China bars enrollment in Palawan school

MANILA, Philippines - Days after tours to the Philippines were cancelled by Chinese travel agencies, the Chinese government reportedly advised its students not to enroll at the Palawan State University (PSU).

According to PSU President Dr. Jeter Servañez Sespeñe, almost 300 Chinese students were supposed to enroll in the university this month.

Many of them were going to major in Petroleum Engineering.

Sespeñe said the tension between the Philippines and China caused by a territorial dispute over the Scarborough Shoal may have influenced the students’ decision to study elsewhere.

If the students changed their minds, however, PSU said it will still be willing to let them enroll. - DZMM

I think so. Nag exam din sila. Si jeruson (pexer, few pages back) ay nag exam din at sya ay licensed Mechanical Engineer ng Mapua at ngayon ay kaklase ko sa Methods of Research (4th year, second semester).

Maganda talaga ang Palawan, very conducive for learning ang environment. Etong May 2012, three years na ako sa Puerto Princesa.

Great help.

Are you planning to pursue PetEngg?
Thank you for considering my vision. I passed the aptitude test for PetEngg, and will definitely enroll on May 31 this year. I'm quite surprised about the combined number of freshmen and transferees in this programme around 200+ yet only a handful of fortunate individuals made it to graduate (more or less 30).

I'm starting to believe that the Petroleum Engineering Department has been enforcing a "strict retention policy". For people who wish to major in PetEngg, you shouldn't take it for granted.

Are you a transferee or a second courser?

Welcome to Palawan State University, sir.

Just so you know, around 30 made it to graduation this year. But starting next year, I am pretty sure the number of graduates would skyrocket. In our batch, around 80 are currently doing On-the-Job Training and should most of us make it, this year's number of graduates will double by next year, 2013.

The following batches are quite over populated as well, so if they really want to strengthen the program, it should start with the tighter screening of prospective students. What happens here, in my observation, is they give priority to students coming from different places. They give consideration, especially to those who are from other countries, and those Pinoy students who finished their high school outside the Philippines. Some of these students are from Middle East who were somehow asked by their parents to enroll Petroleum Engineering since this will give them better chances of landing a lucrative job.

They have been telling us that they were going to implement a strict 2-failures-you're-out policy but until now, many students keep on failing more than what is allowed but are still able to enroll for the following semester.

If this continues, then your vision for Palawan State University Petroleum Engineering will take quite some time to materialize. But we're all hoping for the best.

To those who are interested in joining Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition in Perth, Australia, you may ask our SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers) president for info. We will be having a meeting with regards to travel order and visa application. This will be on October 20 - 22, just after final exams. Last year was in Jakarta, Indonesia and we were 20 in the group. We're planning to join Petrobowl and send more than one team.

Thank you. I'm a transferee. I studied at UPLB for two years w/o finishing my degree. At first, I realized that maybe I just wanna try this wonderful opportunity that came forth. And It just turned out to be good.

If that’s the case, I think it’s an act of desperation for financial gain on the part of College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology (CEAT) administration. It’s entirely obvious that a spike in the number PetEngg enrollees will raise the revenue of the college. Perhaps, the fiscal budget for PSU – CEAT has been declining for the past few years. And such dramatic declines in the past have left the administration to sacrifice the reputation of the college of having “high standards” as what has been known in the old days. The mindset should be that quality matters than quantity. It’s not all about the money. These people should realise their responsibility. They are molding individuals who will be a part of the global team of solving our energy issues.

The price of oil is getting higher because the cost of what it takes to produce is rising than its output. You know, people are now going crazy with $ 100 per barrel of oil.

Also given the current technology, we can only acquire a fraction of oil in a reservoir. Perhaps in the near future, most drilling operations will occur in far offshore about hundreds to thousand feet deep in the sea. The industry needs individuals who can make a difference. Such includes designing equipment that will make oil production cheaper and environmentally friendly, and thus will lower the oil prices down. If the oil price is down, the economies which were devastated by recession will definitely recover. We can now see the connection, do we? This civilisation that we’ve built for ourselves is entirely dependent on petroleum, that’s why.

