Child Cruelty in Pinoy Telenovelas





First of all, I would like to ask you if you have seen something like this on TV.

A child is put inside a dog cage.
A group of children is stacked inside a crate which is then buried on the ground.
A baby is place inside a garbage container.
A child is tied by his wrist and is being lead around the house like a dog on a collar.
Fluids are force feed on the mouth of the child.
Countless degrading remarks hurled at the child.

If you have have seen most of this, then you really must be an avid fan of watching Pinoy telenovelas. Indeed this is sort of normal when a child is one of the main lead in a Pinoy soap opera. And in a soap opera that usually is centered on mistreatment of the protagonist in its plot, then a child will be no exception to this horrific depictions.

Of course they could always say that it is all just acting and that it is not real, to which they may have a point. However in my own opinion even if it is just acting, it still conveys a negative message to the people who viewed this shows. To some irresponsible adults or parents, it might be seen that it is alright for them to treat children this way, since that is the way they do it on TV. To the children who viewed the show, it might give the meaning that adults have the rights to inflict cruelty on them. Most kids believe that whatever is shown on TV is real and justified anyway.

I am an avid watcher of telenovelas myself, and I have seen a lot of drama series as well. From the Latin American wave(Marimar, La Traidora, Chabelita) which is popular in the 90’s to the Korean wave which is popular nowadays. The thing is upon watching this foreign soaps, the common denominator with them is that they try to avoid showing extreme cruelty towards the character that the child actor/actress is playing. If there is a violent scene then they try to convey it in a more subtle mode. Not in the horrific mode in which most Pinoy telenovelas do.

In the Philippine telenovelas the directors, writers and producers could not care less how they will show it. In one show in particular “Biritera”, I was getting the notion that makers of that telenovela is actually getting their kicks by routinely beating the crap out of the character of Roseann Magan.

It seems like every week there is another method of inflicting pain towards the main character of the said telenovela. It is not enough that they always seem to devise a new method of physically torturing the character as the story progresses, tons of verbal abuse is also hurled at the character as well. And it is not only in Biritera that this kind of depictions happen, others soap operas that have children as the main character also gets the same treatment.

Is this the Pinoy way of how we try to entertain the viewers? By showing them cruelty to children. Can they not try to depict oppression without going to this kind of debauchery. Or maybe this is what the people wanted to see. I sincerely hope not.

I hope that the makers of this kind of telenovelas realize that they have an obligation to the viewers and to the children. By continuing to focus on making telenovelas that shows graphic violence to the characters portrayed by children, then it is almost like they are contributing in the idea that it is alright to abuse them.

Since the MTRCB seems to be powerless to do anything about it, then my message to the people who makes this telenovelas - PLEASE, SPARE THE CHILDREN. If they insist to still make this kinds of atrocities, then I urge the viewing public to avoid watching this kind of shows.

By ignoring this telenovelas we can show them that what they are doing to the characters portrayed by children is appalling to watch. And maybe they will finally get the idea that they should be more responsible when they are handling children’s character in their soap dramas.

Mas madalas din akong makapanood ng mga telenovela nila kaya masyadong concern ako kung bakit grabe naman ang ginagawa nila sa mga character na mga bata.

Kahit sabihin nilang arte lang iyon, ang pangit pa rin tingnan kasi. Parang sadista na ang dating ng mga gumagawa ng mga telenovela na ito.

Ayon kay Sweet, “Yes, the rumors are true.

"But in all fairness to GMA, kinausap naman ang mga managers namin at kami nang maayos.

"Sabi ko nga, some good things never last and for whatever reason... the management decided to change Showbiz Central/

May ideya na raw si Sweet kung ano ang ipapalit, pero baka makagalitan daw siya kaya hindi pa niya masasabi.

Manila, Philippines - Beginning tomorrow, July 16, GMA 7 airs the newest season of Dragon Ball Z Kai, one of the favorite animé characters of kids and animé lovers. It will air Mondays to Fridays after One Piece.

In the story, planet Earth will once again be in danger as evil forces try to get in. Only Goku has the ability and the power to save Earth from these evil forces.

However, a year has passed and he still has not returned to Earth. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Frieza managed to survive from the battle against Goku and he has been rebuilt into a cyborg by his father, King Cold. They are heading towards Earth to destroy it as their revenge on Goku. The rest of the Z Fighters gather to defend the Earth from Frieza despite knowing the odds are against them.

But as soon as Frieza, King Cold and the rest of the army arrive on Earth, they are met by a mysterious teenager wielding a sword who claims that he is there to kill them.

Who is this mysterious teenager who challenges Frieza and King Cold? Will he and the rest of the Z Fighters save Earth from the evil forces?

  GMA sees late switch to digital TV

  GMA Network Inc. official recently said that it would be the last network to adopt to digital television because of the economic situation of the Filipino TV viewers.
  
  “GMA may be late in adopting full digitization due to the economic situation of the Filipino TV viewers. Going digital requires an investment of some sorts,” said Felipe Gozon, chief executive officer of GMA Network.
  
  

  
  The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will endorse to Malacañang the adoption of the Japanese standard for the Philippines’ migration to digital terrestrial TV.
  
  Digital television is an innovative transmitting technology that has transformed television-viewing experience. It has enabled broadcasters to offer television with better picture and sound quality. It also offers multiple programming choices.
  
  In April 2011, the NTC ordered all broadcasting companies in the Philippines to shut off their analog signal by December 2015 and switch to digital broadcast.
  
  On March 27, 2011, the local regulator ordered an evaluation of the standard to be used by the Philippines for digital television and is reconsidering the second generation Digital Video Broadcasting from Europe.
  
  The Philippines will be using the Japanese Terrestrial Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting ) to facilitate the country’s transition to digital television, rather than the Advanced Television System Committee system implemented by North American broadcasters devised as a replacement for the National Television System Committee system utilized by North America and the Philippines.
  
  Gozon said that GMA Network is more inclined to use the European model because the company thinks it is better than the Japanese counterpart. But choosing between two standards still requires thorough study and discussions.
  
  In case the government pushes though with the Japanese standard, the government cannot mandate broadcasters to adopt the chosen standard because broadcasters will invest their own money to buy the equipment. Also, the broadcasters will not borrow money from the government.
  
  Gozon also said that except for the transmitter, all of GMA’s equipment are 90 percent digital. The pending investment is the digital transmitter, which is much cheaper to operate than its analog counterpart.
  
  The Philippines will be the first in Asia to adopt the Japanese standard for digital TV.
