The Mapúa Institute of Technology (MIT), in partnership with the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), implemented a newly designed multipurpose Identification Card (I.D.) for the new batch of freshmen of Academic Year 2009-2010.
Just like their counterparts used by students of prior batches, the new I.D. cards are used to check student accounts in the Kiosk, verify identities in payment procedures, and gain entry into the Institute. However, according to the Director of the Development Office for Information Technology (DOIT) Prof. Danilo R. Tiongco, the new ones carry a built-in ATM feature called “My Wallet,” that works with the idea of a debit card.
The My Wallet serves as an electronic purse, emphasizing the concept of “cash-less society.” Tiongco added that future visions regarding this innovation and for it to be used in the bookstore, canteen, and payment procedures in the treasury. The design is also universal, enabling it to be utilized in transacting with ATM machines linked to RCBC. As regulated by Bancnet, a maximum amount of one hundred thousand pesos can be stored in the My Wallet account.
The new ID is not only limited to the current batch of freshmen. Students from previous batches can also request for a change in their IDs. However, the process will take about two to three weeks to be completed before it can be claimed by availing students.

The Cardinals proved their reputation of being one of the best engineering schools in the country after bagging the second place in the inter-collegiate engineering science quiz contest entitled “Executive’s Challenge IV,” held last February 22 at the University of the Philippines—Los Baños.
Organized by the Civil Engineering Executive Organization (CEO), in cooperation with the Engineering Science Department, the annual Executive’s Challenge harbored renowned engineering schools throughout the country. The event served as a venue for the top engineering schools to test the students’ knowledge on different engineering principles.
The participants were weeded out in two major elimination rounds. The topics covered were Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Materials of Engineering, Mathematical Methods in Engineering, and Engineering Graphics.
Bulacan State University won the first place, while the second and third places went to the Mapúa Institute of Technology and University of the East Manila, respectively. The Mapúa Team was composed of Lewdan C. Ferrer (CE-4), Allan Bryan G. Revita (ECE-4), Nico Deus O. Villafranca (ME-4), and Edrian Soliguen (CE-4) as alternate. Engr. Edgardo S. Cruz of the CE-EnSE faculty served as the coach.

Roboteknik, a group composed of engineering graduates Mapúa, has developed a remote-controlled, camera-equipped aircraft. Named as Roboteknik CUSTOS or Aerial Reconnaissance Drone, the low-cost aircraft is made for search and rescue operations in times of disaster.
Considered as Roboteknik’s latest project, CUSTOS is a portable, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used to gather visual information on inaccessible places during calamities. The transmitted data can be simply and safely accessed and interpreted in a command station, thereby limiting the concerns regarding deployment. Relatively inexpensive compared to foreign-made UAVs that require high maintenance operations, this aircraft costs PhP 90,000 per unit.
CUSTOS, Latin for “guardian,” was developed by a group of Mapúan robotics enthusiasts namely, Michael Poblete, Ivan de Vera, Charles Rico and Leonard Canoza. Poblete has already won a number of awards for his underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) dubbed “Angel One.”
The Aerial Reconnaissance Drone won 3 rd prize in the recent Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Technology Application and Promotion Institute during the National Inventors’ Week.

Allan Timothy C. Figueroa, a second year Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) student, won an essay writing contest sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Rotary Club of Magsaysay. The competition was held last February 3 at the Aloha Hotel.
The contest was conducted to give honor to Blas Ople’s 82nd birth anniversary. Entitled “The Legacy of a Hero”, Figueroa’s essay depicts the life and contributions of the late Senator — from his childhood to his political struggles and untimely death.
Figueroa received a cash prize and plaque of recognition for his award-winning essay. He bested other entries from different universities within the Metro Manila area. Other winners of the competition were students from the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UP-D) and Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP).
“I want to prove that Mapúans aren't just technically competent. They can excel in other areas as well,” Figueroa told The New Builder when asked of his reasons in joining the event.

Luis Angelo Sevilla, a sophomore Mechanical Engineering (ME) student, flagged the banner of the Philippines and Mapúa in the 2009 American Society for Heating Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Conference after being chosen as the first representative of the country. The affair, with the theme of resource conservation and honor of the environment, was held last January 24-28 at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois.
According to ME Dean Manuel Belino, Chairman of ASHRAE Student Activities, Sevilla’s presence in the convention was historic. He became the first representative of a Philippine institution to attend the prestigious international conference. “It’s not La Salle, it’s not UP, but for the first time, it’s Mapúa. It’s historical indeed,” expressed Sevilla.
ASHRAE is an international organization managed by people from different parts of the globe. Among the other invitees were foreign engineers and delegates from student chapters in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Local contingents from the Philippine Society of Ventilating Air-Conditioning Refrigerating Engineers (PSVARE) were also present in the gathering.