Now let’s go back to the topic, we will need to push for campaign to raise funds exclusively for the college. The objectives of this campaign are:

    (1) To tap financial sources from the alumni – whatever form of donations they could give.
    (2) To strengthen corporate linkages exclusively from Oil and Gas corporations. It may hold the key to massive funding in terms of research, faculty training and facilities upgrade.

And how can the college attract corporate partnerships?

    (3) There is a need to spur a matter of research interest for the students. The college should not teach students to be just “little living libraries” but to participate in the process of establishment of knowledge.

    mrcrow.

Great idea. UP has been doing that and very effective. It's effective but commercialization follows. In Diliman, you can see rooms and buildings named after its sponsor. Recently, the newly constructed GT Toyota Asian Center. Gone are the days were buildings and halls were named after heroes and influential men and women.

Gastos kasi kapag pupunta ako Palawan at wala ako kamag-anak don. Plz pa help.

The annual budget for State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) is falling. The government is becoming irresponsible. The admin should think of alternative financial sources without increasing miscellaneous and tuition fees.

We can reverse this trend. If we become united for this cause, it's not impossible to achieve. We will find a right opportunity to have this advocation reach to the CEAT admin.

My idea is to incorporate a vision of becoming a "research oriented". If the college aims for "research and innovation" , everything will follow. How? The college will need curious and passionate individuals to carry out this mandate.

    And because of that:
    1. It will have a competitive admission policy
    2. It will need the best faculty
    3. It will raise the the standard of instruction
    4. More research activities will be allotted in the curriculum than typical classroom teaching hours, thus students are increasing their competency.

    The Output

    1. Innovation is what the industry needs today. And I'm certain that corporations will not think twice to support almost everything the college needs (scholar funds, faculty training - MS and PhDs education abroad & facilities upgrade). Only if it sees the college producing the best research output. Business as usual.

Perhaps, no one thought that students and faculty are the best assets of this college. You should start thinking like one.

    2. Having higher chances to get an ABET accreditation
    3. High employment opportunities for graduates
    4. More alumni and remarkable individuals will be attracted to give support.
    5. Generating higher funds thus accommodating more students for financial aid / scholarships.

We need to work on this matter. Since Petroleum Engineering in PSU just started way back 1995, we can't really tell if we are getting a support from the alumni. Heck, I am not even sure if there is an alumni association. There will be a voting of another set of officers for A.Y. 2012-2013 and I hope they would discuss this matter.

According to a classmate who had her OJT at Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC), their company is very much willing to donate some machines and other things that have something to do with the course. But the problem is the lack of initiative from the school administration to seek help from government (and even private companies). These things will help the students to have a solid foundation of what is being studied, not just pure theories basing on what is written on books. It's sad to say, but PSU Petroleum Engineering is really in need of better facilities to elevate the standard of the program.

I didn't even know how does a drill bit look like in person until I joined last year's Oil and Gas conference in Indonesia. It would be beneficial for the students to see what is being studied, and PNOC is one of the institutions that is very much willing to help.

To be fair, PSU CEAT has received a donation from Hitachi and they have some equipment / instruments placed in an air conditioned room which also functions as a classroom for higher years.

Hi there Chalil. Di tataas ng 10,000 ang tuition per semester. However, you're late for the semester. Second sem try mo mag enroll.

5 OJTs stayed in an offshore rig for 2 weeks

Im not really sure kung ano real name nya, di kasi kami masyadong close. I think it's Nathaniel.

From DOE Oil & Gas department, nagpunta sila sa El Nido via chartered plane, tapos helicopter to reach an offshore rig in Galoc. Nag stay sila dun for 2 weeks, all expenses were paid by DOE, sarap daw ng pagkain at unlimited. Now that's something different. Engg.

Good luck mga Petroleum Engineering students!
