Architecture students take home the gold at 3rd International Competition on Sustainable Architecture and Design 2010
The Mapúa Institute of Technology rises to the challenge as students from the graduating class from the School of Architecture, Industrial Design and the Built Environment (ARIDBE) bags the Gold Award at the International Competition for Sustainable Architecture and Design (ICSAD) last September 28, 2010.
The competition, which was launched in July of this year called for entries for pro-poor and eco-efficient housing solutions using local materials and vernacular traditions in a modern context. Geared toward housing problem of the urban poor, ICSAD encourages a creative and multi-disciplinary approach in designing sustainable city development of the future. It is participated by 20 schools and universities from across the globe, with two entries coming from MIT. Miss Rio Cielo F. Velasco, the representative of the team “Fusion”, presented the design solution to the panel of judges during the final leg of the competition and later received the award. Ms. Angeli-Kathryn Jalla, the representative of another team finalist under Archt. Albert S. Zambrano, likewise received their certificates as finalists.
The winning team, together with adviser architect Junar P. Tablan, received a one-week free accommodation at an environmentally friendly resort in Palawan, the chance to be involved in the design of the Zero Carbon Cottage for the EU co-funded “Zero Carbon Resorts” project, and publication of the entry in “Architect” journal in Japan.
The members of the graduating class are: Ada, Kristine C.; Cabrera, Juan Marco T.; Concepcion, Roy Q.; Gatus, Audrie Cristian M.; Guevara, Jomar R.; Kho, Michelle B.; Opulencia, Rona M.; Quinsay, Aliza G.; Trinidad, Sheryl P.; Velasco, Rio Cielo F.; and Yap, Analine P.
The winning entry “FUSION”, together with the other finalist entry from MIT, was exhibited at the UN Pavilion of Building Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China, and will be published in the official summary book of the competition.

ChE-Chm Professor Wins Annual Prof. Yen-Ping Shih Best Paper Award in Taiwan
One of the publications co-authored by Dr. Allan N. Soriano (Ph.D. Ch.E.) of the School of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry (ChE-Chm) bested the other papers published in the 2009 edition of the Journal of the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers (JTICE). The paper “Kinetics Study of Carbon Dioxide Absorption into Aqueous Solutions containing N-Methyldiethanolamine + Diethanolamine” appeared in JTICE (Vol. No. 40) in July 2009. The award is given annually by the Prof. Yen-Ping Shih Foundation through the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers, a professional organization of chemical engineers in Taiwan. Dr. Soriano together with the two co-authors of the paper, Chih-Yuan Lin and Dr. Meng-Hui Li, received the award last October 8, 2010 during the 2010 Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineers (APCChE) Conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The 2010 APCChE Conference was hosted by the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Mapúa ECE Clinched Second on Ateneo Interface 2011
Gerand Boy Elizano (ECE-5), Rimson Junio (ECE-3) and Abigail Reyes (ECE-5) placed second on the Annual Interface Competition sponsored by SMART and the Ateneo Electronics and Computer Engineering Society (AECES) of the Ateneo de Manila University last January 29, beating nearly 15 ECE schools in Metro Manila.

The competition is an annual event with an Amazing Race format testing the physical, mental and logical skills of students in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Programming, Electronics and Communications. Finalists battle in a quiz show after.
Mapúa ECE team were awarded with medals, certificate of recognition and P5000 cash prize. Engrs. Marloun Sejera and Glenn Avendano mentored as coaches.
TIP-Manila was declared as this year's champion and UP-Diliman landed third. Mapúa was sixth during last year's Interface competition.
Mapúa Cisco Track Advances to the National Skills Finals
Mapúa Cisco Track emerged as Cluster Champions during the Cisco Skills Cluster Elimination held at the AMACC-Makati Campus last Jan 24, beating other local academies in their cluster.
Mapúa Basic Team: Christopher Fernan, Charles John Idanan and Paul Kenneth Rigor and was coached by Engr. Joseph Ibarra.

Both the Mapúa Cisco Track Basic and Advanced Teams will be competing in the National Finals together with the other cluster winners at the Holy Angel University in Angeles, Pampanga on March 22.
Two Mapúans take Top 10 spots on the 2011 Architecture Licensure Exam
Once again, Mapúans take their place on the Top 10 spot. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released last Monday, February 7, 2011, the list of successful examinees of the Architecture Licensure Examination held on January 28 and 30, 2011. Out of the 912 examinees from different colleges and universities who passed, Mapúans Emmeline A. Co clinched 2nd place with a rating of 85.60 and Nicoy C. Delos Reyes took 3rd with a rating of 84.40.
Congratulations Arch. Emmeline Abugan Co and Arch. Nicoy Castro Delos Reyes and to all Mapúan passers of the 2011 Architecture Licensure Board Examination!

MAS Student Takes Home the Grand Prize for the 2nd Time
Mark Pedyson De Leon made a remarkable back-to-back victory after winning the 2011 Adspeak Best in Print Values Advertising Awards which he also won last year. Mr. De Leon garnered the judges’ choice for his work entitled Thirst, a poster about water conservation, while his other entry entitled Unmasked got the nods of both the jurors and the student delegates for the 2 nd Runner Up award.
De Leon also grabbed the Student’s Choice 2 nd Runner Up Award under the Campaign Category for his entry Nature Sense.
In the same event, the team of Oscar Ronald Morales and Jasian Betia won the Student’s Choice 2 nd Runner Up Award under the TV Category.
AdSpeak 2011 was held at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran on February 11, 2011. AdSpeak is an annual national convention on Values Advertising. The convention gathers students and professionals involved in advertising and media.
