shanty towns with malls?'), but then business ventures and private businesses are what fund these. Parks? The government can't even maintain a few let a lone build some.
I think the Philippines should have: bike trails, parks, soccer fields, basket ball courts, open air markets (not palengkes those are disgusting) etc.
I agree, magaganda talaga ang mall sa atin.
The mall culture is very much welcomed for the majority because the place is a total yet brief antithesis on one's distress and melancholy. It is a world coated with animation and happiness, at a temperature one could not usually experience for free. Also to provide respite and relieve stress, particularly during a long and tiring day at work.
I don't see anything wrong with Filipinos going to malls - we are not obsessed. Most of the people who go to malls everyday either work there or has to pass by there to get to another place (just like when you work in Makati and you need to ride the MRT going to QC or somewhere else - you pass by Ayala Malls and then SM to get to the MRT station).
I guess the American isn't used to people being in malls. Our malls are far better than the malls you'd see in other countries. True, a lot of people go to malls for the A/C especially during Summer when the heat is unbearable. Another time is during power outages - since most people in the country don't have generators to keep them cool.
